Horizon Forbidden West Delayed to Q1 2022 (broke by Grubb, verified by Schreier)

More poor communication from Sony I guess. They literally just had a "showcase" for this game a month ago but didn't mention it. Misleading statements.

The Horizon Forbidden West State of Play was two months ago (May 27), and at that time they did say they were shooting for 2021 as best they could.

“For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can." --Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios

Shit happens.

What games are coming out on the XSX this Fall?

...The other Horizon, for one.

And Halo, assuming all goes well from here to the end for them (they also gave that vague "2021" date when they showed it in June, but MP is looking on track out on test, so that feels like it can carry hope.) And Flight Sim just released.

PS5 has DeathLoop and then a number of Director's Cut releases. (Then maybe TLoU2 Multiplayer but that's only rumors. Maybe they could have a little shocker in this supposed August showcase, but even that's not confirmed to be a thing.)

Sony started strong and kept at it through the first half of 2021 but with GT7 and Horizon FW slipping that leaves their backhalf light, while Microsoft has not had much to speak about for its next-gen releases (Hivebusters was maybe their biggest highlight? Gears Tactics maybe?) but now they're finishing out the year with some nice combos.

...Not sure if "delays" are the best way to choose a console (unless you're getting both and you had to decide which Horizon you wanted to play first?), but in the Console Wars bout, rounds 4&5 go for Microsoft after the first three were decisively scored for Sony.

Rushed out to buy a Ps5 day one due to fomo and this is where we're at.

Granted I wasnt a big fan of the first game but I'd rather have something than nothing. Still no official word on a summer event either is disappointing too

Nah, I've been enjoying mine.

People just blow shit out of proportion and overreact.

I think given the amount of games delayed, the chip shortages, and the continuing pandemic effects in general, it’s perfectly reasonable to put forward a hypothesis that it might have been a better idea to wait twelve months. Hardly an overreaction to the times we’re living in to suggest it, given how much else has been delayed.

Not too concerned about this. It's better Guerilla taking their time to polish it up instead of releasing it broken with massive day 1 patches. In fact, it's quite a relief that it's been pushed back since I got a pretty packed fall and holiday anyway, with Metroid Dread, Death Stranding and Diablo 2 taking up most of my time. Not to mention that pesky backlog.

Microsoft wasn't the company that had an event during Holiday 2020 and lied about Horizon 2, God of War 2, and GT7 being 2021 launch window games and only available on PS5. Sony was dishonest about their game schedule and cross-platform plans, and that's why they are getting flak now.
Almost no lies detected; technically they already said Horizon 2 was cross-gen at the June 2020 event. So can't say they were misleading there tbh.

But, they absolutely did advertise GT7 as PS5 only (even when a Spanish retail leak earlier listed PS4), and basically left people to interpret Ragnarok would be PS5-only given they were still quiet on a lot of their cross-gen plans at that point and people gave them benefit of the doubt their cross-gen support would end with Horizon: Forbidden West....in early (like, around March) 2021.

Misleading messaging regarding cross-gen status of Ragnarok and GT7 (and even other things that I still personally think are happening, i.e Demon's Souls Remake to PC (maybe less so to PS4 given the timing now)) was not a good idea in the long run, in hindsight.

Its not that bold if you think about....

Sony already released two big first party exclusives, R&C and Returnal and historically most 3rd party console games sell more copies on PS than Xbox plus they still have Deathloop and Kena which is also coming to PC but its PlayStation console exclusive for now. So that will cover them until next year.B

Ratchet and clank and lol returnal, are not "BIG" Sony AAA games, Ratchet is a cool game but it has sold around 1million units or so, Returnal is at 560k.

Big Sony AAA games sell well over 5mill, more like 10mill. Which is the reason they will be crossgen. It's definitely not ideal for Sony to not have one of these for the holiday IMO.

Hmmmm.

Starting to think a release delay of a year for both consoles might not have been such a bad thing.
Honestly, the industry just wasn't ready for COVID and even when COVID started, they thought work from home would solve any issues and it really wasn't an effective fix for how the industry operates.

I don't think they said anything about Horizon's platforms in June 2020? I just rewatched it to check again.

Why? Do you think I did an avatar bet with someone?

Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. Plus AOE4 on PC, and a bunch of Game Pass day 1 titles like Back 4 Blood which practically feel like games "for" Xbox.

So games that come out on PC day and date with XSX releases count as exclusives, but the same don't count for PS4\PS5 games? I don't get it.....

Not that I'd be surprised but neither of these guys are reliable sources. They're on Pachter's level.

Idk who you're referring to, but I've never counted platforms as the qualifier for exclusives. I just think of in terms of first party output, doesn't impact me whether its on PS4 or PS5 or what. Same goes with Xbox. IDC if it's on Xbox One like Halo or Horizon.

But it's stupid to ask if it counts when games come out on PC too because ALL games are going out on PC and Xbox day and date outside of unique scenarios like Flight Sim and AOE4.

You really counting PC releases as XBox games now? That looks desperate when you do not need to be. The Xbox has enough titles for the fall.

There are so many games coming to 2022... Even if I was fan of the first HZD will be kinda easy miss this game for 2022.

Well, at least you can play Horizon Forbidden West on Genshin Impact.

This fall belongs to Microsoft then. I think I may have bought my ps5 too early.

I mean, even if we do get Horizon Forbidden West this fall, MS already "owned the fall" with Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5. Both of those games are absolute juggernauts. Horizon is an amazing game but it won't come close to their sales.

That is assuming Blue Box doesn't surprise everyone - but even then, whether its MGS or Silent Hill (best case scenarios), they still won't do Halo numbers.

There's still way more games on the PS5 side though.

Do you know how many sales Zero Dawn has?

The cross-gen PS4 versions of Spider-Man / SM Miles Morales, Sackboy, and Horizon FW were listed in announcements attached to the Sept 2020 event, not that first June 2020 event. This news wasn't in the videos, it was in separate press releases.

GT7 and God of War were mentioned in a PS Blog interview last June with Herman Hulst (who would know these things) that, "Where it makes sense to develop a title for both PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue looking at that. "

Technically, the official listing for Gran Turismo 7 is still PS5 (God of War 'Ragnarok' does not yet have an official listing, just that teaser mention in the video.) However, Sony has done nothing to say otherwise when that interview hint and it led to the obvious conclusion that they've already looked and are done looking and are doing the cross-gen versions.

In almost all of these cases, the games were announced as part of a PS5 showcase, but otherwise not announced as only being next-gen releases. Only GT7 ever listed "PlayStation 5 Exclusive".

Of course, until September, we didn't know that cross-gen was part of Sony's gameplan (it seemed impossible even, given the "We believe in generations" Jim Ryan quote,) so nobody could have known until then (although it has been weird since, in one moment, people saw Miles, Horizon and GT7 and flipped their lids about how next-gen they looked, but then the cross-gen announcement came out and you started to hear a lot of, "Oh yeah, you can totally tell...".)
