A huge purchase is imminent within 1 month from now

My money is on steam as well, less expensive than a take two or EA but a great long term investment for the price. Putting gamepass on steam also gives them a billon quadrillion new users. I think they have enough content for the generations. Buying a few smaller studios fills out gaps without having to buy a whole publisher. Steam is my final answer. “Presses buzzer”

Mr Moose Mr Moose I assumed that when I talked about generations people would understand that I was talking about across the entire generation, but maybe I need to be more specific for people like you?

Games are already not selling on the PS5, with the best selling game on it only managing to hit 67 000 copies. That's absolutely terrible. Launch year console sales aren't indicative of the whole generation. The PS5 will sell less than the PS4 over the generation.

The PS2 did 23 million in Japan.

The PS3 did 10 million in Japan.

The PS4 did 8 million in Japan.

Do you see a trend? Combine that downward trend with the abysmal software sales of the PS5 and it should paint you a pretty decent picture of how the generation is going to go.

From what I can see, the PS4 outsold the PS3 in its first year too (PS3 did 800k in 2007, 400k in Nov-Dec 2006, so take most of november and all of Dec out of 2007 and youd likely be looking at around a million in the first 12 months). Didn't end up well for the PS4.

Last week was a bad week for them. I think even among the true believers reality started to set in a little. So here we are discussing insane things like take 2 buyouts and other public companies being bought without publicly alerting investors but Xbox Twitter whose are made aware.

Hardware Sales don’t matter, game sales don’t matter, software sales splits don’t matter, all the metrics used for success in the last 25 years don’t matter, laws for buying public companies apparently don’t matter either. Nothing matters, MS has a lot of money therefore they win. That’s it.
You forgot subscription service doesn’t matter. Oh wait it does.

Consoles in general are on a downward slide, the only reason Switch does what it does it's because it's a portable that hooks up to the tv.
Part right. Part wrong. This data is accurate from Nov 2020.

Consoles are growing faster than PC gaming segments slower than mobile. You can research actual stats as much as you like with factually correct information over at NewZoo

I'll save you the trouble - here's the free 2021 report version with some facts.

Global_Games_Market_2012-2021_per_Segment.png

At first glance you may see console numbers as going down but in fact it's increasing year on year with market revenue e.g. console vs console. The overall console market share is what is shrinking marginally due to the mobile market dominating but console growth in overall revenue is still on the up and up.

The PS2 did 23+ million in Japan.

The PS3 did 10 million in Japan.

The PS4 did 8 million in Japan.

Do you see a trend? Combine that downward trend with the abysmal software sales of the PS5 and it should paint you a pretty decent picture of how the generation is going to go.

From what I can see, the PS4 outsold the PS3 in its first year too, or at absolute worst was essentially even. Didn't end up well for the PS4.

PS4 has sold 9.4 million and has hardly any units for sale anymore, with no super-slim model.

They could have done a 200 dollar model or reduced the price and hit probably 11-12 million if they really wanted to show growth.

It's part of my frustration with Sony and PS right now...they simply are not pushing the right things. They are distracted with things on the periphery of the industry that are fads.

I think that poster was talking about in Japan, which is what I was talking about and they replied to me.

Might wanna check some more recent Japanese sales numbers lol. Playstation hardware sales have been on the downward slide there for generations. The PS5 ain't doing well. The switch on the other hand is absolutely obliterating all challengers.

Oh, my bad. Thanks for the correction mate and too true on the Switch part.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
So which acquisition by Microsoft?
Konami?
Sega?
Take Two?
Bungie?

Any others?

MS wants to get Peppa Pig game to lure its young fans to Xbox ecosystem. They are playing the long game here. That's why all the "insiders" pretend to be shocked. /s

But what if? The publisher for Peppa is... *checks notes* ... Bandai Namco.

I'd believe it when I see it. I swear, sometimes it looks like these rumors pop up by the usual suspects on Twitter with cryptic and pretentious tweets whenever MS/Xbox needs some positive momentum.
  • Xbox is buying Sega
  • Xbox is buying Crytek
  • Xbox is buying Take Two
  • Xbox is buying Warner Bros
  • Xbox is buying Square Enix
  • Xbox is buying Discord
  • Xbox has bought three studios: Netherealm, Avalanche, Crytek. "23 is now 26

^ None of these acquisition rumors ever materialized into anything.

Can it happen? Absolutely, sure, anything can happen. MS has to money to do it.

Will it happen? Another ~$10 billion studio/publisher purchase? No, I don't think so.

Housemarque is the only thing that is proven to be good that they bought so far..... Nixxes is an insult and Firesprite is unproven but could be good.

With all the extra income from crossgen and PC and mobile bullshit and the upgrade fees and increased game prices.... they should be buying something damned good. I feel like we are being squeezed and getting fuck all really in return.

True, Nixxes is a PC port studio.

Hopefully there are more better acquisition surprise from them .

I think you're underestimating Firesprite. They can be PlayStation's wild card this generation.

that’s what I don’t get

why would rabid fanboys like Alex from DF and SenjutsuSage SenjutsuSage that hang out in an XboxEra discord get some inside scoop on a corporate acquisition?

acquisitions seldom leak, they just are rumored about and are announced suddenly. People could get in much bigger trouble for leaking an acquisition than leaking a game

My 3 guesses, Microsoft buys:

Sega - obviously
Ubisoft - they're acting suspicious lately
Fifa - based on the XSX reveal trailer where soccer/football was featured along with Halo/Forza

To be fair it’s not just a Microsoft thing though.

it’s just fan fiction in quiet times.

The PS5 doing ever so slightly better than the PS4 after a single year doesn't mean it's not doing poorly. 1 million in a whole year. The best selling game for it has sold 67 000 copies lol.

Absolutely. The reason I pointed out the playstation is because the Xbox doesn't really have anywhere to slide down to, selling essentially nothing already. That just leaves the playstation.
The issue with Japan that some people who post on forums don't seem to understand is if you want Sony to keep trying to be "Japanese" and focus more on that market that means less appealing games for a lot of western gamers and less money coming in for PlayStation to put towards other games. Japan is a shrinking market and has been for a while so I don't get the "Japan is so important" stuff that keeps popping up from time to time. You need to do some things there yes but Japanese devs need western audiences to stay in business while western devs don't really need Japan. You still have the big games like Final Fantasy etc and Sony will keep working with other Japanese devs for some exclusives games like NIOH but that can't be their focus or anything close to it.

Exactly.

Especially true when we’re talking about public companies due to a problematic little thing called insider trading.

Very true. But after Bethesda's acquisition, any acquisition rumor is just automatically associated with Microsoft. And honestly, it damages MS/Xbox as well, because how are they going to meet all these ridiculous fan-fiction expectations.

The best thing to do is just not to pay attention to these attention-seeking "insiders" and "influencers." Do not give them any attention or traction if they say "someone is buying someone." If they are confident in their source and not lying, they should say "X company is buying X company".

Let them put themselves on the line, earn our attention, and either get the praise for getting it right or hear the backlash when they get it wrong.

Yeah, I do agree. But I can also remember plenty Sony is buying Take 2, Warner B, Capcom, Konami, Squeenix rumours too.

However, for me there’s a logic that dictates likely M&A activity and that says that Sony will be more active than MS over the short to medium term.

Microsoft has gone from 8 to 23 studios in three years. There are definite management challenges in scaling up like that and MS do not have the most productive set of studios today. Their short term challenge is to make that set of studios work, manage them effectively, get them producing regular content for Gamepass. Adding more and more studios is going to amplify that problem so carrying on at the same pace would be illogical.

They belong to Embracer Group already
Maybe MS is buying Embracer? I really can't think of any other company which is in MS reach (~$10bln market cap) and which sale would "make internet lawyers talk about monopoly laws". Maybe Valve but I don't think that Gabe would want to sell it..

You are delusional.
I'll make this a house analogy.
There is this house with a lil boy let's call him MrFunSocks MrFunSocks -san (in Japan) he has a Switch and PS5. But he doesn't even know what an Xbox is.

He is more likely to buy games on Switch or PS5. Because he still doesn't know what an Xbox is.

..and this house is not on fire, but during summer it can be moderately warm inside.
