Sony Wants To Grow PlayStation By Making Xbox Smaller, Phil Spencer Says

Most of the sony fans in this thread didn't bother to read the full quote. I dont know how anyone could deny the deals that prevented games from being on xbox an entire generation along with timed exclusive deals that also limit the appeal of xbox.

I still cant get street fighter 5 on xbox among other titles.

This Activision deal has really got the gloves off Sony and MS. There's a lot of bitterness between them.

Sony took the mature market off sega and Nintendo. Then MS entered and all their gains were PlayStation loses. Then Sony rebounded at MS expense. They're too similar not to be directly competing so of course Sony growing means smaller Xbox and Xbox growing means smaller PlayStation.

It's about fucking time.
Microsoft has been trying to play nice guys with Sony while Sony hates Xbox and would want nothing better than for it to die.
I'm not knocking Sony for their stance. Playstation is Sony. It's all they have. They were late to the PC party, have no mobile presence. It's console or bust for Sony.
They are protecting that at all costs.
Microsoft on the other hand was talking shit like a rising tide lifts all boats, thinking Sony thought like them.
Microsoft are so worried about negative press. They dared making Tomb Raider a timed exclusive and the pro Sony media shit on them.
They were so timid they never went after a third party AAA game ever again. Meanwhile Sony was out their trying to get everything they could afford.
Microsoft sets up gamepass as a unique selling point.
Rather than Sony matching it they just change their contracts to say that publishers can put their games on GP unless they put it on PS+ as well.
Fucking Microsoft had to give Sony Deathloop on PS+ and will have to give them Ghostwire as well just to put it on Gamepass.
They then go to the FTC and CMA and bitch about Gamepass and how it will help Microsoft dominate the industry and they can't be allowed to put COD on it.
So Phil is 100% correct. Rather than Sony competing and putting their first party games on PS+ they strive to try and kill gamepass.
The good thing about all of this is that MS has finally woken the fuck up and worked out that Sony fucking hates them and is trying to screw them over at every pass.
And good on Sony for doing that, buisnes is buisness.
Now Microsoft says FU to Sony.
They could easily pull the rug out from under Sony's feet.
Take Minecraft off Playstation.
Minecraft and Fortnite are the pied piper of gaming.
The new generation of gamers (young kids getting their first gaming console) get one to play Minecraft and Fortnite (excusing Nintendo here).
Not having Minecraft on Playstation will absolutely hurt Sony in console sales. This would fuck them over and Sony deserve it.
Gloves off MS.
This shit is streetbeefs now.

Hmm delicious fresh pasta

Xbox could have purchased those same timed exclusives. Microsoft just know that you and so many other “Xbox or die” fans are more interested in promises than anything else.

Or.. people did read the statements and still can't figure out why XB has not taken the opportunity to grow their current studios instead of whining about Sony? Frankly, I'm disappointed and wish XB fans would start holding them more accountable for their lack of output instead of blaming everyone else. It's not like they do not have the infamous warchest to make their own exclusive deals.

So same practices Microsoft paid off all day long in the 360 era?

About the whole timed exclusive deals last gen and MS being "afraid" of going after big AAA games because of negative press and only going after a lot of indies. Isn't just possible that Sony was just offering them more money than MS (because I think it is safe to assume a few years ago MS wasn't investing as much on the Xbox brand as they're doing now) and probably publishers just saw as a better deal to go with the company that had a bigger userbase.

What? Deals for both games (and Deathloop didn't release on PS+, it was released on PS+ Extra though almost a year later) were sorted out waaaaay before MS bought Bethesda. There's a thing called a "contract". Breaking a contract could cost a fuckton of buckaroos, which is why most companies/people avoid doing so. But there was never any "giving" involved. Just pure business (and also money already spent by both Sony and Bethesda).
It was never slated to be released on PS+. If you read Sony's contracts you would have seen the clause where its says the game cannot be put on a competition subscription service unless it is also put on PS+. If MS didn't want to put it on GP then it wouldn't have been on PS+. That's why it was a year late and dropped the same time as it did on Gamepass.

Maybe because that's not enough to secure a profitable position at long term and both Sony and Microsoft know about it better than any of us? I mean, Sony has a wide output of first party quality games as a result of the growth of their studios, yet they are terrified of the possible loss and inclusion of CoD on Game Pass, reaching the point of minimizing the importance of their sagas and the ability of their top-tier studios to develop an alternative, trying to block the purchase of ABK in every possible way while the rest of the world doesn't give a damn.

Apparently in SonyGAF it's okay for Sony to use all the resources at its disposal to perpetuate its competitive advantage which effectively hurt Microsoft's game division (and any lesser competitor), including contracts for exclusive content in key titles for ages (ahem! CoD) or blocking iconic sagas on Xbox like Street Fighter or Final Fantasy, but it's wrong for Microsoft to do the same with their resources and their current competitive disadvantage.

Because of course, we know that if Sony had Microsoft's money, it would be a little sister of charity, with no anti-consumer or monopolistic practices, no.

Xbox did the same things during that time. Try again.

Even if your stance held any weight, that's not even close to buying huge publishers.

There is a group of people who think that Microsoft should have to have the same budget for buying studios that Sony has. Because Sony can't afford to by Activision then by default Microsoft shouldn't be able to. The other glorious take is that sure Sony bought a publisher in Psygonois, but that was decades ago. They haven't done that recently, and so Microsoft shouldn't be able to do it now either.
It's the fucking hypocrisy that gets me.
Sony could have bought Zenimax. Sony however has been using PlayStation profits to prop up their other less than profitable buisness units. They could have taken a couple of years profit and bought Zenimax. They chose not to.
And to the people saying "SoNy DoNt bUy PuBlishErs", you all forget that Sony was one of the companies vying to buy Warner Bros when they were looking to sell.
The same flogs are saying how Sony should buy Square.
Get the fuck out of here with that shit.

Sony's short sighted decisions previously is what is holding them back.
They didn't bring their games to PC, however now that Sony is waking up thinking, shit, we better start to expand our reach and sell our games on PC. That decision means that they have had to use some of that acquisition money to buy PC conversion studios as their first party studios don't have that skillset.

Sony isn't a sacred cow. Microsoft owes them nothing. Nada. Zip.
They don't owe Playstation players nothing either.
Those Playstation owners were all touching themselves in their dirty places when Sony would secure a third party exclusive and taking that away from Xbox users.
Couldnt play SF5 on Xbox? Stiff shit. Get a Playstation.
Couldn't play FF on Xbox? Get a Playstation.
Spiderman disappeared from Xbox? Get a Playstation.

When the news of Sony trying to get Starfield as exclusive was told, out came the butt plugs.
Then when MS makes it exclusive to Xbox all the port begging and hot take tweets were fired off to Uncle Phil saying how he's a cunt for taking that away from Playstation.

I don't get upset if Sony buys Insomniac and takes away Sunset from Xbox.
I don't get upset if Sony make Wolverine an exclusive game to PS. I don't care if Sony buys Square and makes their games exclusive.
I want there to be more exclusive content on Xbox and PS. I want each company to have even more first party studios.
I don't hate Sony. I will buy a PS5. I can afford to buy anything I want.
I respect the buisness moves Sony made to take content away from Xbox. They only have look after their own customers. They owe MS and Xbox players nothing.
It's the fucking hypocrisy from them and their fanboys that piss me off.
The fucking swing from console victors to victims was fast, real fast.
Sony begging for MS to not be allowed to buy Activision and them being bad for not making Starfield for PS is both the funniest and most aggravating thing around.

Now sure, I might be going full retard. I might be annoyed that my promised BJ didn't happen last night, but facts are facts.

That's not even close because Sony doesn't have the financial muscle to play in the same field, not because they didn't want to.

That has nothing to do with anything we were discussing.

Can't complain about a few games taking a year to come to Xbox or games that would never have been made without funding (SFV), then pretend making a whole publisher permanently exclusive is the same.

This out of context.

The quote is effectively that Sony only cares about the console space and since consoles are basically capped at 200M devices that Sony can only grow by reducing their competition versus expanding into new markets like mobile, cloud, subscription, other devices.

Which isn't untrue - but this whole thing has been a shit show for both these companies and it's been embarrassing all around.
Only intelligent post in this thread. Of course it will be ignored.

Of course it does.

If it weren't Microsoft buying ABK (which at least has some willingness to make and honor deals to expand its business, as has been shown), it would be Tencent, Embracer, Amazon, Meta, Google, Apple or [insert tech giant here] and the crying would be even stronger.

They're large companies destined to generate the greatest benefits, don't fall into the delusion that one is better than another just because the scale and complexity of their operations isn't the same.

I thought it was the opposite and that was MS who was spending almost $100B on acquiring multiplatform publishers and devs to remove them from PlayStation and grow their own platform?

I understand that MS wants to do this, but I also understand that Sony would prefer to see the ABK acquisition blocked. But that wouldn't make Xbox smaller, they'd continue as they are.

That is, at a clear disadvantage compared to a much larger park of competing consoles.

The only way for Xbox to function as a division or go to hell (due to pressure from shareholders) depends on this type of decision and not on romanticizing the "organic growth" that's read on the forums, the only one that can afford that privilege is Nintendo.

No it isn't.

As far as someone else doing it if Microsoft didn't? Would be just as shitty.

And yet that’s how business work.

But the focus always seems to be on when a big boy does it, while we turn a blind eye when the charismatic boy has been doing the same thing all his life (based on his possibilities).

The problem with these posts is that they forget it's not sony taking Ms to court.

I thought it was the opposite and that was MS who was spending almost $100B on acquiring multiplatform publishers and devs to remove them from PlayStation and grow their own platform
Except that MS has stated a bajillion times now that they have no intention of removing them from Playstation.
I understand that MS wants to do this, but I also understand that Sony would prefer to see the ABK acquisition blocked. But that wouldn't make Xbox smaller, they'd continue as they are.
What he's referring to is Sony's continued practice of taking traditionally 3rd party developers, and paying them to make games exclusively for 1 console.

In reality though, to some extent anyways. Both companies are essentially doing the same thing. They're just going about it different ways. MS is buying up publishers to ensure their content is on their platform. Sony is signing exclusivity deals to ensure that their content is on theirs.

The point remains that Sony pays money to make Gamepass less appealing.

Not saying who is right in all of this, but that point doesn’t get addressed much.
The fact that you think Sony is spending money to take content away from xbox, insinuates that you think what each company do is equal. Thats the reason why the FTC is trying to block this deal in the first place.
:messenger_tears_of_joy:
Its not equal, its anti competitive and to compare the two, is being intellectually dishonest. They may spend money to provide exclusive content, but how they do it is fundamentally different. Its general blanket statements without context that makes this discussion redundant if we ignore the intricacies.

Sony paying to fund a game like Kena Bridge of Spirits is not the same as Microsoft buying exclusivity to Tomb Raider for a year to compete with Uncharted. Sony partnering with Marvel and buying Insomiac after hiring them to develop Spiderman for ps4, is not the same as Microsoft buying an Indie dev like Ninja theory, and taking HellBlade 2 and future IPs away from playstation. Keep in mind, its been reported Microsoft actually turned down Marvel before they approached Sony. Thats just one example to show how Microsoft took access away from Spiderman through their own decisions. Probably knew they couldnt live up to expectations and didnt want a huge stinker on their resume.

This whole "Sony outbidding Microsoft", or "paying to keep games off gamepass" is just an excuse to absolve Microsoft from the blame of not taking more risk, and only going after established franchises.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

Not having Minecraft on Playstation will absolutely hurt Sony in console sales. This would fuck them over and Sony deserve it.
Gloves off MS.

Gloves off MS.
This shit is streetbeefs now.

Xbox could have purchased those same timed exclusives. Microsoft just know that you and so many other “Xbox or die” fans are more interested in promises than anything else.
Not even promises, they just want "free" stuff. Why would they secure a timed exclusive if they've already conditioned their users to expect the games for free in the service?

Microsoft grabbed one of the biggest multiplayer games in PUBG for a 1-year time exclusive deal, which is bigger than any time exclusive deal Sony has made during the PS4 era. Microsoft has acquired Zenimax and didn't play nice by making Elder Scrolls and Starfield exclusive.

Now they're trying to acquire the biggest publisher out there by taking Call of Duty off PlayStation.

You guys are being delusional by thinking Microsoft has been playing nice.
