That's not the point.

The point is PC game makers have no problem scaling games to a million configs, yet can still churn out a game that looks better than any console version.

So the whole "holding it back" is BS.
You're moving the goal post. Because the standard back in 2014 is not the same as it is now. Yet, the consoles remain the same. Weird shit, right? How is this sorcery possible?

Consoles are able to punch above their weight in a way PC can't. Not because devs are "lazy" but because the tools used to a dedicated hardware in mind get better. You can't develop to only AMD cards on PC, that's insane.

Also, If we use the 2014 available hardware today, consoles would mop the floor performance wise.

The whole point is, devs are limited from the get go by the slower hardware and not by 2 years like it was previously, but by an entire generation.

Remember when Sony pissed DEVs off with the PS3? They MOVED to the X360. Easier to develop, no BS, and port it to PS3 (horrible ports left and right).

Can you guess what will happen next gen?

id has roots in PC game making for 30 years. And their game engines always run well on any console or PC spec.

Don't see the problem.

If they think Series S is underpowered compared to latest tech, then don't make games for it, Xbox One, PS4 or any PC rig that is more than 5 years old.
I believe the initial rumours that detailed the Series S, known as Lockhart back then, explained how Microsoft is locking Developers into both. Everything that runs on the Series X, must run on the Series S. So, that's not an option.

For sure.

But for any dev complaining, that;'s the way software development works. You got a ton of different platforms from top end PC rigs down to crappier rigs, modern consoles and last gen consoles, and maybe even dumb down to a mobile version (if there is one).

If any dev doesn't like making games for multiplat sales, then just stick to a high spec PC rigs, PS5 and SeX. That way you got 3 versions that will be pretty close to each other.

And you can skip all the older and less powerful PCs and consoles and tablet/mobile versions.
Does Microsoft allow publishing XsX version without an XsS? Seems unlikely

They are 4k60 for current-gen games with a couple of improvements here and there, but for next-gen games that 4k60 can translate to 1800p60 or something like that, it won't be 4k for the rest of the generation especially once we put the CPU on its knees and start using the GPU for other tasks more and more...
Precisely, the focus will shift to deploying rendering power into the scene - not so much the resolution. High rez, 120fps is just a bridge for current gen games due the extra power on the table. Same as what happens on PC with high end cards.

However, XsS kind of knocks that on the head, potentially turning the high end to just a scaling machine for nextgen. Just like pc ‘scalability’

PS5 and SeX are as good as a PC with RTX 3070?

In straight gpu performance they are more like 3060. Which still place them under only 5 cards on market.
And consoles will over perform their specs. If you want a PC that can outperform the consoles, you'll need a RTX 3070 and a 8 core Zen 2 CPU @ over 3.8 GHz.

Next gen console games will be designed to run at 30 Hz on 8 Zen 2 cores at around 3.5 GHz.

If a PC gamer wants to run that game at 60 Hz, they will obviously need a lot more CPU power. Plus a cutting edge GPU.

Most PC gamers don't have that.

Ah Mr. 128 gigs of ram.

The whole computer spec doubling every so often hasn't been relevant in decades since new tech enables companies to reduce the amount, but still churn out higher performing chips.

I remember Pentium 4 cpus that could run around 4 ghz. I think that was around 15 years ago. If that held true, we'd have cpus running at probably 50 ghz by now.

And why is PC excluded?

A good PC rig is still going to beat SeX and PS5, yet a typical high budget game on PC can probably still run on a 5 year old PC with video cards AMD and Nvidia don't even sell anymore.

So a PC with a million configs that need to be supported seems to be no problem for a game maker, yet for consoles Series S or a couple mid gen models is a crushingly hard task?

PS4 Pro and Xbox X had boosted res, better frames, enhanced visuals and even did some BC enhancements. Didn't seem like a problem to me.

I've asked this question every time someone says this. Do you honestly think PC games wouldn't be better if devs were able to target only hardware released in the last 2 years. If devs didn't have to account for 5-7 year old cpus and gpus then PCMR games would be blowing everything on console out of the water. Instead PC is bested nearly every time Sony 1st party devs release a game on a console with a tenth the power.

TheGreatWhiteShark TheGreatWhiteShark Do you want to call out this dev too? Or we are clear here?
If you ask me again, I will answer the same:
it is a very shallow train of thought -at best case scenario- that leads people making such comments.
if a console manufacturer broadens up the nextgen customer base, that is also broadening up the business (and the proceeds) of those that are whining now. they have to work for it though, that's the "caveat".
I don't know in which part of the earth you live, but as a general rule most people finances are under uncertainty since some months because of the pandemic.
Try to imagine that sony came out and told you "Hey, you know what? because some of us are going through insecure or difficult times, I have also a scaled down version of Playstation 5, with which you can play all the same new games, but at a lower resolution. So here, take this option under consideration too if you like"
Would your response be the same?
Don't even answer. I know the answer, everybody does.

Now
I don't think that quoting developers for console war ammunition is mature,
but anyway, since you called me for that reason specifically, here are some things I saw earlier,
and clearly, 100% prefer their way of thinking:

So,
are we good, or do I need write more?

If I were to guess on this I would say that Microsoft is probably not giving developers the option. If they want the Xbox Series S to be extremely successful it needs to play the same games that the XSX plays.

WTF is happening to this man?

“The message we wanted to send with Xbox All Access is that we will stop at nothing to get every single human being on Earth to sign up for Game Pass. We heard some people might not do it because they prefer the PS5, so we decided to just buy them one,” said Phil Spencer, VP of Gaming at Microsoft. “Will you sign up for Game Pass now? We want it so bad.”

EDIT: It's a joke.

PS3 had 512 MB of RAM.
PS4 had 16x that.
PS5 at 16x 8 would be 128 GB.

Impossible, but 32 GB would be the stretch goal.
Console ram trends don't mean much at all since old consoles always had tiny amounts of ram compared to PCs. As soon as they became more like PCs, they jumped in ram playing catch up so the multiple looked high for many gens.

Perhaps.

But they never do that. They always support old ass PC specs and I've never seen a PC game maker complain once.

So for any studio making console games, having another weaker console to make shouldn't be an issue, especially when their studio can somehow do it for a million configs, as well as make ports for Switch or even last gen games for another 3 years which are clearly outclassed as outdated from 2013.

If any game maker truly wants to focus on modern tech, as you said, then make a game with a narrow band of high end min PC specs and just do a PS5 and SeX version. That's it. The workers can focus on not gimping the game, and by cutting out the million downports and configs, it'll probably cut dev time and Q&A testing.

are you for real? you read some comedy article and you present it like Phil Spencer actually said that? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This one?

Ive heard that xbox fanboys are agressive but...

I agree that he shouldn't have said that but you also snapped at him. Honestly both of you are part of the problem. You should settle it in a DM in my opinion because continuing this isn't going to get you two anywhere positive.

Having a bunch of mouth foaming console warrior fanatics up your ass is a valid reason to say "stupid fanboy fights - go get some fresh air, nerds."
IMO he is right, especially about the "stupid" part, as stupid people by rule do not understand how stupid they are.

Thanks for sharing - balances out id concerns if DICE are happy with the hardware. Say what you will about their games, but DICE's Frostbite engine is a damn fine piece of engineering.

Because he dropped a drive by pointless insult without even @ing me. Let’s not pretend his snide “in denial” comment wasn’t an insult.
People that have been cursing at me right in this topic and I have let them know that I am putting them on ignore, do the same for me: insults without @me.
I guess this, in some mysterious way, makes them feel very smart.
