Worst console launch in History.

This, obviously due to various factors, including Covid-19, has been the worst console launch in history. I am not talking about the capabilities of the consoles or how amazing their titles are, but mainly due to factors that have to do with stock, distribution and logistics, it is a generation that must have been delayed a few months. Frustration is high, in Latin America the units are very limited, but not in the sense that Jim Ryan mentioned, in which he gives responsibility to the demand, which is certainly high, no, the available units are VERY limited, in a Sony's official store, in Latin America, the units available for the launch day were ..... 20.
How is it in your countries?
I insist, probably most users are not gonna like it but....due to covid, and to ensure stock in stores or to online sales....this gen should have been delayed a few months

The same thing is happening in Japan, if we take a look at the weekly sales on Japanese market before the releases of PS5, we could easily conclude that PS4 is no longer a priority in Japan for Sony as the sales has been drastically lower than anything before and just logically assumed Sony had freed the PS4 production channels and replace it with PS5 in order to prepare a bigger shipments size for Japan but in the end the result speaks for itself.

Either Sony is struggling with the production of PS5 which had been denied by Sony itself or the allocation size is significantly bigger in the US and UK that forces Sony to cut down the other markets shipment sizes.

It has been one of the best console launch for PS5... at least better than PS4 and PS3.

- Great impressions
- Great games
- Great word of mouth
- Great performance

Seems like everything did right with Sony and PS5.

The allocation seems way higher than previous consoles it just the demand is way way higher.

It's like people never experience a console launch before. PS3 had worse launch titles and was ridiculously expensive plus the unprecedented amount of failures of first revision 360s. The entire first year of the PS2 in NA had some very sparse releases. I could go on (I'm old), but neither the PS5 or the XSX are the worst.

Safe to say PS5 have it worst of all the Playstation release. The issue to me is not the lack of the unit but the reasons to buy one.

60fps bumps to a crap load of PS4 games is enough to justify upgrading early on. Its transformative experience to play amazing games like Ghost of Tsushima in locked 60fps.

And if you had a PS4 Pro you could have easily sold it a couple months back for $300. I was able to sell mine for $399 because of stock issues, so PS5 was only a $100 upgrade for me. $100 upgrade is a no brainer, even a $200 upgrade is a no brainer.

Are you sure? Because in Japan they only sold around 100K PS5s. PS4 had more than 200K sold units back then.

if the allocation is way higher than previous consoles, then the demand is way way lower.

My friend who is a Nintendo fanboy who hates Sony is betting than Switch outsells the ps5 in Japan in week 2.

He was laughing his ass off at the poor sales figure of the ps5.
Your friend is better than sales analyst Micheal Pachter when it comes to sales prediction.

Meanwhile, I'm just playing my PS5 having a great time with basically no issues and more games than I have time for at present. This is Waaay better than the N64 launch where we were stuck with what? Two games for months. Not two exclusives.... two total games.

You're technically right, despite the supply constrained problem, the software sales are abysmal that indicates the actual customers who had bought the system are mostly resellers and scalpers instead of actual customers who wanted to play that hardware.

Spiderman MM - 18K
Demon's Souls Remake - 18K
COD PS5 - 6K
Godfall - 5K
AC PS5 - 4K
DMC V PS5 - sub 2K
Sack Boy - sub 2K

In terms of availability, I remember PS2 being worse. The 500K initial shipment sold out on day 1 and then it took 2-3 months for any additional units to be made available. I remember a friend of mine tried to get one at launch, couldn't, and kept calling many places around town and it took 5 months (March 2001) to get one.

There were 0 unit allocated to Japan at launch for PS4... Japan only received units three months later..

Sony will probably have record sales for a launch quarter.

Do you have digital data? You will only compare software with the financial quarter when Sony shows the numbers.

PS5
Demon's Souls
Sackboy
Godfall
Spider-Man

Xbox

There's a "mysterious" third option in case some people didn't realize i.e. don't buy a next gen console... yet.

Demon's Souls is the only one on that list worth playing. Sackboy? Not my type of game. Godfall? Based on reviews, it's shit. Spider-Man is for people who like Spider-man. I'm not one of them.

7 years ago I picked up a launch ps4 because I liked the Killzone franchise. Meanwhile in 2020 I just don't see the same sort of "go buy one now!" reason. And no, that doesn't mean Xbox is better right now.

Seems like Spider-man is too niche 🤔

For a bad launch I'm gaming like crazy. Love both of my consoles but they definitely would have had a better launch next year. They couldn't foresee the pandemic, DLSS, etc

Xbox Series X/S.
No first party exclusives at launch. Compare that with X360 and XB1, who had excellent and decent launch exclusives.

There is no 1:1 comparison because Japan either launched first and alone like on PS1, 2 and 3 or later like on PS4.

This is the most "global" launch of either hardware manufacturer. Therefore the units are spread thinner across more markets

I see consoles differently now. With improved BC games and being able to play all last gen games, they are closer to PC upgrades. You can enjoy your backlog with enhancements, way quicker loading, better controllers, quieter consoles, etc. They even resemble PCs in size. :D

I feel bad for those who want one. They didn't give me any compelling reasons to make the investment so I've held off, for numerous reasons. Hopefully stock will catch up for those looking to buy one.

People take so much joy in exclusivity. Does the fact that only your machine can play a certain title really sweeten the pot by that much?

Seems odd to me, is all.

WIthout exclusives, a console would have no identity. If the Switch didn't have Nintendo's games, I wouldn't have touched it. If Sony didn't have the strong lineup they did with the PS4, I would just abandon my attempts to get a PS5. Plus you have the fact that exclusive take much better advantage of console hardware than multiplatform titles do.

Well we are in a pandemic, so games that was probably gonna launch in the Xbox/ps5 got delayed. I’m sure it took a few weeks to at least get really setup, an still it’s not the same as working in an office. I expect delays for any game no released yet at this point.

My friend who is a Nintendo fanboy who hates Sony also hates Michael Pachter. He says that Pachter always criticises Nintendo. All the Nintendo fans in my chat group also hate Pachter.

Is it a common thing for Nintendo fans to hate Pachter?

I find him pretty neutral. He criticises Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo equally.
