Makes no sense, the game still sells plenty and it's #5 on Global Top sellers on Steam right now. Whenever they discount it (which is all the time) it bumps up to #1. That's not counting third party key sites and their own store.
Usually publishers only get a couple of cents per claimed copy on EGS, so Rockstar must've had a really good deal if that actually happens.

The fact that everyone already has it is why they can give it away for free, not so many potentially lost customers. And while many people have it, not everyone has it on PC. I for one had it on release for Ps3, and got the upgraded version again for PS4...but there is no way in hell I'm buying a game 3 times. Besides this gets more people into the online and the micro-transactions.
Its also about the psychology of it a lot of gamers will think "holy shit they're giving away GTA? I already have it on Steam but I had to pay 50 bucks for that, I guess they're pretty generous over at Epic"...of course us cynical "in the know" gaffers won't think like that, but if this turns out to be true I know plenty of people who will.

Personally I think they should go all the way or nothing. Sure GTAV will win over some customers but not enough to win over all the customers who already own it on steam. If they want to earn that good will, releasing something like RDR2 for free will get alot more people onboard and start making them a viable competitor, instead they're choosing the slow little by little approach, which may cost them more in the long run.

In fact a lot of the indie games they've handed out for free are completely DRM free. You can download them, uninstall the launcher and they still work (it's mostly just smaller games though)

The mod scene is decent but it's nowhere near as great as it could've been, Rockstar and Take-Two gave been constantly trying to cripple mod makers in-game and in real life all because they want people in the GTA Online eco system.

You'd be surprised how tight some people are. There are weird folk out there who will happily wait 7 years for a sale or to get a game for free. They don't think anyone deserves their hard earned money!
