Jason Schreier: Sony’s Obsession With Blockbusters Is Stirring Unrest Within PlayStation Empire

I predict Sony will "re-structure" another studio and will pay crazy amounts of money to keep games off other platforms they normally release on before this generation is over.

Lotta people shitting on Jim Ryan here but all I see from that article is Hermen Hulst pulling triggers. Hard to tell what exactly is going on in reality, and if some of this stuff is even real or just over exaggerated as Schreier is wont to do.

Only reference to Hulst I saw was the one where he thought VASG was requiring too much money for the TLOU remake.

Hate to break this to some people, but Sony’s audience has been sending a clear message for years, and that message is that the bigger the better, that production values trump everything else, and that any good game below AAA will be considered a palate-cleansing timewaster at best, a tech demo at worst. You snubbed the smaller games, you made your bed.
True. This crowd is always making fun of other platforms for "having no games", and when i bring up a bunch of smaller, simpler or nichier titles they just laugh and imply only "big games" count.
Now the same crowd is complaining Sony killing off the production of smaller games and concentratng on AAA.

As he said, y'all made your bed. Don't complain now.

When management changes, the incumbent will always want to put their stamp on things in order to justify their position. At the end of the day this small group built a prototype/proof-of-concept and that's it. It wasn't a new IP, or a "small game". So, really the only evidence we have is that they reorganized the teams responsible for making Knack and Gravity Rush.

Doesn't seem catastrophic to me, especially as neither of those franchises exactly blew the doors off critically or commercially. Is it really such a strange idea for Sony to put all their weight behind Team Asobi who've made a far bigger splash despite their work being restricted to VR and a pack-in to demonstrate the PS5's controller? Seems like a sensible reconsolidation to me.

Yes.

It demonstrates a lack of creative imagination.
What a joke. Do you seriously think games like TLOU2, Dreams, Death Stranding or Returnal lack creative imagination? Then what do you think about Nintendo 1st party games with all their tweaked previous gens games and decades old IPs and the MS 1st party output in the recent years? Zero imagination?

The article lost me when he said Dreams could have been bigger than Roblox if only Sony had believed in it more 😂😂😂

Somebody with an axe to grind.

I pretty much agree. The whole article has a real stink of jilted ex-employee. But who knows. I mean when you step back from the outlandishly clickbait title and theme of the article, nothing too serious or egregious happened, if it even happened that way at all.

I suppose Days Gone sequel getting canned is unfortunate but, hey, I also wanted a sequel for The Order 1866 haha

Exactly.

IMO Days Gones sequel was not expected to exits... PC version was a hope to maybe the sequel exists and it still had change to that... that makes sense like I said.

One doesn’t deny the other.
Days Gone is interesting:
-Last year it was discovered to have sold over 9 million copies;
-it was patched to take advantage of PS5 in Nov, last year
-Sony added it to the PS+ collection;
-Sony referenced it in a tweet as one of the best games of last-gen (either this year or late last)
-A port has already been announced for PC;
-It’s currently on PS+;

That seems to be a lot of push for a game supposedly not getting a sequel. Especially since most of it is so recent.

Precisely, not to mention the reactions to events like State of Plays that are considered trash because they do not tend to feature big AAA surprises or annoucements but smaller creative indies :messenger_tears_of_joy:
But it's the same for everyone, not just Sony fans. It's not like Microsoft acquiring Bethesda had the same reaction as them acquiring Double Fine :messenger_tears_of_joy:
People (at least core gamers) all want the big projects that push forward what it's possible to do in games with AAA budgets.
Sony has been focusing on this the whole PS4 gen.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
The only way this is ok is if we get 2-3 games a year of the same quality level of TLOU 2.

AAAA games. not AAA

I missed that 9 million sales for Days Gone... can you source us? Because it is around 5 million if I’m not wrong.

It is always about money so unless The Last of Us Double Remastered is going to be on the PC platform, my guess would be that Days Gone 2 would haul in more money than a 3rd iteration of The Last of Us.

Fucking no talent ass clown game reviewers are a big reason for Days Gone 2 not happening. Those losers need to get a real fucking job.

Won't be surprised if Sony puts out a strong denial and Jason cry about it.

Still believe Days Gone 2 is happening. Plus remake of Last of Us isn't such a big deal. Too much exaggeration in the article with next to no substance. Naughty Dog is apparently the evil studio which consumes other small ones.

Both The Last Of Us remake and Days Gone 2 not getting the greenlight (alongside with Bend being put to work on Uncharted) happened under Shawn Layden as Hermen Hulst wasn't named head of WWS until late 2019.

I think the remake has more to do with the drama between the 2. I don't think they like people saying that the first one is god in terms of story compared to 2. They probably want to infuse unnecessary stuff to the first one(making Joel really like a terrible guy, maybe more terrible/violent with Ellie), so people can agree with the crap they did on 2. And since trying to make one of main character the good guy doesn't work, they gonna give reasons to people see "their right" in a remake of the first one.

TLOU Remake sounds fucking stupid. Hard to fault them for cancelling Days Gone 2 though, first one was pretty trash.

This will be interesting to see, will what sony think are blockbusters keep the console as a leader even if the core crowd moves on? They very clearly knew during PS3 and PS4 that targeting the core audience was the better strategy but they are clearly now aiming for the mainstream audience, the fifa players that bought the exclusives out of word of mouth. Will that crowd stay on playstation this gen?

As someone that really likes ND games and even the new GoW, if i can expect ports years down the road and there are no more unique or risky first party games, then i have very little reason to stay on the ecosystem, the games are more expensive than elsewhere and the OS features are super barebone.

When a ship is heading towards icebergs, you look to the Captain for a corrective course. Jim deserves the 'shitting on' as he is the captain of the ship, and therefore assumes responsibiltiy.

Numbers are from the promotion Sony ran last year “My PS4 Life”
That is false because their math had a big margin of error due rounding plus that numbers of players increased due it being on PS+ last year that are not counted as sales.

This site uses Trophy % to try to estimate players.

I just checked Days Gone seems to have crossed 5 million late 2020 by Zughe.

One big issue Sony is facing since years and should not be ignored is that they don't have a real competitor since pretty much never, last time Sony had a real solid competitor was MS's Xbox in the early era of Xbox 360, so with the times things like that, like the facts they start making some of the dumbest decisions ever made had high chances to happen.

That's why we always says that competition is always essential and always help to bring the best things ever.

Those are some massive generalizations. I know plenty of Sony fans like myself love those smaller games like Gravity Rush, Tearaway, Everybody's Golf, Sackboy and others. I don't want them to go anywhere so yeah, I'll complain.

What's the news? Sony wants to make big games and it's a risk. Jason wait until you find out the Pope is Catholic, that will really blow your mind. I dont understand what evidence Jason has that Gamepass is the correct option either. No articles by him on that. Getting roasted by Barlog and Druckmann on Twitter must have done a number on him.

The news is that Sony is completely losing the balance that made them the appealing option. They had several 'niche' titles to balance out Uncharted, Last of Us and Horizon.

I think I'm going to get a Series X at this point. This reminds me of when I got a 360 when the PS3 launched.

I hated TLOU, and returned it within a day. I skipped part 2. I wonder if they're going to remake the game to more closely match the TV show. This literally feels like Don Mattrick decision making centered around TV.

For the record, Days Gone is 100x better than TLOU and I really enjoyed it.

Those reviewers have way too much influence if Day's gone "critical reception" partially steered its sequel into cancellation . SIE's management needs to wake up and realize these people aren't representative of the community.
