Valve announces a new portable, Steam Deck

One other way this shits all over the Switch - you'll be able to pair wireless bluetooth headphones with this bad boy when it's not docked.

What a stupid fuckin' decision that was on Nintendo's part.
Isn't latency a problem with Bluetooth audio?

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

I mean, kinda? Modern bluetooth 5 wireless headphones that support aptX are only going to introduce about 50ms of latency. I guess that might be a dealbreaker for some people, but those people can just plug in headphones. I'll deal with a slight delay in audio just so I don't look like an absolute jackass in public and have the freedom to move around without tethering a cord to my head.

Comparing to the Switch - it offers wireless audio in docked mode, just not in handheld mode. Xbox and PlayStation both have the ability to use bluetooth headsets, as well as a wired port in the wireless controller itself which is a decent trade off for couch gaming. I use those technologies all the time and don't have any issues, so I suspect this will be just fine for me.

Think that strategy will work for a store? That's what I implied by "comes back a few days later" and "buys carts" though I should've made that more clear.

Here at BEST BUY we no longer sell the Switch because it's trash! We'll have GEEK SQUAD install emulators on your Steamdeck so it can run Nintendo games.

"Then why not just buy a Switch?"

Because we hate that underpowered piece of crap and we hope Nintendo goes out of business!

.... it's a bold strategy, but I don't know if it'll work.
I don't think anyone here honestly thinks that this will be a mass market device.

And that's fine. Everything doesn't have to cater to the masses or sell huge numbers to be considered a success. This isn't in any way direct competition for Nintendo, but that doesn't mean that it still isn't infinitely better than the Switch.

I still like my Switch, but it has definitely begun to feel a bit long in the tooth simply because of how anemic it is.

I think a lot of the people hoping it runs Nintendo out of business in these topics think it's a mass market device.

We can't say for sure it's "infinitely better" than the Switch. No one has actually played it in the real world. The CPU/GPU specs look good and it probably - we hope - won't have joycon drift. I'd like to know the real world battery life, for starters.

Personally, I have a gaming laptop and a gaming desktop (though the 1080ti in the desktop is all but dead) along with my Switch and a PS4. I don't care as much about graphics - everything from PS3/360 has been good enough for me. I'll pop out my DS and play GBA games on it. I mean, half the people wanting this device to put Nintendo out of business plan to use it for emulation.

We'll have to see how many Valve actually produces. Gabe mentioned that they had to struggle to get the price down, so if Valve is selling this at a loss (which is possible, especially on the low end model), they won't produce as many.

So true.

Even within the same company, I dont think Toyota thinks their Lexus brand is bad since it sells less than Camrys and Corollas at half price. Different type of product for different people with a different budget.

But console warriors go by unit sales as the gold medal excellence for best gaming. It would be like a PC gamer with a popular 1060 gpu being better than a 3000-class card because it has sold more units.

Gabe talked about a million of these in a year or so? During one of the IGN marketing videos.

So quite a bit, but PS5 has sold almost 10 million in a little more than half a year, for perspective.

1 million is a good way to test the waters. I wonder how many of each model.

For that flexibility to run any software with that hardware, it looks like a great deal - even if it will probably need a version 2 or 3 to get everything perfect.

I wonder if the "runs windows" will be scuppered by Windows 11 TPM 2 and WDM 2 GPU requirements, and even if Microsoft knew these were in the pipeline and added those specs - like the 1TB nvme2 drive spec requirement they dropped - to stop them killing the massively overpriced laptop and Windows Surface devices - which all look like they should be 60% off after this news.

As much as I lean console mostly for my TV gaming, as a PC in a handheld form factor with hybrid capabilities this is something I'll look to buy in the second wave. Would Prefer there was a widescreen model - as running windows on it with out enough screen height is going to make the UI hard to see.

Going by the specs and the price, this seems very disruptive to lots of competitors in the industry. Sony will be really regretting the BC partly line when PS3 games are running on this, and might probably change strategy for their PS4 ports coming to PC .

IMHO Nintendo will not be happy about their BC game prices compared to this emulating everything, and how this steals their thunder for a true Switch successor in the coming years.

I suspect Microsoft and hardware OEMs on PC will be livid about the hardware pricing low-low-balling and how their XsS is now in competition with a full open hybrid handheld at barely any price difference or resolution difference.

On paper, its a cool gadget. And pricey things like Oculus Rift and HIVE VR are doing fine at high price. So it might work.

Then again, those Steam Boxes were trash and disappeared fast. It was like Gabe promoted it once and never again.

We'll all have to wait and see how Steam Deck does in real life performance.

The 1tb nvme spec is only for direct storage, not windows 11.

Surface devices aren't for gaming and never have been. This won't have an impact on those devices. Those massively 'overpriced' laptops are for design/form factor choices.

When you say hardware OEMs? Which ones and which product ranges? Also the series s is still 100 usd cheaper and going to be a lot more available than the steam deck

One positive thing about this device is that even if they drop the device, they aren't dropping Steam, so the device will be supported as long as it can run the games.

Now it is having issues processing the payment (I'm using my Steam wallet balance). I'll keep trying. lol

Edit: for those failing, this is why I verified my email and phone number again yesterday, and put $10 in my Steam Wallet. Was anticipating billing issues and wanted to avoid any unneeded processing. I didn't have any issues.

I did the same but still won’t let me check out. I keep getting an error. Time to flip tables.
