Rumor - Sony paying for many AAA timed exclusives (Previously associated with Xbox)

Didn't see any big megaton timed exclusives at the sony even. I think Deathloop and the Tokyo game kind whiffed and are not going to be system sellers. And then theres Kena...I guess? Still going to wait on reviews on that. Declaring it a great game based on some snippet footage seems way too early.

MS will have more to announce at the July event i'm sure.

I'm not too bothered thus far. I can wait on Tokyo, Deathloop etc as i'm not really excited for those based on what I've seen thus far.

On top of that, I prefer the best versions of games running at best resolution, framerates, and other bells n whistles. So that makes it even easier to way on XSX versions.

Project Athia is a pretty big grab

I always thought this stuff was a waste of money. Nobody was swayed to buy an Xbox to play Rise of the Tomb Raider a year early and no ones going to buy a PS5 to play Ghsotwire Tokyo a year early.

Or alternatively, when MS informed Devs of their intention not to publish any next gen exclusives in the first year, and tried to encourage developers to consider down porting their projects to meet the current gen spec, they asked Sony if they would consider exclusivity? I know MS are not preventing Devs from having next gen only games on their system, but their not exactly encouraging the idea either. It's not all cut and dry.

Do you have a source for that? Link?

I disagree with the comparisons. There were litteral meltdowns and boycotting going on all over the internet when ROTR was Xbox eclusives. I'm not seeing anyone upset about Ghostwire Tokyo. ROTR is a substantially bigger game and a lot of people were pissed off

In terms of sells, I kind of agree. But I do think ROTR helped Xbox sells in that window. It was a big game

Getting the same vibes as another SE game that gamers are still waiting for 8 yrs later. Forgot it's name. We may get it 4-5 yrs from now and it may even be good. Who knows!

Huh? I don't think there's any SE game that was announced 8 years ago that isn't out

Unless you're talking about Capcom and Deep Down

I think you are completely wrong. Throw in another 5 "paid for exclusives" in 6 months and I think many people will want the PS5 more.

What franchises are even left to money hat that are associated with Xbox that aren’t first party? Mass effect and bioshock?

Just consider it an alternate view. It's always good to see things from different perspectives I find. Their were rumblings Devs were not happy with having to cater to a lower spec console, it's just everyone assumed this pertained to the rumoured Series S.

It depends on the games. People don't care that much about Tomb Raider. Do you think the people who were all excited for Final Fantasy 7, care that it's coming to Xbox a year or more later? Not really. Part of the reasons people hype up that E3 showing that one year was because of Final Fantasy 7; because it was such a big game, nobody really cared about the exclusivity part. It's the games people don't really care about when they are not busy being excited that they go "oh it's just a timed exclusive, I can wait" whereas if it's something big it's "I can't wait". Plus, stuff like this helps your momentum by giving you good press around your product.

Also, people like me and you follow what's timed and what's in perpetuity but general masses don't.

So Sony already has, by far, the best first-party studios and franchises in the industry.

Sony has the luxury of Japanese studios that choose to put their games on PlayStation and leave them off of Xbox (stuff like Persona, Dragon Quest, Disgaea, most Tales of games, etc).

Now, they're doing what Microsoft did a bunch last gen and are paying for big third-party exclusives?

It isn't even fair anymore.

I wonder if Sony is doing this because they know MS is going to come out of the gate swinging this time around and not stumble like they did with the X1 launch. Also, I'm sure Sony is aware of all the rumors that MS is prepared to price the XSX and Lockhart ultra aggressively in order to regain market share.

I didn't watch the video but if by "associated" they mean games somewhat more synonymous with Xbox due to initially being exclusive to them for at least an entire generation:

- Alan Wake
- Ninja Gaiden
- Mistwalker games

They should be always doing things to keep the heat up. They want to grow their business not maintain it or slightly let it decrease. They want to aim for more and more market share. This is great for the industry short-term. bad long-term if Xbox were to fail; great long-term if Xbox stays alive. I want Xbox to do super well this generation so that there's constant pressure for Sony to try to get better and for them to strive to be more consumer friendly. If Microsoft wasn't so ruthless during the early days of the 360; we probably wouldn't have Cerny as lead architect and we'd probably have a PS5 OS worst than the 360 one. Sony probably wouldn't have invested so much into their first party if they were just up against Nintendo.

I think what The Initiative is working on will have a lot of Tomb Raider DNA....

Hmm. Previously associated with MS?

It has to be a third-person heavy narrative game for Sony to be interested........... Alan Wake, maybe?

For those who label this as shitty practice, you need to understand that this will ignite exclusives war. That is what we want. If every game is multi-platform and both platform are ok woth fortnight, call of duty and battlefield, then you gamers are the losers. This will lead to great games and two platforms that are vastly different from each other. It makes it worth it to actually own both.

Similar to ps2 and original xbox days, you own both platforms because they had different games. Games at that time were fantastic.

Never understood why timed is such a shitty practice. For me as long as the game comes out on my plattform I am happy. If it comes out Half a year - 1 year after releae, alright. Me wanting to play the game doesn‘t change especially if it‘s not something I get spoilered on.

Sounds like a huge waste of money to me. Hope this is bullshit, they have better places to use that money on.

Can't stand this paying for timed exclusivity bullshit. It's a scummy, scummy practice. Doesn't matter who does it, Xbox or PlayStation. It's scummy all round & I'm disappointed that it's happening again.
What do you mean 'happening again'? It never stopped happening. It's part of the industry. Accept it.

I always think that timed exclusives are a waste of money just either buy a studio, pay a studio to make a game, or build a studio to make a similar game but I guess it is a lot cheaper to buy a timed exclusivity. I can't say I hate or find it scummy for me this is just your normal business tactic.

Am I a bad person for genuinely liking this kind of thing?

The joy making a list of both sides exclusives, and choosing which console to buy based off those exclusives is euphoric.

Worst kind of vindictive content. It honestly turns me off to a game that I know is a timed exclusive. I'm not going to wait a year to play your shit, or I'm not buying it on my platform just because you blocked it from another.

I agree with those saying the money should be spent elsewhere.

This doesn't really do anything for me as a PlayStation owner. Exclusives are great, and I want as many as possible, but only because they're designed around a single system and are therefore usually higher quality - this will be even more the case with the unique features of the PS5. But this won't be the case with timed exclusives.

I'd much prefer they invested in a couple of new first party studios.

Maybe, they’ve long been rumoured to be interested in acquiring Remedy. And Xbox hasnt seemed at all interested in doing another one. Alan Wake would sell great on PlayStation.

However, I’m inclined to think Sony have something going on with Rockstar. There was something fishy about starting the presentation with GTA V.

Not really a rumor. They've already done it with Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo, two games that by all accounts, would have been multi-platform at release.

This is a pretty crazy move IMO. Sony hasn't really done this in the past. We've seen it more from Microsoft. Sony must have paid a pretty penny for those two.
They have fear of MS,if they truly believe in the great exclusives PR don't need to buy titles of Bethesda pub. I can understand for medium and small pub. becouse they need more money then anyone else...but now Bethesda the devs of fallout 76 are chained with Sony for the people that don't even know what they are buying

Sad to say this, but I'd rather Microsoft pay Third Parties to have Uncensored games on their Platform to show how ridiculous Sony can be with their Censorship these days.

Not a fan of the Timed Exclusive stuff, and I don't honestly think it works if you stick to PS/Xbox/Nintendo and I think it does backfire sometimes when said game sells poorly on said Timed Exclusive Platform, but to me it is kind of like dick waving to fans on the other side to prove a point.

In the case of Indies, where they don't have the finances and manpower that big studios do to take risks, I'm not too aggrieved by giving them buying timed exclusivity.

It lets them finish their game and concentrate on one platform at time, then they can give thei fill attention to the next platform while getting income from their initial release.

With big budget titles or studios and games that are either finished or would be completed anyway, the practice can sod right off.

I play multi-platform titles a.k.a. "console exclusives" on PC so both Sony and MS can suck my dick. 1st party exclusives are obvious and fully understandable, but taking away 3rd party multi-platform titles from gamers is an anti-consumer practice which I'll never support.

just like how AngryJoe is loving the game right now, but he isnt.

How do you know that? Based on what? Is he screaming again for funsies? To me, Fat Joe (this one, not the rapper) and Goofy have a lot in common.

Without him, the show would be much better (with tiny joe and mighty alex). He has been uploading few days old news for the past months, 2 clips per week.

He did not play Horizon ZD, because reasons. He is more the instant-coffee type of guy, he has the patience of a newborn. His best content is when discussing films, games as a trio and not when he starts touching tiny Joe for the n-th time.
