Battletoads Review Thread

Keep making stuff at the standard of Flight Sim 2020 and Ori, less stuff at the standard of Battletoads. It's not a difficult concept to grasp.

But hey, if you'd rather more things like Battletoads then go for your life.

Have you played battletoads?

What for? Flight Sim is taking up most of my spare time and there's nothing that says battletoads is a must play. There are several games higher up on the list that I'd rather play on gamepass before I get anywhere near battletoads.

Why should I play it instead of something like Spiritfarer, Undermine, Neon Abyss or even Streets of Rage 4 which is a similar game that I'm still yet to play? Just for the hell of it? Just to suffer? Just because I've already payed for my subscription and it's "free"? There are a ton of games that fall into that category on my origin access subscription as well. Just being included isn't enough, it needs to justify my time.

so you come into a thread to trash a game you haven’t played. Makes sense

The reality is that none of us have time to play absolutely everything. There needs to be a process of elimination. This isn't a game that says "must play" and it's come out at a time when there are several other games that are "must plays".

Like seriously, even if we stick to stuff on gamepass, why on earth (see what I did there...) would I play this over flight simulator at the moment?

I can see what's available on gamepass, I can see people aren't starving for good games so why people are hellbent on trying to justify this game of all things at the moment is baffling to me. If you decide to play it for whatever reason and can have fun with it then great but the message to Microsoft should still be the same - this should be better.

Saying they could have done better with this game = trashing it.

Ok.

I don't diasagree that time is a key ingredient to factor into gaming life. But your posts and tone come off as if people who would take a Battletoads over any of the games you listed are somehow playing themselves because its a shit game and they should be playing something else even if they aren't a fan of simulators.

Well that's partly my point.

Some of the justification for playing the game (along with handwaving away the mixed reception) has centered around the fact that it's on gamepass so "why not" play it. In my opinion that's the wrong way to look at it it should be "why should I play it?". If it's genuinely a game that you think you will like or if it falls into a favourite genre of yours then go for your life, but if not then... yeh I've already said my bit. The whole thing becomes even more apparent when there are several 3rd party games that have launched on gamepass (as in day one releases) in the last couple of months that are supposedly better than this.

I know the reason those other games don't get talked about as much, but that's neither here nor there. In my opinion the titles that Microsoft produce to put on the service should be cream of the crop, not "filler". They are the ones who should set the standards for their service. That starts with leading by example.

“Must plays” will be different depending each individual taste. I would consider games like Sakuna and 13 sentinels aegis rim “must play”, even more than other AAA games out there but I’m sure most people will disagree with me on that.

If someone playing Battletoads and having a blast then it must be “must play” him/her.

I dont disagree that the "why not" attitude is going to be on a per gamer basis and what they want/need from a game but to write it off simply because of mixed reception feels a bit..disingenuous isn't the word I want to use but thats the only thing that comes to mind. People are telling you why to play it. They aren't unanmious by any means like Fight Simulator is on this forum, but there are plenty of people here saying that its worth a play through.

There are plenty of games that good amazing reception that people absolutely hate and vice versa, especially in the current climate of games. I think if it was a unanimous this game sucks with one or two people really fighting for it then I would understand your take a bit more.

I wouldn't call Battletoads filler at all. Its not just another beat em up or just another "whatever." Its a unique game in the Beat Em Up genre.

how do you know they could of done better without playing it? That’s my point.

the graphics look like battletoads the game plays like battletoads.

hell of a lot of people on here posting how much fun they are having with the game but your saying they could of done better yet won’t play it? Makes sense

I beat it in just under 4 hrs.
I did not enjoy the monotony of the initial beat em up levels, but it is really fun from the second quarter to the end.
Gotta slog through those first 3 or 4 levels first...

Why would you try a light hearted fun sidescrolling beat-em-up over a flight simulator? Oh I don't know, maybe you like that type of game more? What a stupid thing to say.

Great to see you in the battletoads review thread when you literally say you would never want to play battletoads. Couldn't keep to one of the other 15 xbox bashing threads on the front page?

The amount of negative user scores on this and Flight Sim where the user has only scored this a 0 and Last of Us 2 a 10 is hilarious.

Hundreds.
That's why i son't use metacritic anymore. Too many no life die-hard fanboys shitting on a plastic toy.

Well there are dickheads on both sides.
Percentage-wise you are right, but in numbers one site has much more dickheads.

Honestly I think they will be using the time between the PC release and the console release to add some more structural elements add more assists and improve the controller support. They will need to add events, challenges, achievements, even possibly some sort of career mode for this to have any sort of longevity on console.
It’s an Xbox game, it already has achievements. Are you sure you’ve actually played it?

Sad that I'm even having to do this:

The game will need more achievements. It doesn't dish them out at the same frequency your regular console game does.

As for Battletoads, I've made my points clear enough. If that's the standard people are happy with then who am I to judge.

Well 6.3 User and the thing is, most Xbox owners, myself included, have gamepass.

I'm not sure what reason you would have to keep owning an Xbox if you don't have gamepass unless you live somewhere remote without data access.

Majority of Xbox players probably did not pay for this besides their usual subscription fee. I'm 37 years old, I grew up with Battletoads and this is a disservice to the originals, the game in my opinion is shit!

Flight Sim, Ori and Gears Tactics are good yes but they are not in the same league as what Sony is delivering, Microsoft needs to do better than that.
I disagree. The quality of Gears Tactics, Ori and especially Flight Simulator is absolutely on par with SONY’s best efforts. However they are vastly different genres. I enjoy SONY as much as the others, but their games generally fall in the third person narrative. Just because the offerings from the other companies weren’t the same genre as SONY doesn’t mean that they are inferior. In all honesty I appreciate the variety.

It’s not “sad” that you have to do this. You said it will need achievements but it already has 1000G of achievements.

Nostalgia: The Game.

If you have no affinity for the franchise, it's a pretty forgettable experience. It's funny, if this was a multilplat no one from either 'side' would care about this game:

This was a nice & thorough review:

I was talking about what the game will need more of, hence the word add.

There are also other things that I listed which are already in the game which I also think the game will need more of if they want to keep your regular casual gamer engaged.

You kinda missed the word more, but we don’t need to argue this.

Isn't Battletoads at like, a 70+ meta? It's a $20 digital title.

GamePass has also given us Flight Sim, Ori, and Gears Tactics this year. Three great games with good meta scores. This week we'll also get Tell Me Why and Wasteland 3. Microsoft has delivered some great stuff this year on GamePass but everyone acts as if it's all Crackdown 3 or Bleeding Edge, lol. I don't get it. Not that either of those games "suck", either.

It is all about manufacturing a narrative. The best advice I can give Xbox gamers on this forum is to know that it is EXTREMELY pro Sony so anything that is said about another manufacturer needs to be taken with a truckload of salt. The opinion will be biased and the story will be told in a way that ultimately benefits Sony, regardless of the actual content of the story itself.

On a serious note, I absolutely hated this game. It's background blends with the foreground and the game is too flashy. The game was just kind of boring.

Whoa, just read this last page of the thread and it’s really sad. I’ve booted up Battletoads yesterday expecting nothing and... it’s fun! The levels are ridiculously long and some mechanics are hit and miss, but I’m really enjoying it. The artstyle took a while to get used to, but the cutscenes are getting progressively stupider... and funnier. One scene with the Dark Queen had me in stitches :messenger_tears_of_joy:

So yeah... the scales may be different, but the people trashing Battletoads in this threads based on prejudice aren’t much different from those who trashed TLOU2 for the same reasons. The market needs games like this too - BT won’t sell Xboxes, just like Kirby won’t sell Nintendo consoles, but it’s a nice game!

Finished it in 4 hours. Some levels were a bit tough, but overall a fun game with good humor for a fair price. Would rate it 8/10. Don't get all the hate, but it's probably from people who didn't play it and never will.

Ripped off how?
Wow the NMS defenders are here hey.
They paid $60 for a broken game at launch, that took over a year to be patched etc to a “it’s good now” level.
during the first year the devs were radio silent on updates and also promised several features that were expected but were not available at launch.

Man, me and my son were loving this game until chapter 3. Those levels with the two alien characters were trash TBH. Really hoping the game gets back on track before it ends because I was ready to rate it above SOR4.
