Have there been games that failed due to the developers being too ambitious for their own good?

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Not a failure, but Dragon's Dogma sure was too much of an ambition, almost like a dream game.

The final result was really cool tho, specially with it's DLC.

It's director seems to have finished with DMC V so... A man can dream. :^)

Project Cars?
Started as a Sim and receveid a lot of feedback in the development time. Was planned to be a racing game for car fans, but I think they never met their targets and for me, the game wasnt fun etc.
PC2 was IMO just an update and with PC3 they completly lost their original vision.

And I say that as someone who really enjoyed it. I can admit it's way too fucking ambitious though

individually loading single bullets and hunting for car parts like spark plugs that you can barely see in game
most people don't find enjoyment in playing games like that

can you explain why you thought it was too ambitious? everyone I know who played it longer than 2 hours loved it, what a great game

The original vision for the game was much bigger in size and content.

In the final game we only got like 1/4 of that, and no Moon, which was planned as a late game scenario.

There where also going to be more races, even for the pawns, and the Everfall was supossed to an endless tower shared by all players.

Gothic 3.

A sequel to one of the most popular RPGs in central/eastern Europe. They had high aspirations for a huge world, but they bit off way more than they could handle. And ended up with an open world RPG that had a huge, but fairly lifeless, boring world without any meaningful story at all, and bugs so plentiful and huge that even Starship Troopers wouldn't have been able to eradicate those.
You underestimate the Mobile Infantry, but it is true that Gothic 3's bug ridden state is legendary. I myself, being a HUGE fan of the second game (played through it 10+ times), was very much looking forward to Gothic 3. It wasn't terrible by itself, the graphics were amazing, as well as the music and combat was pretty fun but the massive amount of bugs resulted in me being unable to finish the game 3 times. Two times I started over in hopes of beating the game but I would always hit a massive glitch that would prevent me from completing a story quest and the worst part was that the chain of events that led to me getting stuck started hours earlier, long before my backup saves. I never did finish it, but I did enjoy Risen a few years later.

Sounds exactly how I went for me. But I also have to add that I didn't like how they had designed the quests in that game. It was just not what I expected and wanted.
Enjoyed Risen 1 though, Risen 2 was yet a failure for me again, didn't bother with Risen 3. But played and enjoyed Elex.

I'll try Elex one day, thanks for the unintentional recommendation.

The two specific games of his that come to mind are Wonderful 101 and God Hand. The latter allowed you to mix and match hundreds of different moves and I think that ALONE made it too overwhelming. Players were expected to learn the ins and outs of the system and to apply that knowledge to their choices. W101 is infamous for Kamiya saying that the "first playthrough is a tutorial", which is true since you aren't likely to unlock most/all of the moves within the first play.

I think both of these games shine when someone gives them a chance, but otherwise they are too impenetrable for the avg action game button-mashing player.

Well to go old school "Alternate Reality" on the old 8-bit computers. Way too ambitious, they only got 2 of the games out and they didn't even integrate with each other.

Yeah Metal Gear 5, I don't give a $*** about free-roam, I'd rather have a deep immersive story/setting, instead of a barren waste-land of Afghanistan to roam around...
I mean the game was forced to be released... I'm sure Kojima had other stuff in mind.

Too Human was one of the games that tried to do much but it failed to deliver

Sin Episodes - An ambitious idea to have the game world be shaped based on the majority action of players, but Ritual was banking on sales from EP1 fueling the series and it died.

CitiesXL - Online Sim City before that became a thing but with a mandatory subscription to play online.

No Man's Sky comes to mind.

The fact that they've release like 3 major updates and a substantial amount of smaller ones for free over the last 3 years or so kinda goes counter to this. It started as a failure but actually cocooned into a beautiful butterfly. They've made their money back many times over and have released tons of free substantial content in that time.

The first thing that popped into my head.

Other than that mobile game, I don't think he's put out a financial failure at all. He's definitely ambitious and spouts bullshit, but his games are all successful by just about every metric.

His games are not bad, just end up a fraction of what is promised.
Personally I loved the Movies, I'd love to see him tackle the idea again with modern technology and expand the creation experience.

Duke Nukem Forever. There was a 3d Realms forum and people would suggest insane features that escalated out of control. "You should be able to use the urinals" became "You should be able to piss on ANYTHING!" And the devs were always like, "It's already partially implemented. You can piss in vehicles too." And that just went on for 2 decades.

WTF!? How can Halo Infinite already be considered a fail if it isn't even released yet? (and I am pretty sure most of Xbox owners will want to play it)
Considering that they've ultimately pushed the release back until the following year, i think it's fair to say that failed to meet their own firm targets.
