not really. it has to do with having a secure platform. having that payment bypass adds a loophole that a lot of devs will fully exploit to gain information and increase predatory microtransaction hell. It isn't all just about getting a "CUT"
But as someone who has worked on alot of ios apps I can say reguardless of that, IOS is still hell on earth for developers. the ever changing rules is a huge pain in the ass.

Apple claims game streaming apps are against the App Store policies and that developers have to submit every single game on the app individually to be approved.

Yet Apple doesn't do that with movie streaming apps like Netflix.

Apple has contradictory rules for game and other types of apps, all because they want to reduce competition for their $4.99 Apple Arcade service no one cares about.

If Epic were to come and offer Fortnite as an Apple Arcade exclusive, Apple would be sucking them off like no one else.

That 10% is the transaction processing fee from using a cheaper payment processor (than Apple). Transactions are not processed for free they have to pay someone. They would rather pay cheaper prices to someone else instead of being forced to use Apple. Plus this is more about us having control over our devices. Apple shouldn't be the sole entity to decide what apps we can install. Game Pass is just the most recent example.

One of these things is built on a need to have its own walled-garden ecosystem, the other uses it as an additional revenue stream above and beyond the hefty margins made on the hardware.

Can you imagine if Linus Torvalds had the ability to suddenly "lock down" Linux and decide which software was allowed on Linux and that he was going to take a cut of all the money that was transferred because of its use? He would instantly become the most wealthy and powerful person on the planet and the entire world economy would collapse.

That's impossible because it's under the GNU Project and tied too close to the GNU OS, hence the name GNU/Linux.
He could do it, but he would be the only one using it, because everyone else would be in the previous release (which, by definition would be still free) and making a new OS, "Linuxy".

I don't think anyone here should know anything about computing to make an opinion on this matter.
The matter is that Epic broke a mutual agreement with Apple, not that a 30% cut it's too much or about the "freedom of platforms".

There's free software and private software (or whatever you want to call it). Every company has the right to do whatever they want with the software they build (and comply with the license their software builds upon).
If you want to have an alternative store, jailbreak your iPhone or install something like AltStore and live with the consequences.
If you don't like that business model, Android it's still available.

Could you stop saying that Software Engineers applaud what Epic's doing because I'm a Software Engineer and I disagree with Epic's actions, they lack professionalism.

I dunno, the way I see it:

1. Epic is trying to bypass Apple’s rule (even if it’s a bit shitty). But this is Apple’s platform and they’re basically rebelling on Apple’s rule. Then they shouldn’t complain because they’re violating laws on Apple’s rule on Apple’s platform.

2. Epic is trying to claim Apple is the bad guy but it’s starting to look like they’re the bad guy because they’re defending what they did was okay... and it doesn’t seem okay what they did.

Basically: they should just follow Apple’s rule on Apple’s platform so they won’t get into hot water like now. I mean I wouldn’t visit New York and do something what’s supposedly illegal there (but legal in my own city) and defend my actions, that’s just stupid.

If I didn’t like Apple’s law, it’s I either I have to bend to it so I can participate on it or to not participate on it at all.

This is all about money. When you accept a movie streaming service how much additional cash can be made once sub is paid? You can watch movie or not. You don't keep paying over and over again to watch more shows. When you sign up for Gamepass and have access to 100s of games is there additional money to be made? DLC and MX are a big part of games now and Apple would get ZERO of that. If they got a cut they wouldn't care. Business is cutthroat.
