"The "Alpha Point" Technical Demo features real-time demonstrations of Unreal Engine 5 on Xbox Series X|S including the implementation of next-gen features such as Nanite, which allows for unlimited triangle budget, and Lumen, which allows fully real-time lighting with none of the traditional overhead tasks. In addition, The Coalition will share a real-time character rendering test on Xbox Series X and their preliminary findings on next-gen character creation with Metahuman. This technical talk offers first-hand, in-depth lessons for developers looking to achieve the best real-time results from Unreal Engine 5"

I guarantee this demo is vastly more optimized than whatever "UE5 marketplace" demos youve seen.

The point of a tech demo like this is to get towards an actually working title figure out workflows and new techiques (something the coalition always do, their branches of UE have features that future version of UE end up getting.)

I hope so... I wouldn't guarantee it myself, though. Them putting "full production" time into a quality demo for GDC would be a questionable project, even if they are Epic's keynote partner and even if they are still probably in that experimentation phase with UE5 where you just make stuff to see what you can do. This probably isn't a slice of their next game (assuming their next game is a Gears) and they probably wouldn't be showing anything they're actually working on for a finished product (because even though this is GDC, they wouldn't want to reveal too much about a Microsoft title.) If The Coalition was an independent company looking for contracts, I could see them putting real effort into this even though this is just a demo, but them being owned by a corporation means there's little benefit to putting the time and money in for advertising themselves. And it is a tech show, so them doing fancy and cool stuff would be fun, but the job at hand is the meat-and-potatoes breakdown of UE5 experience (that said, most of the people in that room will have already used US5 Early Access, so just doing another rocks-and-lights flythrough would not tell interested developers much more that they don't already know about using the tools.)

Coalition is a skilled UE developer though, and Epic brought them in early to help pitch the new product, so all that being said, hopefully this demo has some heat to it to enjoy.

They actually haven't said anywhere yet if this is an "interactive" demo or if it's a locked scene, am I right about that? Seems like Alpha Point will have a number of modules, but I hope it's one full demo scene (with rudimentary play would be outstanding,) before they get into the breakdown modules in the Editor tools. We've seen a lot of flythroughs and simple walk-around bits with UE5 but it'd be a nice touch if it were "playable" like Epic's two demos were.

my guess is it's a fly through tech demo with scripted scenes and some metahuman characters thrown in for good measure. Not a 'playable' demo like the recent UE5 one. We'll see tho

That’s not native 4K

Serious question.

You can play a game that looks like the best pre-rendered movie ever made, but in 1080p Blu-Ray quality.

Or you can play a game that looks like RDR2 at 4k.

Which do you pick?

Are the number of pixels on screen really that important to you, vs what the final image quality is?

I really wonder why some people even play video games. If you're not happy with that screen because of pixel count I really don't what to say. It looks great.

Watching the blatant switch for unreal engine 5 has been amazing. Going from the greatest demonstration of a consoles power to “this looks like everything else“ in screens is really something.

Yeah I agree with this. Seems like now that its been confirmed the demo is capable of running on Xbox that its now being downplayed. the demo was a greater showcase when it came out and I am looking forward to seeing how it changes games like Fortnite when its launched later this year

Why are yall like this? It's not being downplayed because it's on Xbox. It's being downplayed because it's just a screenshot of an open area with rocks. We've seen more and better than this over a year ago running real-time. People want to see the game now.

It's not that hard.

Again when its a teaser for a demo of what’s its going to be why does it have to be downplayed

Because we put up with over a year of PlayStation fans gloating about how the demo could only run on PS5. Does that make it clear?

I dunno man I really hated gears 5 and barely managed to finish it . This sand sliding was boring ass shit.
And the story stopped making sense since gears 3.

For real. This is not fanboyism - it does not look special in these screenshots - maybe the video will be awesome no one knows. But if people are seriously comparing one screen shot of a black diamond thing with rock pillars to the entire debut or unreal 5 as if they are on the same level of wow factor - dunno what to tell you. It does not look that impressive considering what has been shown of unreal 5 so far and nothing really sets it apart from anything I’ve already seen of the engine. If someone is willing to tell me why this is so impressive I’m all ears

It's cool to see them trying things iwth engines etc but until I see full games running on it I'm going to keep my expectations in check.

I know some are hoping to see Gears 6 but I'd rather see something new, Gears 5 had the worst story mode and main character in the franchise history. I also think it's graphics were highly overrated, the only area that really looked great to me was the interior factory level, everything else looked flat and lifeless, the "open world" section was a huge waste and seemed to just be there as a gimmick. I'd like to see trees etc that look natural and not like they came from an old call of duty game, everything just looks so artificial in that game.

Truth.

I don't understand the obsession with pixels man. I played Last Of Us 2 on my PS4 Pro and it looked ridiculous even though I knew for a fact it wasn't native 4K.

If we're getting next gen games with this kind of image quality then fuck man count me in.

probably all since not everyone can attend. I seem to recall all talks like this being available after.
It's a virtual show this year; no one can attend.

GDC presentation typically don't go public cause it is obviously something that you have to buy into. I think you might see a clip afterwards officially though.

Right. Some GDC shows are made available to the public, but only specific ones where the contract allows (often when an actual game product is being promoted and there's a secondary business motive, not a technical breakdown of an engine or a post-mort of a title, and GDC has rights of refusal.)

Also, GDC has its own video streaming service (which user pay for) for off-site users and for watching afterwards. That service is currently the only way to watch these events live, unless the presenter has offsite rights for its presentations (or if they cut their own version of it in-house and post as a separate thing.) Often, if GDC posts interesting events itself, it's months or years afterwards, as part of a series of services for certain user groups.

That all said...

Unreal has sort of the lead spot of this GDC summer series (there was also a GDC event series in March,) and they may make some of their events public through their own channels. This particular event, and particularly the Alpha Point project since there is audience interest in what The Coalition is doing (and MS could have a win by showing off UE5 on its platform, assuming this demo is built to impress,) may be shown either in a recording or a separate release of a presentation or briefing of the demo.

Or, not.

Officially, "Alpha Point" UE5 Demo: Unlocking Artist Potential (Presented by Epic Games - Unreal Engine) is running today, July 20, at 1:20pm - 2:20pm. It is a passed event, meaning you need a GDC pass to watch the actual event live. It says it is not being recorded, but that may be GDC's services saying they're not recording it. Epic or The Coalition may be doing its own private recording by right of access.

The Coalition will debut a UE5 Technical Demo “Alpha Point” on Xbox Series X, created to internally evaluate UE5. The talk will cover the learnings the team had while creating Nanite-resolution assets and incorporating them into a fully real-time lighting scenario with Lumen and Virtual Shadow Maps. Performance and memory observations will be covered for Xbox Series X and S, as well as VFX, Blueprint, material setup, Temporal Super Resolution, and Virtual Texture findings. The Coalition will also cover some preliminary findings on next-gen character creation and MetaHumans integration, demoing a next-generation character test running on Xbox Series X.
It's possible that a version of this event will show up on the Unreal Engine Youtube page, however, it probably will not be live (Epic does not have a Live Event to add to your schedule at this time,) and there have already been other Unreal events (including the "Rigging the MetaHumans" event at 9:40AM) that have already run live but are not yet on YT, if they ever will be.

...So, tune in later today if you are interested, but don't be surprised if the demo ultimately is not shown to the public.

This GDC event has started. Unfortunately, as expected, it is not live-streaming to the public.

Check back for a possible public release of what was shown, hopefully...

it would be strange for epic to advertise it, but not show it

I'm hopeful there will eventually be a public slice of the Alpha Point project shown to an open audience, but check the "advertisements", they were pitching developers to check out a professional GDC event and not the public to check out a gaming event. It got caught up in the mainstream net, and Coalition/Epic/MS should have clarified availability (especially on Twitter, where the responses are clearly, "Awesome, Gears 6 here we come..." types of posts from gamers, not developers,) but sometimes the wheels run downhill on their own.

Alpha Point is still of some interest beyond developers, and it'll be great if they bring it public, but the primary purpose of this event is the GDC audience, and we will see if there's a secondary showing of the demo.
