Bloodborne

I bought it day one and had some issues with difficulty tillbI got stuck on a boss (can't remember which now). I quit for about a month or two and came across someone playing it on twitch. The guy was really good and made me give it another shot.

Needless to say I went back beat the game easily somehow. Then even did two more playthroughs.

Battlefield...specifically Bad Company 2...and THANK GOD I DID!

Battlefield has become my favorite mutiplayer game of all-time (followed VERY closely by Halo)

You have to understand that before Bad Company 2 my multiplayer time consisted of Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty. So I try the beta/demo of BC2 in early 2010 featuring the Rush game mode and kinda hated it. I didn't care for the gunplay or for how loud and crazy the gameplay was with all the explosions, destruction, mortars, vehicles, etc..It was just too hectic and I was rolling solo. I think I only played one round and decided it wasn't for me.

About a week or so later the game launches and I notice a group on my friends list playing it every night. After a week or so I pop into their party chat and ask what it is that they like so much about the game and that I tried it and hated it. I will always remember one dude saying to me, "Thats because you are only used to playing Halo and Modern Warfare. Battlefield plays differently and has bullet drop, you need to lead your targets, etc. It is meant for you to play a role in a squad and ptfo. Get the game and play with us and I guarantee you will learn to like it." All the others in the chat chimed in and agreed.

So I immediately go buy the game at Wal Mart - it was almost midnight - get home and play with my crew for a few hours and my eyes were opened to the absolute GLORIOS gameplay of BATTLEFIELD! I fell in love, became a YUGE fan and convert that night. I would end up not playing Call of Duty again until Warzone 10 years later.

I have no idea how many hours I have spent playing Battlefield over the last 11 years but it has been absolutely awesome the whole time and I never get tired or burned out. I regularly play Bf4, Bf1, BfV and I can't wait for BATTLEFIELD 6!

Well, Xenoblade wasn’t HD and its towns are pretty empty and not much beyond PS2-era in terms of complexity, in spite of their scale (basically no buildings to enter, few NPCs, very limited interaction with the environment).
Well on the contrary i thought Xenoblade's towns were pretty packed. Lots of NPCs to talk to and take sidequests from them with different day/night schedules and also a lot of items to find when exploring the towns.
Definitely better than to have no towns at all like with FFXIII.

And yes Wii wasn't HD but the amount of density, scale and almost non-existing loading times that it had made Kitase's excuses laughable to say the least.

I actually do want to give FFXIII a second chance though. I have a feeling that this time i will enjoy it much more than i first did. I may even finally get to play its sequels that i have them sitting on my shelves for years now.

Borderlands 2. I hated it when I first played it but gave it a second try a few years later and liked it. The gameplay anyway, the writing is god awful.

I'll say after MULTIPLE chances, Demon's Souls.

I purchased the original on PS3 when it launched thinking I would love it. I hated it. It had nothing to do with the difficulty either, I just thought it felt clunky and janky. Not long after I sold it. This also left me with this feeling of, "I hate Souls games because they're all the same clunk and jank." However, I would always buy them because I loved everything about them, aside from what I categorized as clunk and jank.

TL;DR, I got Demon's Souls on PS5 and it clicked. It clicked incredibly HARD. Not really sure what it was, but I absolutely adored my experience with it. So much so that I revisited previous Souls and affiliated games and dug them more than ever before.

I've been wanting to get deeper in the Bloodborne SO bad. But I'm using every ounce of strength to hold out until the infamous PS5 patch, or PC release. 👀

Dragon Age Inquisition. I thought it was pretty easy and boring at first, but heard that it changes once you are able to select your second class. Then once I got strong enough to kill dragons, I went on a dragon genocide mission. They have tons of loot when you kill them.

I never got very far in Dragon Age 2, I thought that game was a pile of shit from the beginning and never bothered.

The first Last of Us. I didn't care that much for it on PS3. But once the Remastered version came out and I played it on Survival mode, all of the sudden I understood the game and it became a masterpiece in every way.

I dont plan on revisiting part 2.
This is exactly me. I was confused about the attention it was receiving, until the PS4 version released and I said I'll try it out once more. Low and behold, I couldn't believe how long I let that game lay dormant in my conscious for so long. That game deserved every reward it got and then some.

If only part 2 had been just as good.

Portal.

At first i thought it was just a puzzle game and didn't play that much. But when i realized it's much more than that, i got hooked pretty badly. To the point where Portal 2 is still in my top 10 games of all time.

For me it was the first last of us, didnt really like the walking sections of the game (moving bins to get up ladders and stuff) after a 3rd time playing it i was hooked from start to finish

Metro Exodus.

I wasn't into it at all the first three hours, dropped it and thought I would never return. Proclaimed 2021 to be the year of the backlog and gave it another chance. Finished it in February after about 26 hours and man, what a ride it was. The game is not without its issues but I loved the story and the environments as well as some of the characters. Really happy I decided to give it a second chance.

Just did the same thing with God of War. Hope it pays off.

Kingdom Hearts. Once you get past the generic anime OCs and convoluted original content, the sheer charm and greatness of the Disney elements wins you over.

Bloidborne, first time getting to the cleric beast I said “fuck this game” picked it back up when the old hunters dropped and finished the game and expansion. Also got the platinum. This game made me go and purchase all of the souls games, sekiro and mortal shell. Waited to get demons on ps5. Opened a whole new world of games to me once I figured it out.

First Mass Effect. I played it an hour and seemed like I wasn't going to enjoy it so I passed the game to my bro. One month later and told me it's the best game he played in a long time. And I gave it a second chance and it's one of my favorite game to date.

LOL Final Fantasy 6. First tried and didn’t get past Narshe (Snes, i was you g and impatient, and it was a rental).

Then my brother gets me into playing Chrono Trigger and i ate that game day and night. Later rented 6 again and loved it to death.

I guess my taste buds (or my love for RPG’s) needed some time more in the oven 🤣🤣🤣

Persona 5 with Royal. When I first played it I thought it was ok at best, a 7'ish game, overrated to be sure but decided to get Royal because at that time I had really nothing else to play and somehow it grew on me quite a lot.

Nier Automata

Thought it was boring and ugly and really regretted my purchase, put it down after a couple of hours

Tried it again when it was added to Gamepass, got a little bit further and it clicked. Now I struggle to think of too many games last gen that I liked that much.

Bloodborne. Got absolutely shafted in the early stages and gave up. Kept hearing so many cool things about it and managed to force through it until it clicked and loved it for the rest of the game.

The Prey reboot. Got it on release on PS4 but sold it like a week later as I just couldn't get into it at all. Fast forward a year or 2 and it's on sale on Xbox with all the DLC for like £8, thought why not give it another go? Couldn't put it down this time it just 'clicked' for some reason. No spoilers but the ending was soooo good, I didn't expect all your choices through out the entire playthrough to actually mean something by the end. Was pretty dope when I got some rare achievements pop up when it was over.

The non disney stuff is what I like the most in Kingdom Hearts lol And it's the reason why I was interested in Final Fantasy VS XIII, because it was basically Kingdom Hearts without Disney.

Clintizzle

Lord of Edge.
Rage 2.

I don't know if it was the lockdown (covid) effect where I found myself restless and bored of having nothing to do. The game had solid gameplay which kinda helped ignore the meh story and open-world collect-a-thons.

So you just don’t like Disney or never grew up with it or...?

I'm sure there are heaps, but i can't quite remember them at the moment.. Diablo 3, but i never really loved it.. Final Fantasy 12... Hmmm... Dishonored 2 when i finally had enough time to focus on it - but i still didn't get sucked in enough to beat it...

I wish Age of Empires 3 could have done it, but no, permanent dross.

Metal Gear Solid 2, it took me like 15 years to be bothered beating those Rays.

Ohohoh, Persona 4 Golden on my Vita. Had to watch someone else play it for a few weeks before i finally got into it.

It's not that I don't like Disney (although I do hate songs in Disney movies), there are several disney movies I like, Treasure Planet being my favorite animation movie ever (though it's possibly the least "disney" of the disney movies, and it's not in Kingdom Hearts...).

But the disney theme isn't particularly a plus for me in Kingdom Hearts, I like Kingdom Hearts because it's Final Fantasy as an action game, I always liked the art and worlds of Final Fantasy games but always hated turn based, while I love the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts.

I don't really mind the disney worlds, but I don't need them either, and if I could have a game like Kingdom Hearts but set completely in its own universe for a more consistent and structured world, I would like it. And like I said, it's also that my favorite moments in the series have always been the non disney moments. Most of the emotional scenes were with Kingdom Hearts' own characters, not the disney ones, for example. The disney worlds are more like fillers between the more important Kingdom Hearts parts.

Also having grown up with something or not doesn't really affect my judgement, I like what I like now and dislike what I dislike now, nostalgia isn't important for me to change my mind on something.

Treasure Planet is my favourite Disney movie as well!

I feel like FFXVI would be more your thing then, no?

Yeah I’ve never gotten any emotion out of any of the original characters from Kingdom Hearts. I think they are some of the blandest, most braindead, generic, stock anime archetypes in all fiction.

At least the Disney characters are actually expressive and can evoke laughter or happiness due to their extreme charm and warmth.

Even the scenes that are unintentionally hilarious like Goofy’s death are 10x more interesting than anything going on with the original characters because at the very least it’s something unique and has never been done before.

Edgy anime characters spouting off about their vague existential crisis or “darkness” is nothing new and has been done infinitely better in other media.

Well I'm not sure what to say, we don't have the same tastes, but, KH 2 spoilers :
The prologue of Kingdom Hearts 2 is one of the best moments in the series for me. The end of this prologue is one of the most emotional and saddest moments I've felt in a game. Roxas realizing what he really is, that he doesn't really exist, and that he is going to dissapear, stop existing, when seeing Sora, and feeling envious for him, was hartbreaking. It's more than just a regular death, and I think it was done really well.

The Surge, after seeing some of the screenshots I tried the game trial but I couldn't have progress, I wanted to play the game, then I see it on sale and bought it and after understanding the gameplay I enjoyed the game, I'm always recommending this game to any soulslike fan

This was indeed a good scene.

But I mean... we barely even got to know Roxas or any of his friends. His attachment to the “real world” literally means nothing so him finding out he doesn’t really exist also means nothing.

But yes, as a kid, back then this scene did fuck me up. 😭

I have 2. I played skyrim on ps3 and just hated it. I got the special edition on xbox one and loved it because I went for a caster fighter build and it was so much better. Years later I found all the glitches funny and I hope they never remove them.

2nd one is weird. I played demon souls and hated it not because of the game but that framerate was so bad on ps3. sub 30. I never played a souls game again until scholar of the first sin and loved it and it made me fall in love with the whole genra.

Demon's Souls.

Originally bought and played it in 2010 I believe and gave up after 5 or so hours. Four years later I gave it another shot and loved it. Beat it and then Dark Souls 1 and 2 all within a month or so.

Dark Souls 2. I was stuck on Fume Knight for the longest time but was able to finish the game and it is much better than I thought

Ori and the Blind Forest (quit the first time after 3 hours; clicked on the second playthrough)
Ratchet & Clank 2016 (didn't go past the second planet the first two times; finished it and absolutely fell in love with it the third time)
The Witcher 3 (took me the third playthrough to go past White Orchard)

I'm hoping Deux Ex: Mankind Divided would be the next to click (it'll be my third attempt).

funny how this turned into Dark Souls: The Thread. I was always into Dark Souls but the Souls series ruined Zelda for me. I don’t have the patience to play any Zelda anymore unless From Software develops the next Zelda entry. For me, Dark Souls is what Zelda would look like and play like if it grew up alongside me.

right now the game I have put on hold and will probably like when I give it a 2nd chance is DQ11 I just don’t have the free time to play it for hours on end

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen. Only played it because it was on PS+ and it took me 3 tries over a year or so before it clicked, and I ended up 1 trophy shy of the platinum. Later I bought the Steam version, now I kinda want to do a modded playthrough.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

The first hour was so tedious for me (and in hindsight its not) that i didnt touch it for weeks.
One day I decided to push through and see what it was about, and oh boy once I hit that cut scene after you fight Malos for the first time i was hooked!!

My most recent ones were Vampyr and The Sinking City last spring...both tried at launch and neither clicked...came back when we got locked down and they worked. Vampyr was particularly timely lol

Burnout Paradise. Even wrote a review how much I dislike the open world.

Played the ultimate version a few years later on PC and absolutely loved it. One of the best arcade racers in existence (after learning the street layout), especially with you own favorite music to back it up.

Skyrim - I couldn't deal with the janky, floaty combat the first time around and gave up on it after a couple of hours. On a whim, I tried it again last year once quarantine started since I needed a world to get lost in, and I loved it. Admittedly, the version I ended up playing was a heavily modded one, but still it proved to be a great time for dozens of hours.

The 2009 Demon's Souls. I borrowed it from friend in 2010, he only let me borrow it for a couple of weeks and I only got past the the Phalanx. It peaked my interest then but I didn't pick it back up till 2016. From that point forward, ever From Software game has become something I always look forward to playing.

It took me a really long time to get into The Witcher 3, like it sat in my library for 2 years and I tried it several times during that kind of long. I hated the sluggish imprecise controls even after alt mode was added. Eventually the story and setting clicked and I loved the game by the end, but never liked the controls still.

Most recently, Skyward Sword and Code Veronica: X.

When Skyward Sword released my goodwill for Nintendo and the Wii had long been exhausted. Skyward Sword just came off as incredibly disjointed and a complete mess, visually and gameplay wise. I'm glad I went back because the visuals are gorgeous on the WiiU gamepad, controls are good too. The main thing though is that the music and some of the dungeons are top-tier Zelda. The game still has it's share of issues with Fi and backtracking but it's a game totally worth playing. That being said, I think the reception for it on the Switch is going to be awful. BOTW changed everything and SS has aged the worst because of it.

As for CV:X, I played it on the DC and preordered it when it released on the PS2, it never stuck with me and seemed like a major step back from Nemesis. It still is a step back from Nemesis in certain ways but in terms of controls, music, and gameplay. CV:X is hands down one of the best experiences you can have with classic RE gameplay. The game is long and there are puzzles like crazy. I still think the story is trash but I play through the game probably twice a year now. It's an absolute treat.

Zelda Breath of the Wild to an extent. I loved the game, but the breaking of weapons bothered the hell out of me and I kind of stopped playing after a dozen or so hours in my first try. I came back a few months later and really just fell in love with the game after accepting the weapons system for what it is. Went and did everything in the game except for the Korok poop.
I got burned out when looking for shrines. Probably put like 30-40 hours in, took a break for probably 1.5 months, went back, still wasn't feeling it but stuck with it. Once I had the master sword and some increased stamina I felt like a frigging tank and that's when the game clicked and I really started enjoying it. Being able to explore and not be dominated, etc. I don't think the game is anywhere near the "GOAT", etc. but it's an awesome game through and through and man, when I stormed Hyrule Castle and the 4 divine beasts helped me with Ganon, I truly felt like I had accomplished something. This epic quest spanning over 100 years was finally over. I really enjoyed it. I'll probably never play through it again from scratch but I do intend on jumping back in at some point and doing various side quests and the remaining shrines, I think I have 10 left or so.
