Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Review Thread

Heisenberg007

Gold Journalism

Digital Foundry Summary:
  • Insomniac upgraded the final version that we saw in previous trailers
  • The RT reflection is in now 4K, not in 1080p as was in the June 2020 trailer.
  • The main characters have around a quarter-million triangles, without counting the hair/fur
  • There is an unprecedented level of detail in everything. Even the non-interactive random critters and bugs on planets and fired shotgun shells on the ground have perfect graphics as well as ray-traced reflections.
  • The dimension-hopping is also a part of the gameplay.
  • There are no frame drops or stutters when jumping between dimensions.
  • Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart looks better than the 2016 Ratchet & Clank movie in most areas.

After this and Horizon Forbidden West, I don't think anybody should be speculating and spreading FUD that Sony will be downgrading its games, or it is just the photo-mode, or the gameplay will look worse than the in-engine trailer, etc.

PlayStation Studios has proven time and time again that they upgrade games, instead of downgrading them. And speculating on potential downgrades (that never ever comes to fruition in this case) is only a waste of time and forum space.

RT reflections are checkerboarded 4K, but still an upgrade over the previous reflections

Sick. I mean I was going to buy it anyway but good to hear it’s good. I trust it is a step above 2016 ratchet - interested to see if I’m gonna be happier with quality mode

eh I dont know. Sony games get downgraded all the time. TLOU2, Days Gone and Ghost of Tshushima got some lighting downgrades. TLOU2 enemy character faces got a downgrade. Uncharted 4 had that infamous reveal trailer running at 1080p 60 fps.

But they also get upgrades all the time as well. Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 5, and now Ratchet all look better than their original gameplay demos. Horizon looks to be on par with its reveal trailer last year. Demon Souls, Returnal didnt get any downgrades either. I dont think speculating on any potential downgrades is a cardinal sin. These things happen all the time in this industry. As long as its not as bad as Watch Dogs and Anthem, it's ok to speculate.

Ohhh Titianfall 2 comparison has me interested, prob pick it up to play with the kids when I get another ps5.

I found DF's comments about the comparisons between the two games interesting. Titanfall's transitions used the same maps, just with superficial alterations, whereas Ratchet completely swaps one entire environment out for another. The only thing left is the character model of Rivet. Impressive stuff.

Not even sure what you're trying to say here....but it isnt helping your point, lol.
Yeh those reviews where they aren't allowed to use their own footage or show the console versions were definitely legit.

Cope.
Thank you.

If you feel stigma playing Mario then you must be very insecure, play whatever you enjoy. Im 40 and watch pepper pig with my son and enjoy some of the episodes no fucks given. The only people differentiating between kids and adults games are the immature people with deep insecurities.
That’s a key differentiator. I’m talking about doing it alone. Of course it’s normal to do it with your kid.

Why are we comparing the dumpster fire that is Cyberpunk to Ratchet? CDPR acted in a pretty disgraceful way and Insomniac are just pure positive vibes. Some strange derailing attempts going on, can’t we just enjoy that a 3D platformer adventure game like this is getting critical acclaim in a world where 90% of games are online buildathons that look like ass like Ark and Fortnite?

Off topic, but the fucking farce around Cyberpunk's release is going to go down as probably the absolute worst moment for games 'journalism' in history.

...at least I hope it does.
They all gave the console versions a 3s and 4s to save face, but I agree it was too late. They had already sold 14 million copies by then. 6 million of them on consoles.

I would like to see the media get held accountable for it too. I want to hear that they wont review games if all versions arent provided as part of the review copy. Otherwise this will continue to happen next gen especially with Series S now in the picture.

Seems like several reviews are saying they are experiencing numerous bugs, glitches, crashes, and even having to disconnect power from PS5.

Are these reviewers playing a different version than IGN and the other early guys?

10hr game 20hr to platinum £70-£90 depending on standard or deluxe edition…I think I’ll wait for a sale 😂.

The absolute spinelessness of all of them for not asking where the console versions were before reviewing the game was pathetic.

But I guess those Cyberpunk chairs gotta be earned somehow...
