Could 2021 become one of the worst years for gaming in history?

Because of the worldwide hardware shortage, there are just not enough graphic cards and next-gen consoles produced. And because of the shortage scalpers will artificially make the situation even worse. According to a lot of industrial insiders, it will probably take up until Q3 or even Q4 2021 until the shortage is getting resolved and maybe until Q1 2022 before there are enough new systems produced.

We already have a lot of games getting rescheduled to 2022 and when the userbase stays as small as it is and will not grow enough they will of course wait to release their AAA titles. Sony and Microsoft have already abandoned their old systems. Only Nintendo may release some games on the Switch. Maybe a new Zelda? There will not be another Ghost Of Tsushima this year or anything similar für the PS4 or the XBox. They will not release the new Halo this year for the old systems or PC.

So 2021 will either become the year of the next gen remakes to at least make some money or we will have the worst drought in history. Steam will probably sell a lot of older games, and people will just put the graphics to max, so they look good, but there is not that much for the consoles. Also, if this is all true, Nintendo could be the big winner when they present their new system in 2022.

Sure but 2014 was worse in my opinion. Mediocre Dragon Age and Shadow of Mordor (LoTR game, whatever it’s called) fought it out for GOTY. Imagine that. Now, at least they have excuse. I can live with Sony’s PS Plus offering though, FF VII next month, Control this one, all the games I haven’t played. But no denying it, this whole next gen launch was and is one big mess.

No for me, in 2021 there are games I already released and coming out that I really like.

Atelier Ryza 2
Bravely Default 2
Monster Hunter Rise
NieR Replicant vers 1.22
Kena: Bridge of Spirits
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade
We talk 2021, your list is straight up 2010s. Hell, FF7 is a PS1 game. Man, it's good to live in past and survive on nostalgia alone. See you in 10 years man, I'm telling you, 2020 is gonna be brutal!

So far I’m not too imp, I don’t care much for AAA games so it’s whatever, I’m just hopeful that Nintendo will remake Zelda oracle of ages/seasons, that would be good enough for me tbh.

It's like people are hoping it's going to suck at this point.

We're only in February and it's already been a decent year and there are plenty of games releasing this year I'm looking forward to playing

FF7Remake has different combat system and even different story, I dont care what it says on the box that game is spinoff/sequel of FF7 rather than "remake". Nier Replicant ver.1.22 is the only remaster.......so what are we talking about here?

2010. Straight up a decade old games. Pure nostalgia fuel that you seem to enjoy and ignore all the tech advancements of the last decade. Ok, cool with me, but it's not a 2021 games, not even close. Most people didn't bought PS5 to play Nier or Atelier, PC's with GTX 3090 is not for playing MH Switch. We talk 2021 being a terrible year for new games and it absolutely is.

It's not a terrible year. You just have a very narrow taste in games

I mean, it's possible. But that could change as it's just about to be March and there could still be a number of announcements to save the year. That being said, I don't think it's one of the worst years at all. There are still games I'm looking forward to.

Cool that you don't care about those games but I do so its good year for me and I bought PS5 to play games and enjoy them not to drool over graphics.

I'd say nah, but if I can't get a reasonably priced upgrade for my 970 this year I'm gonna be super pissed off.

LoL, sure, let's just ignore the first game of the gen contender

Seriously though, it seems like it might be rather weak, though after the year we just had that isn't surprising.
But if we get RE Village, Halo Infinite, Horizon, SMTV (they said 2021!!), Hollow Knight Silksong I'd still say it's far better than 2014.

Nope

Hitman 3
Returnal
Outriders
Oddworld
Kena
Nier
BIomutant
REVILLAGE
Ratchet & Clank
Horizon
Halo

Some other smaller games sprinkled in too

Looks good for me
At least 2 (maybe more) of those will be 2022 titles.

And about Starfield, if it makes it this year, it will be a buggy mess for at least half a year.

Stuff I have my eye on-

Monster Hunter Rise
Kena Bridge of Spirits
Resident Evil Village
Diablo 2 Resurrected

You recommended them, so they have my attention-
Nier
Bravely Default 2 - Wonder if I should get the first on the DS.

Possible delays
Horizon Forbidden West
Tales of Arise

In development stuff
Everspace 2
Baldur's Gate 3

Not to mention the possibilities of a sudden Nintendo Direct, Sony State of Play, Xbox event.

Kingdom Hearts, Days gone are coming onto PC.

Persona 5 Strikers and 4 Golden are on PC. So it seems logical Royal will be coming to PC also. Sony has also said more games will be ported to PC.

So actually pretty exciting to see what happens next.

I got a Series X (little brother was able to get a PS5 at launch too) but literally everyone I know hasn't been able to get ahold of one of the new systems. But we are living in a pandemic, something previous gens never had.

Software wise it's about average for a year 1. Lots of trailers and promises pre launch and they start getting spread out because they don't want to cannibalize themselves.

Software wise it's looking OK. But then what's the point of having the games if people don't have the stuff to play them on.

Yeah the quality of games this far has been atrocious and doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon. Should say something that an early access pixel Viking game has over 4 million sales with gamers frothing at the mouth. Peeps are thirsty out here…

As long as King of Fighters 15 comes out, we'll all be ok. If that gets delayed too, then you have my permission to panic.

We should also get a very highly rated Tom Brady in Madden since he won the Super Bowl again. Turn that frown upside down OP>

I detect no lies here.

I’ve enjoyed some playthroughs but all in all this year is still a snoozefest.

The upside is that the game delays makes the supply issues less problematic. I honestly wouldn’t recommend the new consoles to anyone at this point. For PS5, stay calm and wait for a revision with a bigger SSD. For XSX, stay calm and wait for some 1st party games to arrive. Just sit back and wait, there really is no rush at all.

Ooof that's a rough looking list of games to look forward to if you have a next gen system.

I do have PS5 and can safely say I’m more excited for games like Monster Hunter Rise and NieR Replicant more than God of War Ragnarok and this coming from the guy who platinum God of War 2018.

LOL at some of the so-called gamers on this board. We're a little than 4 months into this console cycle and people are saying it the worst ever.?
Back in the old days we still be waiting for a Japanse console to even launch in the West some 4 months after its Japanese launch. It's like the 360 didn't have massive issues with supply months after it launched, never mind how it took until March for games to actually come out that showed off the system (GRAW, FF 3) same for the DC launch in Japan massive supply issues and it took months to see what the system could really do.

That's to look over how long it took for real quality software to hit the PS2, Dreamcast, 360, Mega Drive.
