You do know that in general EA gets two third of their revenue from mtx/DLC?

Also you charging for those upgrades? Same price as a new game. (it's the COD issue)

Don't get me wrong that plan is great for consumers but would absolutely make no business sense.

I get your point but even without microtransactions the game is highly profitable. over 30 million copies of FIFA 21 were sold. That alone is a sweet deal for SONY

If you want a companies technology and expertise an easy way is to simply purchase them.

Sony dont care too much about getting exclusives, but getting the live service tech behind Destiny is tasty for Sony who are trying to build towards live service games.
They are alittle late to the party so makes sense to buy shit instead of starting from scratch.

Heck Bungie still calls themselves an Independent studio who will self publish their shit.
But obviously if Sony calls them to help with a game they will jump in to do the job.

EA would be such a good buy for SONY. Imagine SONY owning all the sports franchises. Finally, a FIFA that is not a scam. The market is huge and it would be a great response to Call of duty leaving. We all know the yearly charts and how much money FIFA, madden, and co. reel in.
You know Sports Game will stay multiplatform right like MLB The Show they force Sony to release on Xbox and Switch

I don't know if it's hugely profitable. Or the company wouldn't be.

Also you got a source for the number of copies. I can see them saying in their reports that they had 31m players not copies.

EA in total makes about 1bn in operating income, and they made 4bn in terms of dlc/mtx.

Sure. I have no problem with them being multiplat. Even better for SONY. More sales means more money. Just like with the Bundie deal

sure. Here is a source:

I´m sure it is profitable as hell because the development cost is not as big as with a Tripple A title. Yet you have the crazy sales. It has to be profitable.

Or is this a show of power saying we can throw billions around and intend to do it again..... Back off.

What a vulgar display of power

31 Million copies of FIFA 21 were sold globally. Without any in-game purchases. You don´t think that would be something SONY is interested in? They already own a multiplat sportsgame title. Why not expand?
Because they aren't just going to deliberately lose that much revenue, purely for branding purposes. Also EA is not going to happen, too expensive for Sony. Their marketcap is currently 37.5 billion, to buy them you'll probably have to pay 50 billion. That's not something Sony can pay.

It is players not units sold.

As the publisher recently stated, over 31 million people have gotten FIFA 21 for PC or console.

You can have a look at the financial results. I was surprised by how relatively modest it was.

Strategy

They want in on the GAAS market and they basically have NOTHING of note in GAAS/multiplayer

Bungie has products, tech to share and expertise when it to multiplayer/service games

But what the point of buying them for then it would be a total waste of money

You earn money in the long run. EA owns some of the most profitable IP´s in the biz. Huge focus on multiplayer. I agree that at first, it seams like a waste of money though

What was the last Sony exclusive that was 30fps only?

Almost all of them? Which PS4 or PS3 game ran at more than 30? GoW had optional unlocked cramerate, UC4 was 60 in MP, so was KZSF with unlocked framerate in SP. GT is the only game consistent game that's 60FPS. On PS3, again there was GT, GoW had unlocked framerate, Wipeout HD R&C Future trilogy, and that's about it. But the vast majority of games is 30FPS.

True, might have been a response to Bathesda though.

If anything it was a response to Microsoft wanting Bungie to keep making more Halo when they didn't want to, and Sony have said "come make whatever you want here" (edit: as long as it's a GAAS).

Which, weirdly, seems to be more MS's approach now with their shitzillion studios.

It a bad deal man it just the sports license that you can lose if not renewal
sports game are horrible they are yearly release of the same game i have no idea why you want sony to waste resource on them when they will not matter to getting better IP's that are not force multiplatform by sports contracts

Sony would have crunched the numbers and found that Bungie represented a good investment. It's a growth investment while also plugging a hole in it's gaming portfolio (live-service, FPS).

However, show of power it is not.

This is the equivalent of me fucking someone's ex-wife who is no longer in her prime, personally think 3 billion is incredibly steep for a studio like bungie, especially the dip in quality from destiny to destiny 2

Fare thee well

I could see a company taking Valve from an aged and tired Gabe down the line. I'd rather all these businesses say no to these buyouts. I just feel this mass buyup is going to fuck everyone in the longterm.

I just hope new companies can still form under the umbrella of our future super monopolies. So far it looks like they can? Idk

Insomniac didn't have a lot of PC releases in the first place, Housemaque's track record was spotty at best and Nixxies is more of a porting studio. You have a much better chance of seeing Insomniac and Housemarque projects coming to PC today than you did three years ago. Further, none of those studios are self publishers. Given the autonomy that Sony is affording Bungie with their acquisition, I doubt another acquisition of such scale, say Capcom, would be much different. Sony and Microsoft's strategies are different and Microsoft's pockets are much deeper. Sony is going to look for quicker return on investments and disrupting a publishing strategy would be counter to their goals. If they want to go exclusive shopping, they'll look at more studios like Insomniac, Remedy for example.

While their strategies are different, both Microsoft and Sony are looking far beyond selling you hardware. There is little profit in hardware.
Still, if you look at Insomniac’s games library they had started spreading out but completely stopped after 2019, same year Sony bought them. Housemarque hasn’t once mentioned PC releases either to my knowledge. If they’re doing PC releases it’ll happen after the PS releases just like I said. And Nixxes were one of the best console to PC port houses, and nothing after the Sony acquisition. I doubt it would be any different with Capcom, Square Enix, Bamco, Konami, FROM, Ubi or whatever they could acquire. They’ve been very clear about Playstation having a higher priority ever since they started doing PC releases.

Don't think it's MS buying anybody...the Activision deal has now been referred to the FTC, so they will facing a lot more scrutiny than they expected or wanted.

I imagine it's something Sony related...my guess is they are buying Ubisoft, that would be the correct business move in the face of Microsoft's aggression.

To me, this all sucks for gamers. It's sad.

Not sure I get where you’re coming from here. PC is likely to be the best platform to play on for variety going forward since Sony and MS are releasing games their games there.

I’ll for sure be jumping on a high spec desktop at the start of next gen.

Decisions like that are only made when they have multiple benefits. There will be many more that we don't know about.

When did we go wrong when we lol at 3b?
we dosnt lol at 3b. We do (greatly) lol at someone who writes in the title "a show of power" when the direct competitor spent 70b for an entire publisher last week. That was the exact definition of "show of power".
Sony imho overpayed for Bungie because it badly needed someone capable in the fps scene and who tried it in their first party slate has been proven that wasn't good enough at it
