Report: Sony overhauling PlayStation Plus with new tiers and streaming

Go Go Neo Rangers!
Subs like this need new fresh content especially when the competition is doing it. If Sony won’t support this with day 1 releases it’s DOA. And to make it worse it will now be compared DIRECTLY to gamepass which wont be good.
If they upped the quality of games released into the Now portion and added PS5 games I think people will bite for awhile. But when that new first party game hits thats not in the service is where I see the challenge.

Doesn't PS+ work like XBL where anyone who is signed in on the console gets the benefits of the sub as long as the primary user is the home account?
Yes, but with the Nintendo family plan, you don't have to have your profile on someone else's console or any access to family members consoles for that matter. It's honestly a simpler solution that could still work with the "primary console" design.

Quick, NeoGAF must find Sony and tell them GamePass isn't profitable and will lead to lower quality games.

I was going to post an article based on a report on amazon prime but couldn't find the place regarding the topic of profitablity.

Are Sony games on Game Pass day 1? Are MS games on PSNow Day 1?

I never understood this argument when it comes to first party games, since they can only be played on said platforms regardless.

MLB The Show was on GP day 1. I don't know what the pricing structure will be, but if the highest tier is $15 a month or more, you know fans are going to complain and ask why they should pay $15 and still don't get first party games when they do on GP. It's optics. If Sony is positioning this to be their answer to GP, then it's always going to be compared to GP, for better or worse.

Or just sub for 1 month and Plat the game.
Sure, but if your monthly service doesn't convince people to stay subbed more than one month at a time, then it's a failed implementation. It's not like PlayStation Studios releases a AAA game every month, more like 2 or 3 every year.

That’s correct for the most part. If the primary user has PS+, other users on the console can play any downloaded PS+ games and play online as well. The only feature other users cannot take advantage of is the cloud saves.

Looks like more a merging of current services with a few extra goodies.

This ain't gamepass at all, Sony are still all in on big budget games they want you to spend £70 on.

Sony just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase PlayStation Plus at any tier, nor will they purchase any of Sony’s games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Sony has alienated an entire market with this move.

Sony, publicly apologize and give us a single tier that includes new releases or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Majority of Sony first-party games offer no multiplayer. Why pay $20/month for a 10-20 hour singleplayer experience when it can be purchased outright for $70?

I would, pay for it when theres games I want to play, because with sony exclusives I beat them and then dont play them again for years.

Its basically like renting games for a really good price.

It's not a competing service if first party games aren't included day 1.

Jason Schreier's own tweet says that this new subscription service is meant to compete with Xbox Game Pass. If it offers no Day 1 offerings, then it's dead in the water.

yikes, sounds like a worse version of gamepass.

Doesn't PS+ already have more than double the subscribers of Gamepass?

Also doesn't PS Now have like 7x as many titles?

I don't really see the logic that it's a failure if it isn't exactly what the other service offers.

Full disclosure:
I subscribe to both ps+ and Gamepass ultimate. And I have subscribed to PS now in the past.

Doesn’t seem like a direct competitor to Gamepass if it’s not offering first-party stuff on day 1, but I’ve been waiting for Plus and Now to merge for a while, and the PS1,PS2,PS3,PSP legacy content could be enticing.

I’ll have to see how much the tiers are but it sounds like it could be worthwhile.

More options are always good. Though I don't see it being exactly like gamepass because I don't see sony launching their games on it. It sounds more like an upgraded ps now. A library of games from every PS console is what i want to see.

I’m not expecting to get value out of a service like that. Mostly for the same reason GamePass isn’t for me. I buy most PlayStation Studios games at launch, but they won’t be included in all probability. Microsoft don’t make games I enjoy so I don’t benefit from the value of them being in their service day one.

I hope they let you sub to all three simultaneously because I want the whole Knack set.
Rest assured it stacks. Give Jimbo his money and you get all the Knack.

wonder how much tier 3 would cost
PlayStation Plus - $60/year
PlayStation Plus + Now - $120/year
PlayStation Plus + Now + more - $180/year

Xbox Live Gold - $60/year
Xbox Game Pass - $120/year
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate - $180/year

These subs are pretty useless unless they have regular new content.

I have a feeling it will just be a re jigging and rebranding of what they already have.

Sony should add new exclusives to a sub, the numbers dont lie, subs make more money then only a retail option.

Agreed. They could always go the base EA play method as well though. Where they commit to adding 1st party content, just not day and date. Maybe a year or two down the line. Seems like GamePass will still maintain the edge

MS has proven they will spend $$ when building out a subscription services, so, I'm sure they will do what is needed to keep themselves on top.

I am not fond of having so many subscriptions and I am convinced this will be bad for us in the long term, though I'll use it if it's as vfm as gp.

I was critical about gp and I'll be for this Spartacus thing even though I am more of a Sony "fanboy".

I had a feeling about this...2018 Pastebin Rumor 3 years to the day. Some coincidence.

  1. I'm a third party small developer from EU,for the last 8 months i've been helping a well known company in a AAA game development that is set to release in 2020 as a lunch game for PS5.

  2. Some infos that i'd like to share that are 99% correct(i say 99% because small incremental hardware change can occur till 2020,although specs are set in stone).

  3. -PS5 official info from Sony somewhere around next E3(Sony will not be participating on E3),i'd say Q2 2019 small reveal
  4. -PS5 release March 2020 or November 2020,not yet finalized
  5. -backward compatible
  6. -physical games & ps store
  7. -ps plus & ps plus premium ( premium-beta early access, create private servers,

If this report is true and Sony does market the service as some type of competitor/alterntive to Game Pass, who wants to bet we will never again see another "Subscription Services Are Unsustainable" thread on Gaf :messenger_tears_of_joy:
If it's your only source of revenue, it's probably true. And that's why Sony is surely not doing it, and it's even in the tweet that it's not what they are doing. No big games on the service at launch. So it's basically still just PS+.

It's a dumb tweet, and a dumb article. Sony is not going to cannibalize their sales with a subscription service when they can't satisfy demand as-is.

They might put in some premium demos though like Godfall, going by the post above about betas.

So yeah, PS+.

The competitor already exists so no I don't think that will change just because they're bundling them together
