PS1 games on the new PS+ to get Trophy support

This is bad news. Anything that adds even the slightest bit of friction to adding games to the library will gravely endanger the program
The most expensive tier is mostly connected to their legacy as well...if they stop bringing new games every month it would backfire on them...
I'm sure at this point they already have quite a few of them ready to release, even more then the ones we will get on day one.

There are two types of gamers. Those of us who like trophies/achievements and those who are triggered others like them.
I mean...reminds me of those people who are mad because a TV show they don't like is renewed...just because trophies are there doesn't mean you have to pursue them. Just ignore them, remove all notifications and that's it. They are 100% harmless.

With any luck this will simply be optional.

That's what I'm hoping for. I like the concept of adding trophies to older games, but I don't want this to become a burden to developers.

Let the developers decide how they want to handle it. I'd rather have the ability to play the game without trophies than to be unable to play it at all.

Oh hell yeah. This is probably the only thing that would get me to sub to the Premium tier.

Can’t wait to nostalgia trophy hunt some of my favorite classics.

Yep. Any post around trophies/achievements and it's an absolute race to be the first person to say that they don't like trophies, they're ruining games, etc.

Disable notifications and pretend they don't exist. They can be turned off. Takes two seconds and you'll never hear about them again (though I'm sure most of the too cool for trophies crowd likes them anyway).

Competition is awesome. Doubt either company would put in work like this if there was no competition

I wonder if sony will add Alundra with trophy support at some point... or even third parties like Tomb Raider 3. Those would all be a fucking nightmare, but I'd love to get them.

To people worried, this doesn't seem mandatory. Sony states the following in the blogpost:

PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe members will have a selection of popular classic games to play, with some titles that will show improved frame rates and higher-quality resolution compared to their original launch versions. For select original PlayStation and PSP classic games, members will also enjoy a new user interface with menus that allow you to save your game at any time, or even rewind the game if you want a do-over.

I imagine this is also true for the trophy support... and I imagine the games that receive the framerate, resolution and rewind features will be the ones to also get trophy support. It all seems very optional from their wording. We'll see.

achievements are interesting from a statistical point of view. On steam, you can use them to know how much players actually finished a game by looking at the achievements of the first and last levels. I remember that for Wargroove, it was not much, like only 16% of players have finished it.

Retroarch supports it via Retro Achievements, but it's 100% community-driven and not all games are supported. Most translated games, for example, aren't supported even if English releases are. It's also just a fraction of any given library and some systems like PS2 are completely MIA.
PS2 is happening soon-ish actually. Pretty hyped to play some on Steam Deck

I hate to be a negative little bitch but wasn’t this game specifically rated for a release recently? I’m thinking possibly select games will have trophies and most of them won’t personally, However I would love them to retroactively add trophies for all PS1/2/P games just to give a little more life into games I’ve experienced before.

You should know by now that Sony wont get the games on the platform that most people want :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They'll fart out a few and it'll end. This has been the way since the PS3.

Cause they couldn't figure out how to earn money on those classics. Right now they will have steady income from PS+ Premium.
It's also the first time they created separate team dedicated to game preservation.

We will see. I have high hopes, but i've had them for years when it comes to Sony and their back catalogue

And considering what old Jimmy said about 'old games' just makes the whole thing hillarious

But alas, we'll see.

Jim follows the money like any CEO. His persona opinion doesn't matter.
If PlayStation sees this as a good investment they will keep doing it.

Heh, I get where you're coming from, but things seem different this time. They are making a whole top tier service based on old games. It sounds pretty obvious to me the goal will be to add stuff there steadily to guarantee people keep paying for it.

And eventually that will be PS3 games, the same way MS is doing it for the Xbox 360. A few at the time, probably not emulated but converted

Which is why i've dropped off from Playstation somewhat over the years. True it was always about making money, as any company is, but back in the day Sony was more about gaming first it seemed, now it's just run by suits, and it's blatent, as you've just stated.

Retroarch has achievements for classic games. This isn’t a big deal lol
I'm not sure why this post triggered so many people. It is 100% spot on.

Both of these things can be true:
(1) Trophies coming to PS1 games on the PlayStation service is a good thing (a GREAT thing, even).
(2) But also, it's unimpressive, given that the feature has been around for a while on RetroArch, and the official version is a feature only available to the highest (read: most expensive) tier of a paid sub.

No one gives a shit about Retroarch achievements

Yea I don’t get it either lol. Pretty defensive in all honesty.

I really hope so, Sony could do so much in this regard if you're into retro gaming. The PS1 had so many classic titles! Not to mention the PS2! But no doubt most of these are held by 'licence issues' or some guff

So I do have a feeling this'll be a damp squib.

Lets be honest, most people would sell their first born for Rule of Rose or Haunting Ground to be available on the PS5, neeeeever gonna happen. So what we're left with is a few titles at best.
