Legit question, Why the rebrand? Live everyone knows about it. I don't understand the reason behind this other than some head honcho wanting to 'Make a difference'

It's not a rebrand. It doesn't say Xbox Network anywhere.

It's "the Xbox network". Generic. For whatever reason they're ditching the overall name for the service here, not replacing it.

Major Nelson has removed Xbox Live from his title on YouTube in the last few months too. Its not been replaced by anything but the overall brand name - Xbox.

This is a change to the service of some description, not a change of name.

It's pretty obvious something is happening with the online service at Xbox. Suffice to say, you don't lightly shutter a branding you've spent 15 years building up.

Gold going free makes sense. It getting bundled with Game Pass makes less sense, but is possible depending how they want to handle things.

What I don't really understand is why this is happening now rather than back in September or November. Some internal checklist probably, but would've been a megaton before launch. I suppose it still would be.

At the very least, here's hoping they're not waiting until summer for an explanation - especially if it's not the "right" explanation.
IMO Gold going free while bundling it with GP makes alot of sense. Its also them trying to justify a price hike. Remember when you needed Gold to play online MP with game pass, and now only Ultimate has Gold bundled?

I can see Gold going away; anyone remember when XBL Silver was a thing? Free online on Xbox is gonna for the most basic things. For everything else, need to get game pass.

The $1 deal cant last forever. At some point they will need to get more money from GP subscribers.

All this is just 1 option. Maybe they continue to build up good will and dont change anything about Gold except make it free.

Side note....ppl saying Sony would have to respond....Plus was never needed for PSNow. If anything they can just match whatever's free on Xbox Network if there is outrage.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
More or less a win for Sony they haven’t changed anything since the PlayStation Network debut 2006 look
Name changes are all about getting attention and I’m a Xbox network subscriber.

If they make XBL free, they'd have to drop the price of Game Pass Unlimited. I don't see them doing that.

Live means Vita!
Live and Vita both have four letters, the number four represents a quadrilogy therefore Xbox will no longer have only 4 face buttons and MS will have more than 4 system generations in the 4th month of the 4th year of the 4th new moon therefore it is Phil making the snow not Bill gates... but both names also have 4 letters so maybe they’re actually distantly related.

Maybe just a subtle change they feel they need to make since in the near future a lot of devices will be accessing the Xbox network, but only consoles will have a Gold requirement. Although, since cloud requires GPU, I guess that would be a wash. Probably just some stupid change that means absolutely nothing. LOL

If they have changed the name, obviously it means its not going away lol.
Imo they will end up just having everything in Ultimate at one price. If i was on console, i would prefer just one price a month, rather than seperate.

Lmao good luck thinking the multiplayer paywall will fall

I don't think they'll ever drop the multiplayer paywall, not unless their competitors do it first and they are forced. What they might do is just roll the network into GP, so that GP becomes the requirement for online play.

That would require them to differentiate GPU in a different way, though it would still include access to the PC version and cloud access. Maybe they would take to launching new software a month or two in advance on GPU, plus the EA stuff is on there.

Umm? Most of them? I bought a TV, Soundbar, and Bluetooth headphones and then had to sub monthly to streaming services, and Cable for content. Even if I bought a physical disk for content, I still have to pay for its one time shipping which is akin to the Xbox Live charge. I bought a cellphone, can buy games on it, but still have to pay a monthly service charge to my carrier, even if I were on my home WiFi 100% of the time.

Internet backbone companies charge each other access fees all the time, and could in theory charge you, but the current business model, is that as an end user, you are simply shielded from those charges by your Internet Service Provider, who in turn raises the price you pay.

I don't understand the logic that paying for something that you use, and use often, is somehow unfair. Especially something that is $5 a month paid annually. If you want to connect to their network, you need to pay for access. This is not a hard concept.

For an analogy, I have a fun car (similar in concept to buying a game), yet I still have to for gas (electricity/internet) to run it, and Excise Tax (Xbox Live charge) to use the road.
Another analogy, I own a home (game), pay for gas & electricity (internet access), yet I must still pay property taxes and homeowners insurance to live in it (Xbox Live).
If I buy all the shit I need to watch a movie, then I buy the movie itself, I can then watch that movie and all of its contents.

If I buy all the shit I need to play a game, then I buy the game itself, I can play the offline content of the game, but I have to pay a subscription to access the online content. Games like rocket league and vermintide 2 are only great if I have access to their online modes.

I don’t understand people who argue for subscription fees.

Lets wait The Verge creating an article saying Xbox Network is a better name.

Idiotic name change. Xbox Live still sounds cool, Xbox Network sounds boring.

Indeed. Not only Xbox Live is nice, Xbox Arcade as well.

Eventually, Xbox Live will just be replaced by Game Pass. They'll just require basic $10/month GP for paid online mp, while ftp will be free. They'll soften the blow by "upgrading" everyone's existing subs from XBL to GP. It'll double the price effectively (like they did already,) but many will not care cause "now they get game pass."

And $15/month GPU will shift its focus as the tier with Xcloud, EA play, etc. Live branding will go away. Everything will just be Game Pass.

How would al carte multiplayer game sales work under a gamepass only model?

Not sure what you mean, but basically nothing would change for users, except cost and the branding.

I just think they will just get rid of Xbox Live, and instead require Game Pass to play all paid multiplayer games online (non free to play). They fucked up by just trying to double the price of the XBLG multiplayer paywall without offering something else. Their approach next time will be more subtle. They'll still find a way to make everyone on Xbox consoles pay $10/month for Xbox Live Game Pass just to play online multiplayer.

Users with current XBL subs will get their remaining term converted to GP for no extra cost, and Microsoft will be able to massively increase the number of Game Pass subscribers overnight. They'll be forcing Xbox console users to pay $10/month just to play online multiplayer (except free to play) but they will get away with it (this time) because that same $10/month subscription will also get you all 1st party xbox games.

The "n" is not capitalized. So it's actually not a branding name. "network" in this instance is just a generic term for their online infrastructure. It's being used to detach themselves from the "Live" branding which is pretty clear by now is going away.

Their actual branding going forward (and the one they really want you to buy) is Xbox Game Pass.

Like at @ kyliethicc kyliethicc stated, should they ever make a change like that I doubt any changes to the underlying technology would be made. So, probably no difference at all in terms of how CoD or Madden, etc. would interface with the network. Would just be a change in the service that you needed to be subscribed to.

After the last fiasco it will probably be a minute before they try to push everyone over on to GP again. Although a move to GP would be more palatable, at least you would be doing something to increase the value vs. just doubling the price.
