Xbox has told developers that they cannot charge players to upgrade their current-gen games to Xbox Series X versions as DLC, as an alternative to its

This is messy, because the article goes on to say
"However, developers and publishers who choose not to support Smart Delivery can still offer owners of current-gen games a discount on purchasing a second next-gen version of the game on the Microsoft Store. Theoretically, third-party publishers could also charge for physical game upgrades via their own schemes, such as via retailer promotions."

So MS can't force thier hand, they can sell thier content however they like, but not in certain ways? Honestly I think this is good, it will force companies that want to charge consumers twice into the spotlight appearing greedy to the public and media...but ONLYIF enough 3rd party devs adopt smart delivery or free upgrades

No, it means:

MS: "Can you guys use smart delivery for your current/next gen titles"
2K: "lol, no"

It's just MS providing an option. Some will take it and other greedy fucks like 2K won't. It's smart for MS not to force their hand since third party relationships will make or break the platform.

Good this will put the spotlight on EA and Activision as the greedy fucks they are.

It looks like 2K is doing it in some confusing way with NBA:

How feasible is this.

Doing upgrades to existing games for next gen takes man hours and no one works for free. Its not just simply flicking a switch and there you go, next gen version done.

I wouldn't mind paying a small fee for next gen upgrades as long as the developers hard work is rewarded. I will have an issue with paying full price for these games though.

You shouldn't have to pay twice for the same game.

3rd party publishers tend to favor Sony anyway so it shouldn't matter as much to Microsoft. They should focus on what is best for gamers and not worry as much about Publishers. If allowed the publishers will hold the industry back and continue monetize every possible aspect of gaming.

I checked on the Xbox game store.
Standard is labelled Xbox one/one X 69€ (normal price in France) no mention of series X

Deluxe is labelled Xbox one/one X /Series X with smart delivery. 99€

Eh.. just means actual "Smart Delivery" is always free. MS isn't allowing them to use that system for free.

Nothing stopping devs from doing whatever they want on their own as we've seen with EA. Still not sure how EA is going about it though; supposedly just like smart delivery you can use it with your physical purchase with no download code.

Isn't this taking away an option? It's stating that you cannot get an upgrade option anymore. i.e. you own the version on last gen (xbox one) then pay a smaller fee to get the Xbox series version. This was the case for Call of Duty Ghosts for example.

This may go two ways but it's less options now. It can either mean the devs will offer it free (which they could have done before) or now you just have to buy a new game at full price instead.

Whats the sony option?
Again. I'm asking someone to clarify "What is SmartDelivery" because it's sounding like it's an amazing piece of technology.

Cause I thought SmartDelivery was, basically, a checkin system that recognizes the console you're on. If you have a Series X and only owned the One X version, the system give you the Series X version, if it's available. The developers still have to do all the work to re-code it for the next gen consoles. Am I misunderstanding SmartDeliver? What's the difference between this and CrossBuy?

Edit: As far as we know, CyberPunk 2077 will get a free upgrade to next gen. Is CDPR having to work on the PS5 version while the Series X version is automatically created by SmartDelivery?

Did anyone actually read that story or just the title? They don't want upgrades to be charged DLC but a dev/pub is free to make totally separate current gen and next gen versions of the game like 2K is doing with NBA 2k21 and as almost all publishers have done in past generations. This article is basically meaningless.

No that's basically it, it's still going to be two separate versions of the game but if you upgrade your console you get the upgraded version as well either through a patch or just replacement.

Neither version is automatically created. In order for Cyberpunk to take advantage of the PS5 or XSX hardware they have to optimize for those platforms.

Sure but premise is flawed, because Sony needs to agree on this with MS. If they don't then fuck all happens and people in here going to boast about "INSANE" number sold on PS5 vs Xbox...you know, let's not kid ourselves, there are shitload of reason why company should not do this approach.

I couldn't disagree more with that statement. Subscription based services are the new cancer of gaming and Microsoft is leading it like they always do since they intruduced paid online with the Xbox Live Gold.
This will end well, Neo Member and already warring. Well it does not matter if it is alt or neo.

All it seems to be is streamlining a "very high/ultra setting" mode for consoles.
The game detects that it's on specific hardware it will shift to those higher Res textures, screen resolution, FPS, effects etc.

That's my understanding of it anyway.

Just like Netflix and Spotify are cancer for the movie and music industry, right?

If only I could still buy CDs, Blu-Rays or physical games? Oh wait....

You kidding? Game pass is the greatest thing since fried chicken. Cancer is a serious issue. Don’t use it like that.

Ugh. I feel like this promotes more work for devs to get around it and avoid smart delivery. So much confusing mess with all the different versions already.

Also not letting them charge for upgrades probably means less meaningful upgrades.

If CD Project Red will be upgrading Cyberpunk 2077 for next gen for free, same for Ubisoft with AC Valhalla, anyone can do it. Especially devs already making a PC version, all the assets and extra stuff like Ray Tracing already exists on PC version, shouldn't be too much work to implement and maybe even get extra sales as people who have not played those games might want to enjoy the next gen enhanced version.

Yes, Netflix is other cancerous tumor for movie industry. Quantity over quality, that is the future of game pass, ps now, etc. Microsoft is taking loses now because want promote this service. On 3 or 4 years, will be funny see people angry with MS because their exclusive games are little games or SAAS games.

If $59 is not profitable for companies, how the hell $10 month for +100 games would be profitable.
