Would you buy a Legacy Playstation console for BC?

Since there are many people wanting Backwards Compatibility on PS5, would you buy a console dedicated exclusively for it?

What if Sony released a console or mini console in which you could play all your physical and digital PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, Would you buy it?

I think the reason Sony doesn't do BC is because they don't want to spend money on licensing and testing for all the games. So a legacy console will be just that. It would not have new enhancements or anything new. It would only allow you to play the games you have and that's it. What price would you pay for it?

I also think that licensing and testing is also the reason why Nintendo got rid of the Virtual Console.

To me, Microsoft is using too much money on BC, when I'd wish they used that money on new IPs from their studios. I'd prefer a remake than BC. I have wished for a full remake of Banjo-Kazooie for ages.

If it was your job to convince Sony to support BC what other ideas do you have so that they could approve?

If the games were playable in at least 1080p, yes. I'd prefer 4k/60fps remakes for anything considered a beloved classic though. Quite honestly, it'd be my "break in case of emergency" console in the event that I want to play the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection again.

Yes, 100% yes. To get my buck they would need to add in some basic emulation / scaling / savestate / cheat-code / frameskip , etc features, the basic stuff that has been included in PC emulators for years.

I have a PS1 and a 2 in the loft with Free McBoot, but mostly use PCSX2 if the need arises. Same for most systems now, I have them but in storage, I’ll use Redream, CXBX-r etc...

A legacy PS would have its buyers, and I’d probably buy one as a collector, but I wouldn’t go expecting Sony to whip one up anytime soon.

I own working versions of PS2, PS3, PSP, VITA, PS4.

Also have PSNOW. Ive played the crap out of everything I wanted to play though. Im kind of done with PS3 and backwards.

But about a month ago I did replay Infamous 1 and 2 but I did so through PSNOW.

What I want for backward compatibility is enhancements, even if minimal, like resolution or frame rate. More importantly, I want PSN trophies/achievements for older games that didn’t have them. And have those trophies tie into the current PSN trophy ecosystem.

I would buy a dedicated legacy console that did this, easy.

See while it's better than nothing and I would buy one... I'd rather the current gen machine plays them.

For anyone who's ever emulated on their PC they know what an improvement these classic games can have.

I just give my old consoles/games to friends/relatives. I still have my SEGA Game Gear though, but didn't use it since 1990's.

I don't care about BC. I already played almost all the games I wanted to play, and if I want to play something from the past from time to time I just hook up the console.

I am eager to play new games.

I still got a Ps3 with tons of PS1 and PS2 Classics. Will keep it, until Sony releases a PS5 with backwards capability. So, will keep my ps3 forever.

I've been tempted to get my launch PS3 repaired from YLOD for this very reason. All depends on whether or not the PS5 will be fully BC. We shall see!

If it means total BC with other playstation gens, then I would totally buy it.

At the current point I don't feel inclined to move to the next gen.

Sony already released such a system in 2006, and I bought one at that time.

I still think they should work on backward compatibility for their current and future systems. I know PS3 is too difficult for the PS4 to actually emulate, but they could have done more to bring PS1/PS2 games to the PS4. For the PS5, they should try to get both PS1, PS2, and PS3 working, for both digital and physical games.

Backward compatibility is not mutually exclusive from doing proper remasters or remakes of older games. They can allow owners of older games to play those games on the system, while working on "new" versions of the old games that have significant enhancements (beyond merely increasing the resolution or frame rate).

Also, if they allow the system to directly play physical discs, then they do not have to worry about licensing for any of those games. See how PS2, PS3, Wii, and Wii U had comprehensive backward compatibility--no need to check "compatibility lists", and no waiting to download a repackaged version of the game from the Internet. You simply pop in the disc and play.

All my PlayStations still work. So I am good at that end. But it is awesome what Microsoft is doing with BC

You know that hardware will eventually fail right? Specially when we are talking of hardware released more than 25 years ago. Also, connectors. If im not wrong, RGB cables were the only available input for PSX. Modern TVs dont even have that.

Absolutely. So many games were exclusive to those generations and not on PC so there’s no official way to play them anymore without going and finding a second hand console if yours breaks.

I have my PS4+PS3 60gb so I have that already.

Still I don't see why there would be a need for a new machine when the PS5 is capable of doing it.

As a current Xbox user, but former Playstation gamer (1 and 2 primarily), YES. I'd love to have a nostalgia machine ready to play some Winning Elevens with friends. BA-TIS-TU-TA!

No. Studios should up their game in porting their back catalogs, to PC in particular, to ensure game preservation.
Full PS BC is way too complex to undertake.

It's really not though, considering the majority of emulation legwork is done by nerds working on emus for free. Hell that is what Sony used when they shit out the PS Classic. And again Sony has done this; a PS3 60gb could play functionally every single PS game from 1994 through 2013.

Selling something to exclusively play games that people already own sounds like a really poor business decision for a company that makes billions off of game sales and services.

Yes but we are talking about a catalog of 10000 games or more. What about licensing/testing for example. I am sure many studios would not be happy to see their games being played without them making any profit. What about games from studios that don't exist anymore.

The legal aspect is why I believe this is more complex than a PC emulator. There's money on the table.

In all honesty no. I may have the itch or two to play one game in the past, but nowadays it's not worth it. I have a bunch of emulated games and I don't even play them.

I completely disagree.

If you want an example of a real waste of money, see Sony’s practice of paying third party companies to withhold game modes and dlc. I’d rather they put that money towards a good BC solution for at least PS1 and PS2 games.

Its just hardware though, nothing illegal about it. Again it’s been done before and is being done right now actually. I can go and spend 50 cents on a KOTOR disc pressed in 2002 and play it on the XSX if I want.

Would it be a pain to test sure but that’s what the money is for.

Nope, rather wait for HD remakes.
All super old consoles I can play on my PSP Go via emulation.
While all old PlayStation games that I loved have had or would eventually get remastered or remade.

been waiting for a Ridge Racer collection and remakes of Jumping Flash 2/Jet Moto/ Wipeout/MGS1 (a faithful remake), Twisted Metal 2 for forever.

Also, all those PS2 remasters on PS3 don’t work on PS4 or PS5
