Are there any Good Anime Games Actually?

Playing Scarlet Nexus has been embarrassing. The characters are generic and shit. The world is full of nonsense. The plot is predictable and pathetically told. Why did I like Japanese games at any point in life I wonder?

Feel like it's been forever since I played a Japanese game that didn't feel embarssing.

Valkryia Chronicles 4 was good, at least the gameplay. the story got really anime, but the supporting cast was still pretty personable and fun. The military didn't feel like after-school anime club at least, like in Scarlet Nexus.

13 Sentinals was a good game, but it's clearly a homage to 90s/80s anime made by older fans of that stuff, aimed at older fans.

Gravity Rush 2 was great but again felt like there was actual imagination in its creation. Didn't sell well, I guess this isn't whatt anime fans want.

Persona 5 was good, probably the only high school-themed anime game that tackles subject matter that borders on relatable. But anime fans also seem to shit on this game.

So are anime games actually good?

You literally answered your own question....

Most games are garbage. Some are good. Does this surprise you?
Except for Persona 5, those games all did poorly and don't seem much-praised amongst Japanese game fans. But hell I see a lot of criticism against P5.

Instead crap like Xenoblade 2 is and now Scarlet Nexus.

This is more me having a realization that I guess Japanese games aren't for me anymore. Maybe others feel the same.

Loving Scarlet Nexus. You can't make a post asking about your subjective truth. Some one can say x game is good, and you can say it sucks. It's not like they can change your mind, when you feel your own way about it.

I think it comes down to how much tolerance you have on that cringy stuff.
I'm pretty chill with singing kumbaya type of campy, optimistic stuff in Ys or Trails series - or even Sakura Wars (old and new)... because I don't really have to take it seriously.

Personally, I don't really find any school games that relatable though. My high school days back in Asia was in early 90s, so there's only so much I can relate. Only exception has been Persona series - as it throws in some intriguing storytelling and character developments and all.

I am not particularily fond of 8th grader syndrome type of things, when the main character him/herself don't have any sense of humor. For that reason, Final Fantasy 7, always been the borderline for me.

You do you, really... that only you can find out what sort of things you like.

Yeah, I think its the current state of anime that has influenced current games. And to counter the “you can say this about any genre argument”, every style of any form of media goes through good and shitty phases. Look at rock music, its almost undeniable that the overall mainstream rock landscape in the 80’s was complete and total ass, then it got good again in the 90s and so on and so on. Well the same goes for anime, or one might say the japanese gaming industry as a whole, although japan has def made a comeback overall. There’s def lots of shitty stuff going on in anime influenced games that makes no fucking sense. For instance, why would a dude who looks like kate moss be able to carry a sword 3 fucking times the size of his body? And then dont even get me started on the stories.

Or you just don't like them.

People "shit" on persona 5 because 4 is better.
I tried Persona 4G when it released on PC and playing it a bit I think the UI is definitely inferior to P5. I was amazed why attack types weren't color coded. And the attack name are not that imaginative that it stucks in your memory (like Fu, then Mo-Fu, evolved to Fu-Mo-Fu).

I played P5 to death and LOVED it. Maybe P4G story is better because presentation isn't better than P5.

The story and cast are much better. If you liked 5 I would highly recommend you continue with 4. Since you are on PC also recommend the community mod pack. 5 is much more stylish but you are comparing different generations.

Scarlet nexus just sucks. It's a game built during covid lockdown.

Basically all video games before ps2/Xbox are "anime games".

I'll take the anime tropes over poorly written western story, trying hard to be edgy and falling miserably.
OP seems like he's expecting a non anime story on an anime game, while also asking if anime games are good after providing examples of good games.

13 Sentinels is a must if you like sci-fi stories.

I don't know about you OP, but this is the majority with any type of game. Most are pretty standard, and some mediocre at best, then we have a few and far between that exceptional.

Just an example of this:

Of course, there are many titles I'd include here but I'm just too lazy to do it right now.

Scarlet Nexus is fire.

And I call bs on you prediciting the plot, the game's plot twists have plot twists, and some are pretty bizzare.
