makes sense.

Sony is basically forced to buy. That Activision/Blizzard purchase brings alot of uncertainty. Also forces Sony to take Playstation more seriously than they have been.

I assume EA or Capcom.

Sony and Nintendo will finally merge to bring out the Nintendo Playstation console next gen.

Why are people always asking for someone to buy them? Serious question. Seems to me if they are that loved, it might make sense to not shake things up.

I think most GAF doesn't want these acquisitions to happen. It's more about having the games you like inside your ecosystem right now.

I always played on Sony consoles and i "want" them to buy Square-Enix not because of console warring, but because i don't want to lose access to those games.

I do think it would be hilarious if Capcom somehow gets acquired by Sony and then Nintendo would lose IPs like Monster Hunter, specially after months of so many people saying "Nintendo is unbothered by all of it" and how this acquisition period doesn't affect them (which it will, even if they don't need 3rd party studios to survive)

Take 2 is the one that can send shock waves. Not valve.

Valve hasn't made a game for a long time. Their last game is VR game.

I didn't use market cap, I used net worth. I used net worth because Valve isn't publicly traded so net worth was what I could get and i compared to another net worth.
Figured out what you are using and still not sure it's useful for the conversation. I am interested to find out where the 12bn net worth came from.

But you still could play the base game, I don't understand how this is such a hard to grasp concept.
Who will want to play the base game without dlc?

Can you play the witcher 3, without the dlc?

Gamers want full experience.

This.

Thanks to Microsoft.

This is the first time ever I actually afraid and excited about acquisitions, sad really.

Well, making sure you will be able to play the games is understandable.

Capcom in the hands of Nintendo is 1000X better than them in the hands of Apple, Google, Netflix, or Tencent's, you would be a fool if you don't think that those giant predators don't have their eyes on Capcom

I know very few people seem to be a fan of all these studio accumulations we are seeing as a whole.

Sure, there are tons of Xbox fans celebrating Bethesda and Activision games becoming exclusive, but I doubt many of those people also celebrated PlayStation getting Insomniac and Bungie - and vice-versa.

But, as someone who wants all the consoles regardless, I prefer they have as different of libraries as possible.

Before the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation, all consoles felt as different as PS5 (or Xbox Series) compared to Nintendo Switch. Everything felt special in its own way.

But, since the PS360, it's felt like two manufacturers making almost the same product. The few games that were exclusive each year tended to be the best games. And I dont believe that's accidental. There was extra pressure for those games to succeed and it helped to be able to maximize the hardware for one particular platform.

I personally would be happy to see the big three all continue to exist with almost fully mutually exclusive libraries. The winner would be determined by the quality of those software.

What I DON'T want to see is another couple players get in on this. Three major players is a good number. If Apple, Google, etc show up with their platforms and start buying up publishers like EA and Ubisoft, etc, then the available games will begin to be spread too thin and the amount of hardware consumers would be required to purchase to play the major games would become overwhelming.

Damn, Microsoft to buy Pepsico to bring Doritos and Mountain Dew to gamepass!.

Why would anyone want Nintendo to buy studios.
"Please beloved third party studio, get sold and start releasing your games exclusively on dated hardware at $60 forever with no sales or discounts!!!"
That sounds like something a lot of developers would love. Nintendo prints money without having to spend it.

The PC gaming community is not the same as the console one. The uproar would be crazy on the Master Race side. I think I can say with the upmost confidence that the PC side wouldn't settle for that tomfoolery. But we'll see.
You'd be surprised, the PC gaming community accepted microtransactions pretty easily after the initial uproar. In fact, they fully embraced it.

Microsoft is more likely to acquire Valve. Would make sense to control Steam. Microsoft Store is not good. Getting Valve would be a huge game changer for Microsoft. It doesn't do much for Sony.

No one is interested in buying Square. Look at their sales. You have nothing to worry about.

Imagine doubling down on a silly take.

Just because you think there's worse, it doesn't mean a console manufacturer should buy a third-party developer whose most successful games are on other platforms.

Not that it matters. No one can buy what is not for sale.

I mean...until last year Sony was basically buying studios that were basically 1st party studios for them or support studios.
Bungie is the beginning of something else.

Jim's speech yesterday was also quite something. He was never this convicted on acquisitions. He went from "organic growth" to "never say never" to "we will absolutely buy more studios. this is far from over" in less than 2 years.

edit: i also believe we might get a huge surprise this year, like Ubisoft acquired by Google or Amazon or something like that. Like a huge get from one of these companies that are trying to take videogames seriously. We are focusing too much on MS and Sony, but this isn't just about them.

Playstation has been sitting pretty for a long time now, PS1 and PS2 were the perfect game machines, and even if the 360 did great, the PS3 also did great, eventually.

Sony didn't need to change its model, it worked and the PS4 was the clear undisputed king, they only needed to grow. But with Game Pass, Sony realized that Microsoft is about to go big, they are not gonna build something like Game Pass without being willing to spend a lot of money. After hearing rumbling about studios being bought up and with the looming next-gen, Microsoft and Sony have been reading their guns, to be the king you need the exclusives, and with Xbox going PC, Sony also understood that they needed a ubiquitous brand like Xbox that crosses PC and consoles. Sony has been and is still playing a bit of catch-up, even if they are still the biggest right now their model isn't going to work in the future if Xbox continues to be this aggressive. So they are getting aggressive too.

Both Sony and Microsoft are aware that something like the Nintendo model is never gonna work for them, they won't be able to have a billion-dollar business based on console exclusivity, brand power, and lower-powered hardware, they don't have Pokemon and Mario or the family-friendly approach.

Right now it's the law of the jungle, you eat what you kill.

We've seen plenty of mediocre exclusives from everyone, though. Flagship IPs getting good scores because of their budget and focus doesn't really mean that every new IP under a bigger umbrella will be inherently good, or better as a result of an acquisition.

Also wanting people to have to pay 3x as much on hardware for games they might previously have played on 1 system and then drawing an arbitrarily line in the sand for Google, Apple etc. not to cross is just silly.

It's better than what we had before, that's for sure. Games industry has been stagnant and pathetic for too long. I'm hoping Apple and Amazon get in to shake things up even more. And as a bonus I get to laugh at all these hilarious "omg it's bad for the industry, think of teh gamerz!!!1" comments.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Nah it can get crazier than Activision for sure.

Apple buying Sony.

Sony and Disney merging.

Nintendo buying... uh... squids.

Disney is under heavy scrutiny, no one know how the fox merger was approved but was a mistake amd even lawmakers agree with that. Also the new CEO is not ballsy. So any merging related to Disney is off the table imo.

Apple hates buying companies. Their biggest purchase was, Beats decade old under 3B i think? Apple is all about organic growth, hence in past they have passed up opportunities to buy Netflix, Tesla.

Google, Amazon and FB are also under heavy scrutiny from lawmakers, they will avoid any big acquisition at any cost.

So being realistic, yeah i don't think anything will be as crazy as MSFT buying ATVI

I am indifferent for the most part but I am also thankful that its been Sony and MS as the ones doing the buying right now. As Phil stated, these are big and long-term industries (gaming) for Sony, MS, and Nintendo; they aren't going to make moves that will damage the industry. With Facebook, Google, Amazon, all getting into gaming and having the kind of money to absorb more or less all but a few companies on this planet, who could easily jump into gaming and then back out when they don't see a return a few years later, its probably for the best this current MS and Sony trend is happening.

Just wait man, in the next year or two one of these companies (or Tencent, Embracer, etc) is going to make a big acquisition and its going to piss a lot of people off.

imagine not being able to comprehend the situation

MS didn't spend 80 billions for Activision + Bethesda to compete with Sony and Nintendo, they are competing against Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix, Tencent, it's a whole different game now. Everyone is racing to build the Netflix of video game and metaverse platform/service. And they need contents

Twin Peaks Thumbs Up GIF

Twin Peaks game confirmed, oh shit!

JK of course, and besides, Twin Peaks is great, but I don’t have a desire to see it in video game form personally. Besides, Deadly Premonition sorta filled that role already.

I was surprised at the 12 billion number, glad I wasn’t the only one. I mean buying valve gives you some of the greatest IP in gaming : DOTA, Left for Dead, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Portal, Half-life , and then a 30% cut of probably 90% of every PC game sold.
