Microsoft’s Bethesda deal is a $7.5 billion part of its plan to crush Sony (and keeping employees)

Microsoft is clearly positioning itself to become an even greater player in the gaming industry than it already is, and with the ZeniMax acquisition under its belt, a low-priced Xbox on the way, and Game Pass’s incredible value, Sony should be watching its back.

Even greater player in the industry than it already is?

Behind Sony and Nintendo, but just ahead of Stadia and the new Intellivision?

Ehh they always say they will keep everything as is fir at least a year. That’s right out out of “ corporate take over 101” let’s see if any co start leaving a year from now.

Unless MS is going to start making movies, electronics, lenses & sensors, appliances, selling insurance, etc, I don't see how they are going to crush "Sony".
None of those other than Insurance make anything more than chump change. Playstation is their main bread winner now. This move absolutely damages playstation. How much we're yet to find out.

I'll be honest, I didn't expect them to keep all 2300 employees/ or respect thier management structure. I thought a few devs shat their pants when they got this news, so this is even better

It's a great acquisition, people have been saying MS will crush Sony for generations. Sony will still come out on top this gen,I'm sure MS will be closer this gen though.

Will come close because of some potential good games that will come out years from now?

"Xbox has no games" mantra is dead as of today. 23 Fricken studios! Half are AAA. Insane

They can only change the narrative once the promised good games arrive. You're counting the chicks before they're hatched. It's not like Bethesda has not messed up their games recently.

Obviously they wont "crush" Sony, and more than likely PS easily wins next gen again. That being said this was a MASSIVE move for Microsoft

Nice article, especially with saying all employees kept.

Some key snippets below:

Importantly, Microsoft says it will keep ZeniMax’s 2,300 employees and leadership structure in place. That gives hope that Microsoft will allow ZeniMax’s development studios and publishing houses to continue to operate as they have in the past, ensuring they are able to create and push out the kind of content that has won over so many gamers in the firm’s roughly 34-year history.

Microsoft isn’t banking on its consoles being its only money makers, though. The company is also offering its Xbox Game Pass service for $9.99 per month on PC or consoles and $15.99 for Game Pass Ultimate, which works on both PC and consoles and gives users access to the company’s xCloud game streaming service.

Game Pass is easily the best deal in gaming, giving subscribers access to more than 100 games that can be downloaded, or streamed via your Android smartphone or tablet or console. But importantly, Microsoft makes games from its developers and publishers available via Game Pass the same day they go on sale in stores and online, something Microsoft made sure to point out about ZeniMax’s upcoming titles.

Microsoft is clearly positioning itself to become an even greater player in the gaming industry than it already is, and with the ZeniMax acquisition under its belt, a low-priced Xbox on the way, and Game Pass’s incredible value, Sony should be watching its back.

Is it just me, or does this read like a really blatant piece of "sponsored content" ? I mean the verbiage is straight out of their marketing speak!
I mean, its factually correct, but its hardly sober, balanced reportage, especially for a supposed finance (?) site.

Sony have brand and popularity build up since 90's on 4 gens consoles and decades before that from electronics.

Crushing Sony is a joke, first try to gain even same level of popularity as Playstation. And 1 gen wont do it

They are clearly doing it wrong as it kind of works in USA but not on other areas, because different culture and "USA style marketing" looks just silly to many.

This "gamepass is incredible value" starts to get old. And that is the usa style that annoys many.

No, it is not incredible, it is spamming money in desperation to upkeep non-feasible service hoping enough people fall for it and then price starts to climb, or game quality drops.

If it's too good to be true..

Same happened with netflix, american company promised tons of movies&series, then price have almost doubled here over the years and half the stuff have been removed because of other services. So too often they dont have stuff we want to watch

Same as "steam sales are incredible value, I buy 500 games because they are cheap, and never play them. But hey,. INCREDIBLE VALUE!!"

I talked about this with big group of gamer friends and all kind of think that gamepass is just waste of money / attempt to lure people into xbox ecosystem and then fuck them up somehow. Bribing people in is just not trustworthy.

Ultimate for 155,88€ (183$) year it is easy to get 6-15 games from sales/used, even launch games few weeks after the launch.

Whom really plays/needs hundreds of games? Not many. Collecting is a different thing
I agree their marketing is very 'Americaney', it's always been that way. Even some of slogans like 'Jump in to the Xbox family' I find really cringey.

Sony has always had a much cooler image in Europe, going back to Wipeout in the Playstation 1 days, and the way it advertised gaming as something beyond a pastime for kids.

The Xbox brand just doesn't have much traction here, though I do think the GamePass push is pushing Sony to develop its games faster and to come up with new IPs and exclusive content for third-party games etc.

Well, the deal made me hold off on pre ordering the PS5. I'm now going to wait until Q1 2021 to see what both consoles have lined up.

PlayStation is a global brand, Xbox is and will always be a regional one.

90% of people in Europe would never buy an Xbox, same in Asia and Middle East.

GamePass could win back North America and that would be bad for Sony but it will be one portion of one region, playing on it's own.

PlayStation surrounded Xbox and that is how you crush.... you don't crush from the inside out.

this is the game changer move that ms need. Content/ games matter. Exclusive matter. They surely struggled to build their own first party game and this is bold move to 'solve the problem' but it depend on how they utilize this. I see this is actually good asset for their gamepass content. I expect this move taken with gamepass future exclusive content in mind. MS claim to not bother to xbox sales but gamepass subscribetion instead. Ofcourse, it depend on how they steer their big ship now.

if they intend to take this into their own field, create their own market while not necessary directly compete with sony using their gamepass model, this will be interesting too see.
but if they intend to dance on same field on sony, suddenly embrace the 'exclusivity' for the console, this also will be interesting direct showdown with Sony.

But i doubt this would guarantee anything for MS. Dont expect it to be that easy. Sony portfolio still very strong. Not to mention Nintendo. This is not about 'instant win' or anything.

I dont expect any of the 3 company will take out each other just like that. This will bring fierce competition in industry. Sony vs MS while Nintendo continue to be the presence at middle of that. Before it Sony has huge lead but now MS got boost in performance. Now Sony cant keep act ' too comfortable' which is a good things. MS also should not act like their future is secured just because they acquired zenimax. This competition will benefit industry and gamers.

So next gen is interesting too see. I hope this competition will bring out great game for us.

Thinks are getting heated, if only for PR sakes, Sony should make some announcements before or at launch to generate hype...maybe :pie_thinking:

PlayStation as a brand will never go away no matter what MS buys to try and eradicate it. If Sony ever gets out of the game they will sell it off to someone like Amazon and then MS will have all kinds of problems. MS is lucky they have money to burn bcs without it they'd be DOA and God help them if PlayStation ever gets the same financial backing Xbox does.

why would they want to crush sony? they need a healthy competition to thrive.

Healthy competition with MS and its gargantuan resources in the race? Do people realize how much more money MS has over the other two players? This is what fascinates me in these talks: People still painting MS as the underdog, when the disparity between them and Sony -Or Nintendo- when it comes to their respective financial means makes this battle a lost cause for the latter in the long term: It does not matter that their studios are better, or that their management approach is superior...MS can simply open their wallet and pick up third party partners left and right.

I wish this would have been announced AFTER pre-orders, now I will have to get to Gamestop an hour early just in case. :p

They HAVE to keep Zenimax. There's a reason they bought the publisher instead of separate studios.

It'll operate like a vassal state. Makes sense.

money helps but it's not everything, xbox has objectively had lesser quality exclusive games than playstation in the last 3 gens regardless of how much money they had.

Last reply: This is not Xbox Division vs Playstation. This is MS vs Sony...And Sony are considerably smaller and less flexible. No dig at the Japanese manufacturer, but MS has obviously started an attrition war, and none should expect the tinier company to be able to withstand the pressure.

I'm with you. This is leverage to get Game Pass on Playstation. I don't see Sony ever allowing it though.
I really doubt they would put GP on Playstation. Sure they want that monthly fee but they also want to sell you games like Call of Duty and Fifa as well.

"Other consoles on a case by case basis" aka occasionally like Ori on switch.

my last reply too, you make some valid points, sony had it easy this gen and it's not going to be a cake_walk as it was before, this coming gen. the games are what matters in the end and we shall see which company is going to have the better output.

I think Sony still wins this gen but Microsoft puts real pressure on them and gains ground on them for the next gen. If they make some good exclusives this gen it might be reasonable for ps5 owners to get the series S and gamepass toward the end of the gen

I'm always worrying about keeping talent with long tenured, hopefully it stays this way.

The besf part of this deal is that they can do some games in these huge franchises if they wanted to with spin offs or something if they don't plan on making the mainline games exclusive. Not only that, but XGS can do whatever Bethesda property they want and we all want FNV2.

They should merge with Apple. Then we would see....
