Xbox Series S Won’t Apply Xbox One X Enhancements, Microsoft Confirms

I'm sure most games outside of AAA games can run at 1440p and 60 fps.
Not a chance. Microsoft Flight Simulator, the only next gen game available, only runs at 1080p30 on medium settings on 5500XT (Series S equivalent GPU). This is a 1080p60 box at best and likely 1080p30 once games become more demanding. 1440p60 is a pipe dream for anything other than cross-gen, indie and eSports titles.

Not really shocking. The Series S is the direct replacement to the Xbox One S.

It's a cheap box meant to be 1080p and 1440p. The Xbox One X had a serious GPU in it for a console.

The main concern I see with the system is the ram, not the other thousand threads that have popped up. This system very well may have 720p titles as a compromise when the generation takes off. Who knows, I guess we shall see.

For the price there is a lot of percieved value, at least with the people at work that I have spoke with.

A 4TF RDNA 2.0 GPU is more "serious" than a 6TF GCN GPU dealing with severe CPU bottlenecks. Again, less capable hardware has been providing improvements to 1080p users in the form of super sampling and improved anti aliasing techniques for years. No reason a "next gen" machine can't do the same with the exact same games.

No it won't be able to play Scorn, The Medium, or Stalker 2. Having a better significantly better Cpu means something.

But I can't play those games on the XBox Series S either, can I?
So I can keep my One X, be happy and maybe think about getting an XSX. But why should I buy the XSS if I can get the One X?

This generation is going to be a shit show in terms of next gen quality games. Well atleast for multiplat games.

But here is the million dollar question going forward and keeping an Xbox one X - will there actually be Xbox one X enhanced versions of new games? Support may dry up for this machine. (which would be lame)
I would say sell the X now while it's still worth a decent amount, and it will pay for a good chunk of your Series X.

Doesn't seem like that much of an issue. Many GaaS titles will likely get updated versions that support Series S directly. Backwards compatibility will be a bit blurry but that seems fine for the budget box. The problem isn't that the Series S isn't a capable machine, it's more that the original Xbox One was so half-assed.

What's the beef, salty PlayStation lads?

The Series S still plays BC games better than they were on the xbox one, and will also play all new games MUCH better than them, including the One X (and will continue to play new games long after the xbox one is no longer supported).

You need to stop getting your frilly panties in a twist over a console you have no interest in buying.

I dont think will be a big deal for the average consumer but it surely is a marketing problem mainly for the expectations that the fans had, I think MS designed the system to be too cheap(for them) for its own good

Oh ya, right....games are going to be horrible. I mean they already looked horrible on the gimped CPU and 6 TF of the Xbox one X, so with the SSD, advanced architecture of the series X, extra ram, and 12TF of power, you know, about 3 times the overall power, they will all look like crap. :messenger_confused:

He knows that people are just straight up trolling now out anger. How dare Microsoft have a good news cycle and not clone Sony.

I hate people like you.
I have every MS console at home and want to have an honest discussion without being called a troll or fanboy.
Why I thought "The Medium" wouldn't run on the XSS? Because the developer released a long statement saying this game can only be realised on the XBox Series X.

Now I know better. Thanks to people who take some time to talk normally with me. In a nice way.
Unlike you.

Grow up and learn to have a calm and honest discussion.
You know what's just as bad as trolls and fanboys? Overacting fans who act like dramatic console defenders who don't even care to bring any points and jump to denounce other people right away.

But I was told here that memory size doesn't matter because the XSS would magically rescale texture sizes to fit less ram and play the games with X1X improvements and supersample them down to 1080p!
GAF lied to me!

If I’m looking to spend around $300 for an Xbox console, I would potentially consider trying to track down a xbone X instead of the series S. Or just wait till the Series X drops in price.
Releasing a new console which is less capable than its predecessor (in even a small way) could be seen as. Backwards step.

Why wouldn’t Microsoft just consider keeping the One X as an option then?
Answer is to rebrand and market a new box. Makes me feel cheated as a consumer.

Well I certainly can't argue with how their move makes you feel. I just personally think for the direction they chose to go with this split console setup with strong backwards compatibility and cross-generational support, they sorta did the best they could. An S version gets you S features. An X version gets you X features. S is low end, X is high end. It's not too dissimilar from how Intel has historically done i3, i5 and i7 classifications. Or BMW with 3 series, 5 series, 7 series etc.

Nope. Digital Foundry specifically said that the reason it can't do enhancement for BC is because it doesn't have enough ram and bandwidth. And more Ram would have definitely helped with next gen titles as many devs already mentioned.

If they wanted they could easily run any Xbox One game at 4K just by the benefits of the new better performing architecture, the Velocity Architecture and the SSD. But that would mean doing extra work for something barely nobody cares.

And the point is; they don't want to and they don't need to. If you want to play at 4K, there's a console called Series X. Following the distinction between the two consoles it's important.

True, maybe it's rooted in the possible third party development hindrances? Maybe.

But that's the wishful thinking part. Sony fanboys are SALIVATING for the Series S to be a hindrance of multiplatform games so they can come and critizice the console. They just want ammo, just like how they are all in this thread acting all crazy about something that hardly much people care about in the first place.

But don't worry, the devs lazy and cheap enough to not program to the Series X first are devs that weren't going to do a technical impressive game anyways.

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. I, and I think many others figured the 4K limitations they were talking about was more in regards to next gen games designed from the ground up, not current gen games enhanced for XBX1. The fuck, if this thing will run into issues running enhanced games on a current gen system then clearly it will pose issues for years to come. At the very least your current gen system, no matter the power, should be able to handle games designed or enhanced for your previous gen console.

“Xbox Series S was designed to be the most affordable next generation console and play next generation games at 1440P at 60fps. To deliver the highest quality backwards compatible experience consistent with the developer’s original intent, the Xbox Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward compatible games while applying improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR.”

More in the article here
I'm gonna hold them to this, 'cause that won't happen.

I feel that keeping the One X would have create more confusion.
try to explain to
A customer lambda that one is a little more modern but run game at lower resolution and the other one is running game at higher resolution but it’s from previous generation.

The ppl buying the S won't really care.

Serious Question: I thought the Series S was more powerful than the One X? I thought those 4TF are very different than the 6TF in the One X. If it has a better GPU and a MUCH better CPU, shouldn't it be able to run games like the One X? I'm a bit confused.

Are you gonna hold the PS5 for when they will not run games at 4K/60fps?

I mean, they can't even run the UE5 demo at that level already.

I have always wondered what you do in real life when you are talking to someone and suddenly you discover that you can't hide behind a gif when you don't have anything meaningful to say.

Yes I agree, they didn't want to do it. It's a bad decision though imo as it would have given BC enhancement and would made sure devs have more headroom when it comes to next gen games. I think they were trying very hard to hit that $299 price and are probably still losing money on it, but I just fail to see how adding $20 on top would have changed much, plus it would have made things easier for devs.

They were probably scared of Sony pricing their digital console at $399 and needed there to be at least $100 difference. Remember, the original leak (that got almost everything right) had Series S at 12GB Ram, but it seems like they changed it to target $299.

Are these enhancements for XBOX One games? If so I dont think it'll matter to the masses. The masses isn't going to buy a series X or S to play One games. Just like backwards compatibility doesn't really matter in the long run. The masses isn't going to buy these new systems to play old games.

If they blatantly advertise as all next-gen games will be 4k/60, ofc I will...
But I haven't read anything yet in that regards.

The CPU is holding the XB1X back. When you look at The Medium's Steam page they recommend a Ryzen 3700x. Comparing the 1X's CPU to that is an ant vs an elephant. The 1X reminds me of my old PC build when I had a GTX 1080 paired with a AMD FX-8350. I was bottlenecking the crap out of that GPU and leaving a ton of performance on the table.

He tells himself that obviously game devs will target the specs in the lowest likely install base, spend tons of money trying to downgrade things to weaker tech that sells far more units, wraps his arms tightly around himself, and enjoys the love.

the enhancements mentioned are what they are applied in Xbox one X not about running Xbox one games in 4K, the problem is the extra textures and resolution use more ram than what is in the system also the bandwidth is less in SeS

Yeah, you really helped me understand that.
I knew the One X couldn't possibly play a game like "The Medium", but I thought the same to be true for the XSS, because the developer held the XSX so high and deemed it the only console being able to actually play the game as intended.

Wait so all the footage of The Medium is Series S? Cool, I thought it was Series X. Where did it say it was S if you don't mind me asking?

I think he's talking of a video MS released a few days ago highlighting the XSS. "The Medium" was shown there as well.
The footage before that was XSX, or at least hardware that simulates the power of the console.

But I think this is kind true.
They can achive that, the games just needs to be downgraded as much as possible to make it run with 1440p@60FSP.
Maybe the games will look ugly or like last-gen games but with 1440p@60FPS.
I mean look at Halo Infinite it's 4k@60FPS! What else you need ? This is next-gen baby.

godhandiscen

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
So the resolution stays at 900p for past gen games? Lame.

Is the Xbox One X that much more powerful than the Series S?

Not unexpected. In some ways the Series S is less powerful than the One X.

Which is why many of us are concerned about games being chained to what basically is a current-gen consoke for all of next generation.

You get what you pay for I guess.

Unless you buy an X and games are held back in any way to account for the S. Then, you get what others paid for.

During the series s official video with jason Ronald they showed a clip of a few games running on series s including medium. I know those technical masters blooper could do it maybe they can help some other bellyachers lol.

It won't have enough vram for a higher resolution framebuffer but the CPU should smooth out CPU related performances as should the improved GPU and of course the SSD should drastically improve load times. Not the worst compromise really at the end of the day.
8GB works fine on the 2080 and 2080S and the 3070 being at the 2080Ti performance level also only has an 8GB frame buffer.

The hardware could do it but if games were designed and expect to have 9GB of assets in Ram and don't it could cause stutter as that data is fetched from the SSD but without the fancy velocity stuff since no Xbox One game would have been built with that API.

but I just fail to see how adding $20 on top would have changed much

In the large scale economy, $20 dollars can mean you are losing dozens of millions.

plus it would have made things easier for devs

For what? For making Xbox One X enhanced games 1:1 on the Series S? Nobody cares.

And 2GB more of Ram wouldn't change that much for the intended target resolution of the Series S.

If anything, is the bandwith the one who looks too low, but I'm sure the people creating the console thought of that and it's going to be enough.

Oh, now we're going to get all personal like an internet tough guy.

Keep at it, champ!

Personal?

I'm just pointing out how you mask your lack of argumentation with gifs all the time (to make fun of people's opinions, yet somehow I'm the one making it personal!). That's nothing personal neither tough, it's just an observation based on what you just did right now.

Xss deal gets worse by the minute it seems.damn

Imagine playing many x1 games in 900p in 2020 😬😬😬
Dumb post.

Games will not be 4k as system designed for 1440p games. So they will run at 1440p on S but not 4k.

BC games on One X runs at 4k resolution as GPU had bandwidth keeping 4k resolution in mind. X played those games at 4k 30 fps with longer load times. Series S by default should run them at higher fps thanks to Ryzen 2 and faster load thanks to SSD, but without 4k resolution. So you not getting 4k resolution of One X but everything else you will get. So target audience of S will not mind it as they dont have 4k tv to experience 4k graphics anyway. If you care about 4k bc games then Series X you need.
