Gonna be so fire in 5 years time on GAF when we're gonna get threads like "Yeah, this game is like... a 7."

Not trusting the reviewers but I want it to be a strong 8 at the very least in my eyes.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake felt that way. The hype is generated at release and reviewers have had their early screening excitement. Then it goes live. People are excited for it because everyone else was. Then 2-3 weeks go by and it’s like “yeah, it wasn’t all that great”.

I loved the first game, so I bought a copy of TLoU2 already digitally. It could get an 11/10 or 8/10. I think perfect 10’s should be revisited a month or so later. What happens a month or so after a game gets launched? They typically move on and are gloating about another game. Will these people actually hardcore TLoU2 in gaming history? Do they see it sitting at the Smithsonian Institute in a glass case marked “Perfect Video game”?

I really hope it’s good. I just wonder if sometimes people live off a high and opinions will change for everyone else. I am definitely looking forward to playing it.

For what? Do you believe the average will magically change in two weeks?
There are already 79 reviews on the Meta.

I don’t care about the average. I’m more curious about the user base reaction in contrast to the “professional” industry reviewers who can only discuss so much at this point.

So you pre-ordered a sequel to a game you didnt really like in the first place? lol
I never said I didn't like it whatsoever. TLOU for me was incredibly overrated, always was. I played through it and enjoyed what I played, but a lot of the core gameplay elements to me felt like they were incredibly hyped up. The physical combat felt visceral and in your face which was cool. The stealth felt incredibly meh to me, and the gunplay was fine. I really liked the inventory and crafting system too. But the story, writing, and characters is what made it shine to me, period. When people reacted like it was the best game ever, I never agreed. I thought it was definitely a game worth playing, but never a god among video games by any means.

Playing it for the first time I remember thinking of games that did shooting better, stealth better, exploration better, and so on. But I couldn't think of another game that came close to the characters and story at the time (The Walking Dead was up there but I can't remember if that was before or after), which explains what I loved the most. If the story is stripped here, and it sounds like in a lot of situations it is (and I was unfortunately spoiled), I had hoped the gameplay elements that I wasn't the most excited about in the previous game were and are stronger here. But it sounds like they're not, which is enough for me to wait is all.

The same user base scores that spam 0 or 10 to all games depending on his console choice? Yeap... great choice.
Do you will complain after few days when Meta removed the 0 scores from the "users" too?

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I've cancelled my preorder. This is the first time I've ever down this. 🤷‍♂️

The Skill Up is enough for me to justify my decision. He recently did a TLOU review, and everything he said about the game was exactly how I felt about it (years ago). Which doesn't happen often.

So, hearing what he has to say about TLOU2 is more than enough for me to pull out. Sounds like a lot the core gameplay is very similar to the first, rather than an improvement. Which for me is enough to withdraw. TLOU was, to me, a mediocre game surrounded by an incredible story and characters. I'm sure it will be the same here, if not lesser.

Maybe I'll buy it when it drops in price, or I'll just watch a play through.

Dunno. All I do know, is that I'm not $80 richer, lmao.

Im sort of in your shoes but I will be picking it up since I game share with someone and it's my turn.

I think I fall into the minority where cinematic excellence just doesn't sway me entirely in a video game. I fully understand how difficult it is to make this game look the way it does.i appreciate just how good the writing and tech behind bringing the characters to life with such fidelity is.

But then when I have to play it for a long while at some point the disconnect happens and I feel like I am no longer playing a game but working through a movie.

We'll see next week though.

Fair enough then mate.

We've come full circle

Pre-review

- Without playing the game: "This game will suck and have awful reviews
- Making excuses early: "If it doesn't have awful reviews it's because reviewers were paid"

Post-review

- With an overwhelming majority of amazing reviews: "All positive reviews are from paid shills"
- Grabs the one not so stellar review: "See, I told you the game sucks"

People are sad.

The toxic dumb trolling of TLOU2, a campaign that started all the way back before it was even halfway through development with 'crunch' FUD, is the most pathetic thing I've seen for a long time.

It looks even more sad now that we find out the game is GotG worthy.

I'll stick with SkiilUps review on this as it seemed the most honest

And it seems like he’s almost on the brink of apologizing for not liking it via Twatter

I heard several reviews from youtubers. They all seemed pretty honest, even when not singing praises to the game. You should say: I'll stick with this dude because it conforms to what I think it is. And that's ok, but don't sell it as being the most honest, because it's not.

Are you really telling him how to express his opinion? Lmao what are you, his mother? 🤣

“The clever blend of cinematics and gameplay all come together perfectly to create an unforgettable experience that rivals some of the greatest classics in American cinema. All that’s left to do now is see it for yourself”

How the fuck do these people not cringe at writing shit like this? Rivals some of the greatest classics in American cinema??

Mmmhmm. 🙄

It will divide critics and users. I’m talking Userscores, the haters will vote this down.

I can see this turning into the next Death Stranding trash fire.

I thought the reviewers were actually quite fair about that. I loved it myself but it's a weird game and should naturally divide opinion. We had Edge who fucking hated it so much they refused to review it. GOOD! Give me something that makes reviews sound like they aren't just press release statements from the developers.

hindsight review will always lead to lower score. people will be able to find faults in their subsequent run throughs. Excitement at the time of 1st review is what matters in my opinion

It sounds bloody marvellous. I haven't watched the Skill up video because, even though I love his content and respect his assessments, giving it a title like that means he's got to justify it and therefore he's likely going to focus heavily on what proves that title. He could be right but I'll decide that and I don't want to go into the experience observing the specific things he's pointed out. That would colour my own experience. The majority say it's good and that's what I'll take into it. Any negatives are then personal to me.

Stop please... only the random SkillUp (I never heard about) matters now.
SkillUp is a pretty good reviewer. However, I disagree with him on how good the gameplay of the first TLoU game is. I find his points regarding pacing and puzzles potentially good. Obviously I can't say anything about the story telling, but his arguments are sensible.

He may not be "right", but his point of view usually has something to stand on. So do what you will, but I don't think that he should be brushed off.

I wonder how it controls, I didn't last more than half hour with the first game because the character controls were so atrocious.

I just watched the SkillUp review and he sounded a bit harsh but fair.

I was a bit cynical before watching (due to how Days Gone and Death Stranding were review bombed), but gave it a listen.

I can see how he would feel about this game in proper context - he didn't like the first one that much.

I did like that gameplay loop back then though, and having just refinements sounds about right to me.

So funny to see people use one or two bad reviews as the objective reality because Sony paid literally all the rest of the world to rate it well. 9/11, aliens, fake reviews, and the nazis on the moon... What a wonderful world. Lol

20 people liking a thing versus 2 don't linking it (we all have differente tastes... I absolutely respect all the bad reviews that are not politically correct bullshit) is divisive? NOOOPE lol Zelda Botw wasn't recevede in a divisive way because of 2 bad reviews lol

I prefer an honest bad review that focuses on the games flaws than a review that rates a game based on political bullshit. Case in point, Days Gone. A lot of the negative reviews pulled the technical aspect being less than polished, and the assets / npcs being repetitive, and I can fully understand a worse review for that. Now when they criticised the game because of its "toxic masculinity" I was like: Dafuq?

That said, rating a >17 game for being violent, like gamespot, an 8, while rating something like Rainbow Six a 10, is just asinine.

Naughty Dog bar is sky high damn. Seem they delivered on their elevated high expectations with understandable outliers. These are just opinions folks. Someone will alway hate or dislike aspects of things --it's nothing wrong with that. In fact it should be encouraged. You want a broad spectrum. Looking forward to this one and what ND learns and applies to their next game. Hopefully its a Sci-Fi story. =)

Ah yes, an opinion of an opinion. How meta. :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Really though, reviews are subjective. Anyone can say, "That one is right, and that one is wrong" and the outcome will change. I only sit by the SkillUp one as his views of the original are right up there with mine. Mind you, he may come off as abrasive or harsh to some, but to me he comes off as honest and true. I say that because of his TLOU opinions being on par with mine. He also provides a good amount of insight as to why, rather than just being like "I DON'T LIKE THING!" 🤷‍♂️

Given the amount of comments i'm seeing regarding the gameplay not really being improved very much, that screams 70-80% in my mind. It was already fairly lacklustre in the first TLOU, and the reviews seem to be suggesting it hasn't improved all that much. I'm sure there is some stellar cinematic presentation, but that doesn't make for a good game in my mind.

Yeah, because that can't ever happen, right. Games will always be inferior because they're just video games ...

I haven't seen a single review that hasn't said gameplay is improved greatly. But then again, I'm not prone to confirmation bias.

Loved the first game, but I’ll probably wait until things calm a bit before I pick it up. I definitely want to play it, but even I know that a lot of these initial reviews can be full of shit. Some of them just sound silly. Maybe it really is that good, but the language used is so over the top at times.

I mean, it was one of the first things i spotted regarding reviews while on twitter. Maybe you are more prone to it than you believe.

The rest of the reviews don't seem to present how much better the combat is over the first title, which was a little weak already.

I can remember in the past clinging to the few positive reviews a game I was excited about got... I'm not sure I understand trying to find negative outliers, though, like why? Granted, I've wasted my money doing it my way but what's the point of wanting to dislike something and hoping it's bad? If Skill Up is just genuinely where you go for review coverage and no one else will do then I guess I get that (wait... no I don't, I've never trusted any one source that much in my life) but otherwise it just seems weird.

Its honestly laughable to me that a game that has 'competent but unremarkable'' gameplay is a 9/10.. Gameplay is the MOST important thing in a game, everything else is the iceing on the cake, at least that's how it used to be with reviewers, its certainly the standards by which I always have and always will judge a GAME.

I really have a substantial number of issues with the Polygon review. Whilst I appreciate different opinions, the actual body of text doesn't really convey anything to do with the game and more so grievances about real world violence and judging the game based on what it isn't.

Now, I'm not so naive that I don't think it's a valid critique but it seems very misguided to review a game like that.
