Xbox have really knocked it out the park with the Series S imo

Wait what, all digital but only 512 GByte SSD?

What will remain after reserving space for OS/UI? About 400GB or even less?

Xbox One reserves 138GB for OS

They have to subsidize price somehow, it's apparent that this is going to sell at premium.

It‘ll be interesting to see Sony’s response. I would want to make it to $400 or $450 with at least one model, in response to this. Really positioning themselves close to the XSS, and under the XSX seems like the play.

‘Hey, we’re only about $100 bucks more for a high-end system, and cheaper than the other top-of-the-line one’ seems like a really good message.

I don’t know if they can make it there, however.

This + gamepass may well be the option that draws me into Xbox ecosystem for the first time. Wow.

I was always a PC and Playstation guy (I borrow Nintendo consoles from my brother when a new game comes out), but this might sway me to just drop the PC and get the XSS as a second console in its place.

Hard to ignore the value proposition of a console that "fills the gaps" so to say.

What is the cheapest way to get gamepass? I'm sure I saw people buying subscription for years on the cheap. Was that a bug?

I personally won't be getting one but its a great deal, especially for casual gamers or those wanting a secondary console

Well you probably have to act fast, buy some Xbox Live Gold on those paper cards/internet and then you can change it to Xbox GP Ultimate for 1USD, it shortens the duration, but I think you can get 3 years worth of GamePass Ultimate for price of 1 year of that. But I have it "pre-paid" until 2022 so I am not exactly in the loop right now.

It's smart and strategic. Honestly the only thing hurting them at the moment is the lack of a major 1st party at launch to flex the XSX. They haven't even got anything like Miles Morales/Sackboy/Ratchet and Clank. But at the surface level:

Third parties are going to be supporting cross gen titles for some time so the X1X won't really be an issue (or only as much as the PS4 Pro);
Third parties will have a roadmap of when they will focus on the new consoles. Could be one or two years;
Titles in development and two years out are targeting the XSX and will 'scale' to the XSS;
The problem is that whereas R&C/HFW has been targeted only at PS5, MS have chosen to take a third party approach during the transition. While this is consumer friendly, it doesn't vindicate a purchase unfortunately. That's the only fuck up I can really see.

Now onto the weird stuff

1440 is a weird resolution. You'd expect most people to have 1080p panels in smaller rooms. So downsampling will be nice I guess, but 1440 is a PC monitor resolution. If you have a PC monitor, you're likely to have a PC.....
512GB? I'm already thinking 825GB raw on a PS5 isn't big enough. 512GB on an all digital is tiny.
4k upscaling doesnt say whether there is an internal scaler or the TV will just use it's own scalers

Microsoft is not here to say this box will take market share from Sony. They are saying this will grow their market share. They are compatible ideals. If anything this makes it more of a decision on whether to buy a complementary PS5 or take a smaller, more affordable second box with GPU and get access to mroe games. We keep saying it's about the games. Then games like FM, Avowed, Grounded etc are only on box (if you don't have a PC), so it broadens your game library cross platform for cheaper than a second box for convenience. I don't know why people are so scared or determined to paint it as a failure.

If I get a PS5-D at £399, then 12 months later fancy as XSS at £250 for upstairs with Gears, Halo, FM etc then that's more appetising than buying another PS5. Or upgrading my PC/dicking about setting it up in the comfy bedroom rather than the office space.

I have a 55" 4K OLED but sit about six foot away. Will I really notice THAT much difference between the S and X as the S price is great.

I know economic situation is dire right now for a lot of people, and I may speak from position of privilege of having money allocated for next-gen purchase but I feel like if you can't afford an extra 200$ on a proper Series X it's a shame to invest into a limited next-gen experience.

Digital only console with 512 SSD limited to 1440p is restrictive and not future proof. And just like Sony Digital PS5 it locks you into online purchasing with potentially big premiums as not all things will come out on gamepass, especially third-party.

I can see this selling really well in the UK. £250 for the “next” generation, aimed at the Fortnite/Minecraft and FIFA/CoD crowd, will mean more jump to the next consoles sooner rather than later.

It’s not going to “win” any wars, but it does allow for more early adopters, and a great second console choice for the more dedicated gamers down the road. You might get a few parents opting for this over PS’s offerings depending on their prices, but I largely see this as a stepping stone for existing Xbox owners to upgrade sooner rather than later.

On the flip side you have enough games to play because of GP.

if anything I think it’ll take share from the XSX. Theres a real risk that they cannibalise their own sales.

One thing that is a constant problem on gaming forums is enthusiasts (core gamers) failing to see things from a more casual perspective.

For many casual gamers they won't know about or care about the potential performance/graphical downsides to this. They will want a new console, they'll say ooh that's a good price and they'll buy it.

Most people don't know, understand or care about the sort of technical detail and graphical minutae that we, as serious enthusiasts, do. We're not normal, always try and remember that.

even if it's cheaper now ssd comes at a cost.

That's also a risk yeah - those kids who just play warzone, fortnite, cod, fifa and minecraft will be just as happy upstairs with an XSS as an XSX in reality. Maybe with an upgrade when this mess is sorted out with COVID and furloughing etc.

The lowest common denominator for this gen just broke through the floor.....thanks MS.

Let´s just hope that MS doesn´t demand visual parity aside from resolution and Devs are allowed to tone down everything else as they see fit.

I don't think they care what platform you play on as long as you pay them $10 a month for gamepass. I don't think they mind if you're on PC.

Sure but are those the games you WANT to play? Recently there were some good games on Gamepass but I still rather own CK3 that pay a monthly fee to play it. Gaming is a time-expensive hobby so unless games get shorter I just don't see it as a Netflix-type binge pastime where you sample games. (oh we already had that, it was called demos, it was free and we no longer get those cause smart marketers realised that it drove customers away most of the time)

Like sure, I'm cool if I can pay 15$ and try Grounded, Wasteland 3, CK3 and maybe even GoW5 but I'm old enough to know that it's not what I will play in long-term and the overabundance of kinda-cool-but-probably-not is not what I want from gaming.

There are good games on Gamepass. It’s hard to imagine not finding something worth playing. Although I’ve already played the good stuff on

Some people WITH jobs might actually have different priorities for their income and prefer a cheaper console, you know?
I mean of course, we have dads and moms who buy this thing for their childrens, grandmas who do gift for their nephews, casual gamers etc.

But if you are an hardcore gamers with a decent job you buy the big sister, not the lesser one, this stuff stay in your home for almost 10 years, saving 250 dollars for stuff like this is straight up moronic for me, sorry.

Its pretty stupid to get this console because the price and after buy those super expensive modules.

Anyway, I have 500 GB SSD on my Pro, and is enough, game im not playing game I copy to external hard drive.

We all know how that vent. However GamePass could make seems like it's smaller scam.

No disc + tiny HDD is a horrible combination.

It's going to run games at 1080p. It might as well be a ps5 pro. I can't believe xbox has pulled a Nintendo by launching a cheap underpowered console. If PS5 is €399 this thing is dead in the water.

What we should ask ourselves is not what games we will be able to run on next gen consoles but how they will run.

This is lame, you are sacrificing everything "appealing" for a price point. It's not worth it...

[500Gb+ all digital+ 4TF+ limited BC] nullified all the talking points against ps5.

Developers shouldn't be forced to support it.

With only 512 GB SDD this console begs for one of those pricey expansion proprietary cards MS will offer thus increasing the price overall.

That might be intended. XSS could be the higher margins console vs the limited quantity halo effect High end XSS and then raking some money through memory cards.

For an ERP of £250/$299, The Xbox Series S offers a really great deal for people planning to upgrade this year.

Make what you will of the rumoured 4TFs it holds, but the Series S if the full leaked video is anything to go by, offers support for 120FPS at 1440p, 4K upscaling for games, 4K media playback, support for DirectX raytracing, and a custom NVME 512GB SSD.

That is a great deal for £250, they're obviously planning to make up losses with this by it being discless, but this means for many people, Next Gen is not so unaffordable on launch, I mean this will retail for the same price as you can get a PS4 Slim on Argos on it's own atm, so it to me anyway, screams of great pricing.

Now obviously Sony will have to respond, they love to undercut/rival competitors price wise so I can see them retailing the PS5 Digital Edition for around £300 which would offer them a bit more leeway with customers, as despite how beloved Sony are and the vast majority of people want to get a PS5 over an Xbox Series X, this Series S will appeal to almost every casual buyer and parent as the affordable way to entertain for many years to come.

Me personally? I will be getting this and a PS5 as this means I can experience Gamepass and all it has to offer for a very affordable price, whilst still getting my preferred choice down the line in the PS5 (when HZD II comes out will be when I pounce).

Series-S.png

4K upscaling for games? What a bulletpoint....Sounds just like the Greenberg tweet that spoke about 1080p output, just adjusted for next gen...

You realize you will see every game in 2160p as your output right?

...................
299€ console run at 1440p upscaled, with raytracing and stuff, with Gamepass, cloud gaming and backward compatibility at 4K, it's a very good deal.
Raytracing, 1440p, up to 120fps, Good luck with that. Even 4K BC will be far and few between........ Minus BC, remember we are talking about next gen games here with next gen ambition and graphical upgrades....If this console does not want to fall behind on framerate, 1080p will be the most consistent resolution you will get there. Of course indies can hit 1440p and 4K...

Well, but this is much cheaper in production than a 1TB SSD (normal SSD). No controller-Chip, no memory, ...
Everything that is needed is already inside the console.
I really expect it to be at premium price (in comparison with the production price), but not as pricy a a normal 1TB SSD. I really expect something between 50-80€

I like your optimism, I am expecting something like 129eur...

You can uninstall and reinstall games whenever you like.

I always find this argument overblown. Exactly how many games (that you aren't playing) do you feel need to be permanently installed on your console, despite them sitting there unplayed for most of the time?
