PS5 sells over 1M in Japan (faster than PS4)

I wasn’t particularly impressed with this news, thankfully there were plenty of warriors at the ready to explain why.

Considering that it is actually bigger than many Japanese apartments, it is saying something.

I'm surprised people there sacrifice half their house to this monstrosity.

Just imagine trying to move this monster inside your house:

Thing that no one has touched on. A lot of popular games in Japan are not paid releases. Theres now tons of F2P games from FORTNITE to Genshin Impact. I think a lot of that is not being calculated. If someone can find out how many people are using PS5 in asian territories and what the break down is for F2P games on PS5 install wise in Japan/Asia I think that would solve the discrepancy in software.

Isn't Final Fantasy 14 huge in Japan? WHich also is a PS4 title that a lot already own and probably runs better on PS5?

There is like 2.49 Million active users each day, with over 22 Million players total(people who have installed the game).

Here;s some numbers for 2016: https://playercounter.com/final-fantasy-14-xiv/

I would assume with PS4 growing over there, and now PS5's that number might be larger especially with the fallout from WOW.

Japan and the US have about the same percentage of FFXIV players. And there’s other F2P stuff like Fortnite, Apex and Warzone that’s more popular in the US than Japan. Yet there’s no attach rate issue there.

It’s also not likely that tons of people are putting down the equivalent of $500 to play only the same F2P stuff that’s already on PS4.

There are indeed unknown factors like digital sales and F2P as you said however the reason why I stated that PS5 software sales are worrisome is that the known physical sales are simply too low, that even factoring in those other factors, give us an hint that the situation is odd.

After around 10 months PS5 disk version total sales in Japan are around 850K units, with physical software pegged at around 300K units.
That would result in a tie ratio of around 0.35 (only considering the disk based SW/HW) which is extremely low.
This is what prompt many to guess part of the japanese PS5 console sales are being diverted to other Countries.

I dont think your wrong, but also would say games people were already invested in on PS4 work without issue on PS5. And on competitive and F2P scene like fortnite, genshin, I feel having the beefier console gives you a leg up because of the performance boost in some of the titles.

But until we have more info it's all just speculation. Would not doubt retailers/private sellars reselling PS5's to China.

PS5 has sold 1 million units and the best selling games a handful at about 50k each? And then it drops fast to 20k and less.

So basically, virtually all of them bought it for gaming on old gen/BC games. Even if you added up that list, thats maybe 300k game sales.

That comparison is very misleading.

First it doesn't include all titles sales (it is based on the sales of TOP30 from Famitsu) and not include digital.
So nobody can say the real scenario of the software sales.

It's a very much incomplete comparison since clearly the list is only games that had a physical PS5 version. Not counting any games with free PS5 upgrades and/or no PS5 version at all.

For example Yakuza: Like A Dragon had a free upgrade from the PS4 version to the PS5 version.

“What about digital copies”

every other market in Europe, and the US also have relatively similar digital splits. Yet the retail attach ratio is much higher in the other regions.
Even if you assume a 50% digital ratio, it’s still rather dire.

Is that guy saying $1,500 a month is high? $2,000 a month is about as low as you're going to get in many major cities: Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York, San Fran.

In Sydney you could get a really shitty 1 bedder for about $1,200 a month but you really wouldn't want to live there.

And you're 100% right, a senior Cloud Architect is going to be paid roughly $200-300k a year.

I don't think many people have a grasp of how much money we get paid in IT. That's why I always get upset about people bitching about crunch. When you're paid this salary you should shut the fuck up and earn it. When people ask me to work overtime all I can think of is: for the money you're paying me, I'm not complaining :)

Do you have kids and/or a wife?

It's the total PS5 hardware sales after the first 43 weeks, roughly 10 months.
It's not a terrible result actually, the worrying part are the software sales.

PS5 will easily catch Wii U and PS3 in sales.
It only behind right now due the low supply.

The biggest question is how high it can go.

All of them sold to westerners?

Seriously, what game is bringing Japanese people to the PS5, exactly? That top 20 is way too skewed to the west side of things. I’m curious.

Better than PS4 a pretty low bar hopefully they can pick it up a bit but in the grand scheme of things they probably don't want to or have to appeal heavily to Japan these days.

No, they bought it for Genshin Impact.

Not that great for Sony, because they sell the hardware at a loss and people don't buy their games.

They are definitely interesting trends in terms of overall but I don't think anything about this is particularly Japanese-specific. Lower number of active platforms, lower number of physical games released and software sales becoming more focuses on mega hits is something we will see in all markets.

Yeah, it is an odd flex. “You wish they were for JPN gamers, they are all going to China thanks to the huge demand for PS5 there” 🤷‍♂️.
Bizarre.

It just highlights the massive worldwide demand for PS5. But the reality is Japan is an oddity in terms of the games played there, and PS5 is selling at a faster rate than PS4 there, just as it is everywhere else 🙌.

Time for a new spreadsheet/graph I guess.

I did my regular Friday morning Amazon F5 frenzy and came up empty yet again. Interestingly, the new CFI-1100A01 model went on sale on Amazon this morning at ¥55k and sold out immediately. There are now 8 of those same models available for just under ¥100k. Truth is that those 1 million systems have probably led to 1.5 million sales. Yahoo auctions and Rakuten are full of scalped systems at twice the retail price. Some fuckers also have the audacity to charge shipping on those outrageously inflated systems. Fuck those people.

That comparison is very misleading.

First it doesn't include all titles sales (it is based on the sales of TOP30 from Famitsu) and not include digital.
So nobody can say the real scenario of the software sales.

The situation is clear to anyone, as you can easily extrapolate what is happening outside the Top 30 - Switch titles have better legs because there is an active user-base.

Digital is still 20-30% at best for the majority of titles which don't face shortages at launch or aren't part of Nintendo's voucher program.

Most recently we found out that Resident Evil: Village had around 20% digital in Japan at launch, compared to Monster Hunter Rise which faced shortages and had digital of around 50% at launch.

We also know for a fact that the best selling physical game on the PS5 is Village at 67.000, with this type of software sales PS5 is not a viable platform for third parties in Japan. While PS4 has declined greatly as witnessed by Village again having difficulty in selling it's initial shipment regardless of bomba bin sales with 50% discounts.

For third parties it's pretty clear what you need to do in order to be successful in Japan(and outside Japan), as seen by the record financial results posted by Capcom, Konami, Koei Tecmo, Marvelous, Nippon Ichi, you can see it with the figures we do know about from Famitsu's Top 30.

If you are still in denial you are simply not wanting to see the forest for the trees but a ecosystem that can't even support 10% market share in Japan is simply not viable for third parties focused on the market going forward. PS will continue to get AAA games but outside of Square Enix, Capcom & From Software - Japanese third parties don't develop a lot of AAA games. Bandai has one game that I would classify as AAA - Tekken; Sega has one which is Total War; Koei has one which is Nioh - nothing is really at Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter type budget.
