I'd love a modern take on Quake, but only if they preserve the skill-based movement options and sense of momentum you got in the original game. I don't see it happening, though, if only because that's just not doable on a controller, and they'll be designing the game with consoles in mind.

A modern take on quake is quake champions.
I dont think microsoft are dumb enough to try and remake quake as a controller friendly game. Would be so dumb.

Last I played was Quake Arena Arcade on Xbox Live (360), didn't check out the newer release from a few years ago.
He was saying that the plot of the Doom Eternal expansions directly sets up the creation of the Cthulhu-like Gods featured in Quake 1. So he seems to think that id are planning a Quake reboot that takes place after the Doom games.

I'd say Quake Champions is a modern take on Quake 3, not the original Quake.
As for Microsoft... Do you really think they'd choose to miss out on an audience of ~50 million Xbox owners (assuming XSX/XSS sell at least as well as XBO) just to please a bunch of boomers pining after a nearly 30 year-old game with a shrinking fanbase?

Always had mixed feelings about Quake. As a technical marvel, it was very good at the time. Art design and concept wise though I felt like it was a step back from DOOM. Maybe that was just me. I always felt the early 3D low res stuff looked way uglier than pixel art ever did.
A big reason I was let down is the development of Quake. It was originally going to have RPG D&D elements and all this other stuff. The game sounded like it was going to be revolutionary, but it turned out to be just another shooter. I let myself get too hyped by reading the DOOM dev team's Quake documents on BBSes. At one point wasn't Quake the name of the hammer you had or something? It was like Thor's hammer, or something, I'm not sure. They had some expansive plans for it before it became a more straightforward shooter and was released as the follow up to DOOM.
A reboot could work, I suppose you would mostly be in grungy castles, fighting Dark Souls style dudes and monsters, and the Cthulu guys. There is plenty material there to work with. If they could wedge in a bunch of the RPG D&D style proto-Quake stuff, that would be a bonus.

Quake is more about the multiplayer side.. Doom lacks in that department.
Quake 3 was peak Quake. Quake Live was also very good.

Only if it's 12-24 months late. If it's day 1 then it can go fuck itself, motherless assholes.
They already put literally every good aspect from single player Quake into Doom, and nobody is going to make a multiplayer arena shooter again now. If they do attempt to make something with Quake in the name it's definitely not going to be Quake.
That being said, if they just want to make a Doom Eternal sequel with Quake skins/lore I'd be totally fine with it

Quake Champions is a modern take on Q3A. This will be a modern take on Q2/Q4 based on the Strogg. Hopefully more like Q2 though.

It's not a Microsoft issue, it's a modern gaming issue. There are very few pc only game genres.
