Kotaku Attacks Major Outlets For Not Previewing FarCry 6 to Their 'Standard'

They previewed the game? Surprised they found time between all the doom scrolling and lamenting the fact that their job exists while the world is a literal capitalist hellscape.

Yes I'm still annoyed by their one article when the new consoles were launching.

What surprises me is that Kotaku still exist.

And even if kotaku was the only remain media outlet that exist, they should not criticize nothing. They are the living example of what is wrong with journalism.

“Not your grandad’s revolución,” quipped IGN. “Far Cry 6 is a huge game in every sense,” announced VG247. It “looks to be a big, beautiful game,” concluded VentureBeat. Even the previews that acknowledged the series’ troubled thematic past remained optimistic it might not get in the way this time around. “Hopefully, the enjoyment we get from flying around in our wingsuits, firing over-the-top weapons, and fighting alongside a cute wiener dog named Chorizo doesn’t contrast too harshly with the story of an island in political peril,” wrote Game Informer.

What I’ve learned from previews like these and others (Kotaku was not invited to these demos)...

Wait isn't this the game where the females are the leader of the resistance?
The protagonist is female too, right?
Shouldn't everyone be praising this game for that alone?

What else is missing from it? Not enough minorities?

They wonder why they don't get invited or blacklisted, yet openly state they aren't there to talk about the actual game, but instead its political overtones and imaginary ramifications.

Hmmm let me think why nobody wants your sorry ass and shitty opnions at these events. 🧐

given far cry's track record,
(natives were evil in farcry 3, pagan min was by far the least awful of the 3 options in 4, and Joseph Smith was right in 5, plus, well all of blood dragon )
the communists will be the bad guys, and that trumps everything else

i've defended kotaku in the past, but this is shit. i like the social directions they're pushing in but (not every game is a commentary on capitalism, which i agree is a massive problem and) i don't like this tone. inclusive and compassionate is good. this sucks.

what's the best gaming news blog for someone who checks maybe once a day?

Honestly if you are just looking for news read the topic titles here or Restera.

They conglomerate all the news, if you can scroll past all the shitty topics.

What I’ve heard much less about, if anything at all, is what Far Cry 6 does to prevent itself from feeling like another gory vacation to an exoticized country created by Canadian studios under the umbrella of a French company. Maybe that’s by design. Narrative payoffs are an easy thing to hide from preview demos under the auspices of not spoiling anything. Maybe it’s because at its core, Far Cry 6 remains fundamentally a game about finding cool and chaotic new ways to blow shit up. These underlying tensions should be at the heart of deciding what Far Cry 6 might be and whether it will be worth engaging with. But somehow, in the year of our lord 2021, such concerns are still mostly relegated to the written equivalent of a grimace emoji buried a few paragraphs from the end.
Do they even have an editor over there? This is written terribly. Can’t stand the swear words in professional journalism either. Have some class. This isn’t a stall wall in a middle school bathroom.

So this was the point of creative writing in school. I have no problem with Kotaku getting pointless clicks. I have a problem with people giving a fuck.

How dare you preview pac-man without questioning the glorification of cannibalism? And the glorification of resurrection, only to fall back to cannibalism!?!?

But seriously who gives a fuck? They just collecting a paycheck to write up some bullshit about games.

All I have to say at the moment is that fundamentally, the fun of gaming is based on fulfilling impossible fantasies that are often inherently wrong.

"in an island nation in the Caribbean where you apparently heal yourself by smoking a cigar" would 100 percent be a fantasy...and as been one since the days of Solid Snake and MGS. Why is that a criticism?

Gaming is completely ridiculous and has always been kinda "wrong". Right? That's the beauty, it's f'ing ridiculous. Always has been. Thats why when it was gaining popularity it had so many critics from parents to the government. Now the critics come from gaming media itself. Gaming is not morally good. Never was. Doesn't have to be. So much of it is about killing, almost all of it is fundamentally about killing, even Mario was about literally crushing adversaries to reach an objective. Why does anyone GAF whether it promotes the betterment of society. Surprise mFrs, it doesn't. And so long as it isn't actively promoting moral deterioration, who cares what a game contributes to humanity's collective ethos. Games are already fundamentally compromised from contributing anything to the betterment of society but frivolous good times.
You need to view this through their deranged point of view to understand what they're saying. The entire article is political. The author is salty about the fact that a French-Canadian studio is engaging in spreading some Caribbean tropes. He's one step away from calling it white supremacy or colonializm or cultural appropriation or whatever.

90% of Kotaku's target audience is the Resetera types, people need to keep that in mind when reading any Kotaku article.

The games media in the US wanted those morons and now they can live with this shitstain they helped to create, even when the stench is getting unbearable.

No sympathy from me. And if any of them ever get canceled on RetardEra I will laugh even louder.

You reap what you sow.

To be fair it does look extremely fucking bland and hardly different from the past 30000000 same-y Far Cry games, but looks like that's not even what he's complaining about.

We need a meta-article about this Kotaku article with a title like:

"If you're going to complain about other outlets' previews of Far Cry 6, at least do it right"

This is why they're salty really.
Oh, that's the reason.

See that's the answer here... Everything else Kotaku is childish drama poolry disguised as critical thinking.

Kotaku long ago learned they can get many more clicks with BS outrage articles than they can writing stuff actually about video games.

Very easy to ignore them and use other resources.

Speaks volumes that even Era posters are seeing through the thin veneer of bs that Kotaku post.

This really just comes off as saltiness over not being invited to the preview event.

Edit: I want to expand, that there are obviously right ways to critique the Far Cry formula, but a preview centered heavily around gameplay mechanics should not be the focus for trying to dredge up any potential issue you take with the politics of the game. Story was very much kept to a minimum at this preview, if my understanding is correct. To lambast fellow industry workers for not having the correct "take" is beyond shameful and I expect both a retraction and apology from the author of this nonsense. What a fucking garbage site Kotaku is.

There’s a lot of room for good videogame writing - incl. looking at “themes” and meaning, aesthetic, gameplay structure, and all of those in combination - but every attempt I’ve seen is just relentlessly political in a superficial way.

Well, it's Kotaku.

Born from the same parent company as Gawker. So if you like click bait stuff, or articles that try to ruin people's lives and sink companies, you can bookmark them as one of your fav sites to read.
But they have been bought after Hulk Hogan efficiently spread his seeds and it got leaked by them, right?
