Agreed. But it's funny how this works sometimes.

I don't know if all departments communicate with each other. Wouldn't it make sense NOT to put two potential, decently big games in the same month and instead spread it out? I guess there's other logistics we don't know. Figure some Companies would know by now.

I think both Housemarque (Returnal) and Ember Labs (Kena) are in Sony's trials for acquisition. Both add nice flavors to PS Studios, this Returnal Arcade-like shooter is interesting, and Kena is one of my most anticipated games!

This feels like a mix of Souls games (but with so much pace) and Resogun. Not fan of either, but might bite and give Returnal a try.

Just fun facts:

Gran Turismo, created by Sony, is one of the best selling game franchises. As of 2019, the series has sold 80.04 million units worldwide. The series also grossed over $4 billion in sales revenue, as of 2017.

It's the official FiA racing game for eSport:

But Forza is the biggest, most famous racing game in his house anyway, so that counts for something, I guess.

This feels like PS Plus May 2021 PS5 game.

As a fan of both Souls and Resogun this has the potential to be one of the best games of the year imo. Im afraid it wont be a commercial hit though, at least not within the first year.

I do think it can become a classic over the generation like Bloodborne became, i mean not everyone bought it at launch but now its probably in the top 5 most revered PS4 exclusives and people are begging for a PC port/Remaster. Demons Souls is also a great example that went from what looked like a commercial failure to a slow burning juggernaut.

Wow, this 8 minute gameplay demo has interested me in the game in a way no trailer prior has done so. I figured the game was meshing 3rd person shooter with bullet hell SHMUP, but I didn't realise all the cool moves you can do, or just how freaky the enemy designs are.

I'm a believer now. This game has got some potential, for sure.

I think LXC is supported by the linux kernel natively, no? It's certainly quite possible, probably likely that it wouldn't work for a quick resume feature, I was just thinking they would utilize that or FreeBSD jails. But you are right, I was thinking of disk snapshots and not memory again. I have no idea how PS OS operates, LOL. This is a very touchy subject for you. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I just like to argue sometimes.

If it turns out I’m wrong, luckily I also enjoy getting clowned on.

Win / win situation for me!

I know I'm particularly annoying sometimes and I don't mind being reminded of it Zoro7 Zoro7 . I'll try to cool it; my brain doesn't let me sometimes.

Hopefully in a few months they'll find the right mix of pills for me.

I'll let you decide if I'm kidding or not.

My initial point was that you do for the most part come across intelligent but slightly obnoxious. But me triggering all your posts was stupid. No more triggering i promise!

I think its hard for videos to do the game justice. Their previous games have been awesome so this is a must-buy for me even if it doesn't end up on Plus. Finally Housemarque have the budget they deserve, I just hope the sales follow. I don't get why Sony doesn't market it more 🙁
It's a $70 roguelite from an indie developer known for tight controls in arcade games that notoriously do not look all that great in preview videos. It's also going to be all those niche things on a system infamous for not being available for purchase.

I like Housemarque, but I wonder if the reason we aren't seeing any more from the story side is because this game is as shallow as I fear. I'm cautious about this one, so I'm holding off for a sale at least.

Returnal should be $15 max. Trying to pass this off as an AAA game is disingenuous.

It's third person resogun.

"Roguelite" means you have to start the game over every time you die right?

Never really played those... i imagine they aren't particularly long games usually?

It always depend on your level of course , but most roguelike/lite I played had sessions between 20 min and I'd say 2 hours.
there are of course variation depending on games, like doing victory run in Tboi (in which the sessions reset but not everything you collected you it is technically the same run.
but yeah it is fair to say about 1 hour sessions, but I'd nuance it, most of the rogue**** i played were mostly low budget indies, maybe returnal will have longer sessions.

You serious? If Returnal is $15, The Medium should be $1.
Tedium should be $15 too.

These games are very basic. I would not even compare them with something like Miles which costs $50 and The Lost Legacy which cost $40.

It's an interesting subject, regardless since Sony is so tight lipped on how the OS functions (in comparison to the info MS has released). MS was definitely more forward thinking here. Especially if Sony isn't even using a software container, which regardless of quick resume, would at least allow them to spin up a different OS image for older software etc. I guess they might have to keep all the old libraries available forever going forward for back compat. Whereas MS can chuck the works if they like for new software and just run the old game OS for the dated software.

It's possible they are already using virtualization and not saying anything.

But containerization just doesn't work the same way; Sony could be using that too.. but it wouldn't enable a system-wide feature like Xbox has. They do have the ability to watch a video while playing a game, almost like the original Xbox One "snap" with the tutorial thing. That might be using containerization, in fact..pretty likely. So I retract my laugh at that lol

The "tricks" on Linux that enable sort-of-works-sometimes "dump an app" using process pausing, and then attempt to successfully dump the objects the app is referencing in memory to file. Then attempt to re-load that and un-pause later.. but because the entire state of the system isn't actually paused, it's.. far from full proof. Even just pausing/resuming a process w/o dumping to file is not full proof on Linux or Windows. Virtualziation also doesn't make it full proof, but at least the state of the kernel is also paused.

If a game supported "save anywhere" and auto-saved any time you exited out, they could present a "card" in Sony's UI, and have you jump right back into the action. That would be an easier way to do it, and require far less hard drive space, as only that save file would be needed.

Most games, particularly on console, don't really support true "save anywhere" though. It's usually "you can save, but when you load the game back up you aren't actually loading right where you were, just the most recent checkpoint." Particularly when you are in a mission; games that do have an explicit "save" option often disable it during missions.

That's the nice thing about quick resume; and what's nice about using "rest modes" too. I used it a lot on my PS4 Pro because I much prefer just being EXACTLY where I left off when I stop a gaming session, rather than having to load to the last checkpoint.

A great Roguelite platformer is Rogue Legacy. Give it a try :) There's also Dead Cells but I didn't enjoy that nearly as much.

I think its awesome that they are bringing arcade and roguelite to AAA. Its been a long time coming tbh

£70 is ridiculous tbh, its making me not pull the trigger on games i normally would

like Godfall, i knew i would enjoy it but also knew it wont be for long so didnt buy it on launch... bought it later for £50 (still high but tolerable) and loved the game

I hope £70 isnt the norm, like i'll pay £70 for next UC or God Of War but have some tier system, there is not a bone in my body thats tempted by Returnal at £70!!! but i would have bought it at £60, its a weird line to draw but here we are

That is the big get. To be exactly where you left off. I don't use rest mode since I live in an area with frequent electrical storms, would be a recipe for disaster with all the 15 second - 30 second outages, though I guess I could setup a UPS. Really looking forward to this feature whenever the scalpers quit buying up all the supply.

If you’re asking 70$ at launch even though there’s other pricing tiers (50, 30), then either you’re a big brand or the game is really really good.

Otherwise it’s just bullshit move to see who bites before the game goes into the discount bin.

Returnal looks like a game that will be 30$ two months after it releases and will be on PSNow/Ps+ before the end of the year.

What’s the point?

That was exactly my impression of the game too. Now I'm intrigued to watch the video when I can get some proper free time.

Come on man. HouseMarque-> Resogun. That should tell you enough!!! 😉
Edit: I didn't like resogun much on my first playthrough either. The second was so much better, it made me appreciate the game better.

This is where i'm at. I understand the reasoning behind the game price increase (less so, as in the UK game prices have been increasing every gen since the PS1). Now I've moved to Canada, the idea of spending so much on a game that isn't a top tier block buster is just a non-starter.

TBF, I buy most of my games 4 to 6 months post-release when they're discounted. And I don't think I'll have much problem doing the same again this coming gen.
