Coming to terms with the state of the industry…

Some of you guys need to realize there is more to gaming than AAA blockbuster.
Why? Most people enjoy AAA games and I don’t see why that has to change.

I didn’t buy a fucking Series X, PS5 and LG OLED TV to play indie games like Tunic.

Everyone has a right to be upset about what’s happening with gaming. These next gen consoles should have just been delayed

We should never settle for less. Not when we are spending $70 a game or $180 for an yearly service. Not when we just bought $500 premium priced consoles. We should never give up and let these corpos get away with underdelivering and misleading us. There is a great movie quote I love that perfectly describes these suits running the video game industry right now:

"They bank on your apathy. They bank on your willful ignorance. They plan strategies around it. They try to figure out how much they can get away with because of it [apathy]."

Some of us have to speak up or in 5 years everyone will be making fortnite clones.

Alternate take: The creation of the phrase 'AAA games' have ruined today's 20-40 year old gamers into thinking they need big blockbuster movie-style games to enjoy gaming anymore, when their younger selves would have just been amazed at the gigantic selection of all of these video games, regardless of studio size.

Edit: Most of those really fun arcade-like Sega Dreamcast titles like Jet Set Radio 1, Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5, Sega Bass Fishing, Samba De Amigo, House of the Dead 2, Power Stone, Bangai-O, etc would have been called indie trash by today's standards of this forum, and that's sad.

Or you could enjoy AAA, AA and indie games, if only thing you play is AAA blockbusters not only you gonna get bored but also miss out some gems just because it doesn’t have expensive graphics.

I was overwhelmingly negative today. And for that I do appologize. After thinking on it, i realize that the days of non stop mega tons, or the year of dreams, are gone. Triple A games are simply to expensive, and take too much time to develop now.

Its interesting to go back and watch sonys e3 2015-2017 press conferences. Each show has a mix of their own first party triple a games, and a helping of indies to compliment those games. However, thanks to the rising costs, and scope of big game production, a game announced at the start of a conosles life, may not release until close to the end of it.

I would not be surprised if for example, by the time perfect dark comes out, we are already hearing rumblings of a new xbox, and i fully expect gta 6 to be a cross generational game between the ps5 And ps6.

Its not just sony and microsoft who are going through this, ea has nothing but sports titles and need for speed releasing this year, ubisoft isnt even doing their typical show case, presumably because not much is ready for this year from them outside of updates to their existing titles. Nintendo announced metroid prime 4 and bayo 3 in 2017, and they still are not out.

Indies, and aa live service titles have become crutches for these companies to lean on during years where most of their own content isnt ready to be shown.

I realized that i need to change my expectations for game releases and show cases. I need to adapt, just as this industry has had to.
People were saying that the AAA will decline with where the industry is headed but most were labeled as haters and doomers. Now you will slowly see as GaaS takes over.

The problem is that publishers only want to make three types of games: massive AAA games that take 4+ years to make, free-to-play games full of microtransactions, or forgettable remasters of old games. They need to start creating studios to make smaller games. Blizzard could have created a small studio to make a 2D Metroidvania-style game with the Diablo IP to hold us over until Diablo IV. A game like that could have been made in under 3 years and would have been far more well-received than Diablo Immortal. There was a time when publishers did this, Capcom for example made smaller games like Mega man 9/10, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Strider, etc. but now it's AAA, free to play or nothing.

How long was pretty much the whole of the industry working from home for during 2020/21?

This has obviously had a massive impact across the board and certainly added time to almost every project.

Things will get back on track eventually.
I think most big companies have been going back to office since mid 2021 (I work for a large corporation and we have been back since then) so the Covid delay is kind of a crutch now for companies not performing.

Most Japanese publishers do this. SQEX especially.

Not really, seeing as you cannot just wipe away the time lost.

Absolutely. I love games like Oxenfree, Dead Cells, Life is Strange Before the Storm, Tales from Borderlands, Streets of Rage 4 etc. The AAA is what I buy the new consoles for tho.

Games outside the AAA blockbuster are, for me anyway, a starter or a desert to the main course.

It’s your definition of AAA game that’s the real issue. Metroid Dread completely destroys anything anyone has put out lately for me. And the biggest issue I have with both Sony and MS is they don’t have anything close to that. They regurgitate the same thing year after year.

Then you need accept the fact AAA games are expensive to make and takes a long time to come out…..that’s just how it is.

Innovation dies when perceived value is in getting a conveyor belt of guaranteed money makers out the door.

You’d have much less innovation if you tried to speed that process up. Covid is a legitimate excuse or at least it was at the start of it now remote working and development is a legitimate way of producing better results but it’s not perfect.

The industry will skew towards F2P models and iterating on their previous releases so you’ll see very little “new” from the big studios. They will simple look to squeeze the value out of their current services and platforms.

Hoping PSVR 2 breaks the mould.

Mid-budget games started dying off after the end of the PS2 era when the costs of making games ballooned due to the higher resolutions and asset requirements of the HD era. The current state of the industry where it's AAA or F2P is a direct consequence of the fact that mid-budget games simply were not able to keep up with visual quality demands while still being able to turn a profit.

That said, there is also currently a budget arms race going on even at the F2P/mobile level. Genshin Impact reportedly cost over $150 million to make. Diablo Immortal is currently being very well-received by it's target audience and will likely turn a profit for NetEase and Blizzard within the first month of operation, incidentally.

It seems for the first time ever at this point in time, there is no AAA game locked for november. God of war ragnarok, Avatar and Hogwarts Legacy are pretty much moving targets now. Wild.

Good think AA /indies got me covered and I learned that long ago when summer was a wasteland of releases.

Yep a lot of games were delayed because of Covid, they also take longer to make and are more expensive, thats the price of prettier graphics each generation.

But its not too bad, if you own multiple consoles there is always something exciting around the corner

I loved metroid dread. I beat it with 100 percent item completion, but it definitely lacked the oomf of a 3d mario, a zelda game, a metroid prime, or bayonetta 3

I'm kinda with you, but I think it comes down to what gaming era you come from maybe?
Im a traditional shooter, driver, RPG and action game guy. To me the Zanny and out there shit was left to platformers like Crash, Rayman or Bubsy
They were the majority of games that came out on consoles. The majority of games were made by dudes, and fell to dude types of genres. The other shit was for kids.
Nowadays that's not the case.
It seems like every second protagonist is some uni students zanny character they had in their sketch book. The companies hire these people and then are prisoner to their tastes and directions.
Like how we went from having a serious FPS like Battlefield to what we have now is a joke.
Like who the fuck came up with a one legged female protagonist as the ball busting action hero in BF5? How did that shit get through?
I can't play an action game with that type of shit in it.
On top of that you have both Sony and Microsoft pushing the indie wagon, and I get that you want to promote the up and coming game designers, but when they are the majority of a game release schedule and game show then it's overkill.

Maybe there are some realities that people like me need to just accept, and that's that the old core gamer is no longer the people the sales pitch is for. They already have us. It's every other person with whatever taste traditional gamers don't have that is the prize now. They are the new customers.
So, I will play the 5% of games that are my taste and shake my head at the direction of the industry.

Well people want to nitpick and count how many hair follicles Kratos has on his balls with screenshots. Or people cry when games are only 8-10 hrs. Don’t forget the fans demand massive open worlds. ( with tons of different biomes).
Side quests that aren’t repetitive, proper facial animations with hundreds of different npcs. Great voice actors etc.

And if you don’t offer all that? Fanboys tearing it apart online. Memes, trash talk etc.

Now everyone sits and wonders why we wait 5-6 years for new games. When they do come they’re loaded with the intent and content to keep you stuck on it for years

Bang on. Gamers think a Red Dead Redemption 2 can be made by just anybody. When an Assassins Creed comes out who dares to be a bit repetitive, trash it like theres no tomorrow.
Now you got slim pickings these past 2 years. Karma.

There’s very few studios that can pump out a AAA game in 2-3 years. Even then they’re much less ambitious than Red dead.

WARNING: Strong old man yells at cloud energy incoming:

First of all, my cellphone with Retroarch smokes between 85 to 90% of the games shown through the week. And its a weak phone that can run up to Dreamcast. Nothing fancy.

I logged on Steam to wishlist the games I was interested on. There were a few nice games which I wishlisted. But most of them were trash. Indie devs are massively overrated. But its an unwritten rule: you just cant look down on them or you will be "a casual that only plays AAA games" Folks are right to be pissed. A lot of games I saw on the show today could have been released as XBLA on the 360. Gamers bought 10 to 12 TF consoles with ultra fast SSDs and 8/16 Zen2 CPUs to play souped up XBLA games for most of the year and the odd AAA game in between?

Say what you will but up to the 6th gen, all games released, big budget or not, could not run on the previous gen console. Your licensed 4/10 Ben 10/Barbie horse adventures games took advantage of the techology of the time. Even 7th gen downloadable games did it because they were HD and 16:9 which was one of the innovations of the era. But starting on the 8th gen, we are seeing this bunch of indie games that belong to one or several generations prior. Imagine releasing a game looking like Pac Man on the PS2 era? That dev would have been torn to shreds!

Also genre wise:

Whats with the barrage of top down, card collecting, building, turn based, strategy. crafting and survival games? They are a dime a dozen. I feel like these indie devs should have been gifted a LEGO set and some Pokemon cards to satisfy that urge from their childhood and the indie scene would be a lot better.
I guess we have to keep waiting for the revival of Fixed camera horror, third person shooters without cover systems, tactical espionage action, bigger budget inmersive sims, arcade racers, car combat games, character action games and more.

Something that its also a bit cringeworthy is how these guys wear their influences on their sleeves BIG TIME. Not an ounce of creativity. Like those Goldeneye or Persona ripoffs. Who the heck will play that persona like game now that the true persona games will be on gamepass? I think that a lot of the indie scene would be in trouble if studios from prior generations (specially between the 4th and 6th) started to re release their games on modern platforms. Indie devs took advantage of that void when many AA studios dissapeared and the bar was lowered.

In general I think that the industry, specially the indie one lacks something... some spice some 90s/00s X TREME ATTITUDE hahah. Most of these indie games are soft, light cartoony, with non offensive dull narratives and such. Maybe too much soymilk, vegan food and Frappuchinos fucked up these indie devs minds... dunno. Old devs are fine though. Can't wait to play that Kojima game, Warhammer Space Marine 2 or the system shock remake.

Scope has just been reduced is all. If you get 5 great games and 15 terrible ones a gen, it's about on par with getting 10 great ones and 30 terrible ones in the PS2 days. Devs nowadays also are well aware of this number deficiency, so most games are either 150+ hour campaigns w/side content included with six difficulty modes and NG+ or they cater hardcore to the multiplayer GaaS model as a way to attempt to reconcile the deficit in # of products.

I mean, yeah, it might suck if I were 15 again and had nothing but time and limitless energy, but even accounting for that, they don't make 15 year Olds like they did in my time. If you never had an endless conveyor belt of AAA titles, you probably wouldn't miss it.

We're getting old, comrades.

I wouldn’t say mid-range games ever really died off, most games that come out on PC that aren’t just console ports are mid-range games. My point was mainly about the major publishers, EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, Square-Enix, etc not making these types of games anymore.

I think the issue is with the publishers. I don’t think Bioware would have made Anthem if they were still independent. I think once these developers got bought out or merged with large corporations it changed them. They stop making the games they wanted to make and now make whatever the publisher thinks will bring in the most money. This has led to them making only big-budget games or free-to-play games and they don’t even consider anything else. Stardew valley sold over 20million copies, Terraria sold over 40million copies, Minecraft sold over 230million copies, Fortnite is one of the most popular games right now, there are no “visual quality demands”. If a game is good(or at the very least fun to play) lots of people will buy it. These big publishers could make games like these or anything that doesn't require 4+ years to make but they don’t. EA has 11,000 employees and they have only 2 games listed on their coming soon for 2022 games list(f1 2022 and Madden 23), it’s absurd.

I am not disappointment. I am angry that Sony and Microsoft knew they were releasing consoles in 2020, and yet 2-3 years before covid was ever a thing, they decided to make cross gen games instead. Had they made GT7, Forza Horizon, Horizon FW, GOW, and several other games next gen only and really pushed themselves to take advantage of the hardware, we would not be faced with this depressing reality. At worst, those games would get delayed due to covid, but we would be far more excited just seeing next gen stuff knowing we would be playing them in a 6-12 months instead of next 3 years or so.

Looks like you didnt game much in the 90s. A lot of top quality games on console or PC could get a sequel a year later. Even in the 80s.

I totally understand gaming was a lot less complex the farther back you go, but I'm still amazed how in the 80s or 90s you could get some PC studios churning out RPG after RPG literally with annual sequels (or pretty close to it). Small teams too. I guess the writers and graphics guys were able to rewrite and redraw everything new in just one year. Of course there would be some rehashed artwork and the core game engine is done. But the artists must had been churning out new monsters and shit every day to keep up. Crazy.

Those games were pretty cutting edge back in the day though and had good art styles and unique gameplay.

I think people would have reacted similarly if the indies of that time we're Atari like games that made up over 80% of releases.

True. They would be indie.

It's a love it or hate it thing in modern gaming because a lot of gamers will trend to the AAA types of games, which involve solid productions values, scope or MP communities. Or perhaps all three.

It can be argued this is good for gaming because now we got games you spend $70 on and dont feel pissed you beat them over a weekend like the old days. All of us have bought games for full budget, you beat the game fast and you feel pissed how costly it was. Then you think in your head if I sell it back how much $$$ will I lose? WOuld had been better if I just rented it for 3 days for $10.

It can also be argued it's bad because the benchmarks are set high now, every gamer compares their $70 game to GTA, COD, or whatever open world game that will give them 300 hours of gaming vs. 12 hours of gaming.

What would probably solve a lot of this is if gaming had pricing all over the place, but you typically only get that with indie games set anywhere from $5-30. But for bigger budget games they got that written in stone $60 or $70 price tag on it whether it's GTA or Godfall.

Now if Godfall was $70 and GTA was $170, people's perspectives would change. But even the best most played games still are capped at $70 now.
