SaGA Frontier Remastered coming to Switch, PS4, PC Summer 2021

Are the Saga games connected, or are they like Final Fantasy?
They are not connected. SaGa Frontier is an interesting game to remaster, it wasn't particularly well loved when compared to Square's output during the PS1 era. The inclusion of new content, including the cut protagonist is definitely interesting but I'm curious how "HD" the 2D elements of the game are and whether or not they ran the backgrounds through an AI upscaler. They haven't in the past with the Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 remasters.

I can't remember if this game was as incomprehensible as the rest of the series, but SaGa Frontier 2 certainly was... But it's so gorgeous at the same time. I'll probably pick this up to sate my masochism.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I loved JRPGs back then, Panzer Dragoon Saga, FFIX, Xenogears, Grandia, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy Tactics were some of my favorites so I don't think it was my at the time lesser comprehension of the English language that stopped me from enjoying it. I was confused, I had no idea if there was a plot to follow or just random npc chatter that didn't connect to anything. It was also depressing as fuck in the area I was last in (I seem to recall stuff about gangsters and gambling in some dystopia, I could be very wrong, it's not like I've touched it since the 90s or anything), the music, bleak grey visuals, the cluelessness, maybe it was intentional but I don't think I finished it. This remaster looks pretty decent compared to their other efforts that ruin the sprites and stuff, is it just AI upscaled (and maybe it works nice cos they were sprites made of 3D renders I think?)?

This is wonderful. I don’t have to get out the PS1 disc in order to play it. I sure hope they do the same thing with the 2nd game. Pretty soon we’ll have the whole SaGa series of games on modern devices. I hope Square keeps this up. I’d love to see more of their classic games get re-released.

Sounds like they're adding content that was cut when the game was originally released.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Oh shit I’m super excited plus they’re adding the cut content!!

FYI, this is probably the most playable SaGa game... and the easiest

Wow, an HD remaster of a 2D game that actually works with the art style from Square Enix? I remember spending a few hours with a rental of this back in the PS1 era and being confused as hell. It seems like a super deep game, though.

Hope so. From what I remember it was a bunch of short stories that didn't really amount to anything. It's been a long time though. I also think I played this after FF7.

This was a time when there were so many great RPGs that I cant tell if it underwhelmed because of that, or that it just wasn't that good.

I wonder why the saga series and mana series getting so much love from square these days. Are these games really more popular than chrono trigger? xenogears? Parasite eve?
Maybe cause the director of FFXVI did the saga series. Would be funny if that was one of his conditions for directing the new final fantasy.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
First of all, this is awesome.

Secondly, it's weird that these remasters of SaGa games exist at all. We're getting the SaGa collection in a few weeks, which is the first three GameBoy games. Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 are out for modern consoles as well. This is coming, as I'm sure SaGa Frontier 2 is (seriously, why would they go to all the trouble of making this if the sequel wasn't already in the works using the same tools?). That just leaves two PS2 games (the first Romancing SaGa remake, and Unlimited SaGa, both which had a US release) and some internet / mobile titles and the entire franchise is playable on modern stuff.

Meanwhile, the Final Fantasy series is more popular than ever. If they made a Final Fantasy V or VI remake using this type of style, it would be amazing. Even though it could be an obviously budget title, as long as they put care and love into re-crafting these games - like it looks like they did here - it would be a triumph. Seems pretty odd that they're just rolling with the hugely criticized "mobile" games as their answer to people wanting to play these classics on modern hardware.

Most of the Xenogears team is over at Monolith now. If they were to make a new Xenogears, it would be in name only. Xenoblade is the successor to that series. Parasite Eve got its shot ten years ago. It wasn't great (Aya is still hot though).

Chrono is a tough one. Masato Kato is a hack and needs to be kept on a leash. Chrono Trigger was good because of Yuji Horii and Sakaguchi. Horii is easy enough to work with, but getting Sakaguchi back would be tough.

This game got a lot of shit when it was released, but somehow I never played it. Always wondered if it was actually bad, or just bad compared to the rest of Square's PSX output, which is honestly an unfair and unreasonable measuring stick.

Will definitely pick this up at a good price.

Been meaning to buy another ps1 copy since Square refused to release the game digitally so this works just fine for me.

What a good way to start the month. This gets announced and pretty soon you have the SaGa Collection out on the 15th. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light on the 4th.

It's a weird messy game, like a lot of the SaGa series. But it feels fresh and fun and cool. It's worth checking out. I adore it. But don't expect too much polish lol

All you need is the right persons for the right job, not necessarily the original creators but people with talent who understand where they were coming from and their goals, just like the SaGa classics' return is largely thanks to one huge SaGa fan in Squenix who basically did it all by himself.
We'll still be getting good games after the old guard retires (or worse) and as you said the works of the original creators who moved on to other projects haven't really tried to be exactly like their oldies were anyway, evolution and change would occur whether with them or with new people.

Besides, all the SaGa games themselves can be very different to each other anyway, not just the different sub series like Frontier vs Romancing vs whatever either, even SaGa Frontier 2 doesn't really resemble this game in any real ways beyond the name actually, they're just weird like that.

Chrono Trigger was good because of Akira Toriyama and Yasunori Mitsuda/Nobuo Uematsu. Toriyama was the artist for Dragon Ball which CT was heavily inspired on, and Dragon Quest which Yuji was in charge of, yet none of the DQ compare because of the music. Without Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu tracks to go along with Akira Toriyama art, the game would've been shit, see Chrono Cross, great soundtrack, but the art/gameplay/story doesn't compare. Yoshinori Kitase can easily take Sakaguchi role, so that's a moot point.

Theres so much wrong in this post its baffeling. It even ends with the biggest (and worst) hot take as well.

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Never played the Saga games except Final Fantasy Legends on the original Gameboy.

I never played a Mana game either besides Final Fantasy Adventure until this year when I got a Switch and Trials of Mana remake. Loving Trials of Mana.

Kitase is a fucking fraud. He is one of the reasons FF sucks now.

Also, insinuating that Dragon Quests have bad music. Fucking lulz.
