Why does nobody make SP DLC anymore?

TLOU got a remake and now it looks like HZD might get one and I wonder what the point is. Both of these games had good quality SP DLC and so did RDR and GTA IV.

Nowadays we have no DLC for games like RDR2, HFW and TLOU2 even though all these games would benefit greatly from it. GTA V should have had it as well.

Are devs that lazy that instead of adding on to their games in interesting and creative ways they just rehash what is already there with new bells and whistles?

In Rockstar's case, sadly, sales of The Lost & Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Undead Nightmare and the L.A. Noire DLC cases were completely dwarfed by micro transaction sales and it even got to the point where they cancelled the single player DLC for GTAV as they were making more money than ever just doing packs for GTAO.

And we are getting another one with Xenoblade 3.

I think it was the right decision by publishers. If you look at stuff like number of steam reviews, players or completion rates, it makes more sense to release a new game vs a big single player DLC. Gamers just don't play single player expansions, hell they barely complete single player games.

Witcher 3 DLC was stellar but they could have released a shorter Witcher 4 around 2018 had they focused in an entire new game and earn more money since the Witcher IP was hot around that time.

That is something I miss from previous generations. Shorter lead times where studios iterate and improve a game technology gradually with each release. Look at mass effect or the GTA sixth gen trilogy.
Nowadays studios have to reinvent the wheel with each new release.

And besides, something that annoys me a bit about goty editions of games is that they throw the DLC at you in no particular order. A recent example was mass effect legendary edition which I played recently. I was doing main missions and all of a sudden I started doing some DLC missions without realizing. It got me out of the game flow a bit. Also some games include overpowered weapons as DLC that break the base game.

Hfw getting dlc. Tlou2 considering so much controversy with crunch and divisive story, I'd imagine everyone just wanting to move on from it.

Concern trolling fangirls told us it was Miles Morales.

Even though we have actual examples in Ghost of Tsushima, Doom Eternal, HZD: Frozen Wilds, The Witcher 3, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Ace Combat 7, as well as most big Japanese games for that matter, etc., etc...

I'm with you OP. It was always great to get new content for a game that you enjoy. You don't see it nearly as much now as you used to.

Everyone is too focused on selling you a new hat for your character instead. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The only time the single player DLC bothered me was when it was available day and date with the original release, or even after release if there was no download and the bastards just sold you content they had already put on the disk.

Neil Druckmann said he regrets making Left Behind a DLC and was glad it became standalone.
Part II doesn’t need DLC it’s a full & complete 25+ hour game.
RDR2 and GTA5 didn’t get story DLC because GTA Online makes so much money.

Cory Barlog has said he doesn’t like DLC.
Ghost of Tsushima got DLC and people complained about having to pay $20 for it.
Death Stranding got DLC.
Returnal got free DLC.

And Horizon Forbidden West is getting DLC.

Last time i played GTA V, most of the map was unused. Stuff like a big stadium, a prison etc, were just backdrops. The stadium in particular was creepy in how abandoned it was.

Are these places used in the multiplayer or something? I always thought there would be updates/patches/expansions that would use more of the map. Which is a shame because GTA's map is still the best in the open world space.

Some still do of course, i enjoyed the Dlc for the Outer Worlds, but the answer is easy, they don't have to make them now to make more money with stores and microtansaction's etc, that's why GTA V never got a Sp dlc, i'm all for dlc, but we need some good new big games first.

Because it’s usually tacked on junk with few exceptions. Move on and make something else. I don’t want to revisit a game I’ve long since finished for 2-4 hours.

Who is nobody?
Cuz alot of game get singleplayer DLC.

Just cuz you play 3 titles and those 3 titles dont get SP DLC doesnt mean no one makes SP DLC.

Tons of games release single player DLC OP, sounds like you've got an extremely narrow selection of games you play.
Exactly.
These threads usually come off as really self centred.....why dont these specific companies make DLC for these specific games that I play...is what OP meant to say.
Instead because they believe the games they play are what everyone plays, suddenly NOBODY makes SP DLC.

Stadium = Arena War GTAO update (Destruction Derby, Monster Trucks, etc)
Prison = Heists GTAO update (used for a prison break, and later a raid to kill someone)

I guess Fortnite showed that it's easier to make money by adding goku and Naruto to your uninspired battle royal than trying to make quality content.

I play nothing but single player games and there is DLC all the time.

It’s just the games you mentioned.

I assume these don't work in single player, right? Been a couple of years since i played.

Yeah, I don’t know about that. Maybe it’s because your a trendy and only play what’s hot and big and the developers move on to start their next rema… I mean project.

loads of games get SP DLC. Pathfinder has had 2 additional campaigns as DLC and Xenoblade is getting multiple DLCs. Others here have listed examples too.
