Mick Gordon says he doubts he will work on Doom again.

I absolutely understand but a contract is what it is. We don't know yet if they really fucked him over or is it just that his "creativity" is hurt
Yea, there aren't enough details and Mick is professional enough to not divulge more beyond that PM and clearing up which tracks he did and didn't mix in the tweet reply.

That said, based on the spectrograms in the tweet I linked, I think most composers who aren't starving for money would call it quits.

The others and you in this thread are the minority, I assure you.
As someone that's into all genres, but primarily into hardcore and metalcore, I despise Djent and sounds associated with it.

That being said, of course when I heard samples of Mick's work on 2016 I groaned at it. I just wanted straight metal without beeps and boops. Especially without the Djent influence. But I knew that Mick did great work.

By the time 2016 dropped, I warmed up to it because it helped bring everything together in the experience. I still hate Djent, etc. This same feeling went on with DOOM Eternal.

You can hate the form of music all you want. But there's no denying that he's talented at what he does. If this DOOM series was meant to be a trilogy or then some, it wouldn't feel right having Mick do the first two and not the others. Definitely sounds like publisher strongarm bullshit. I mean, to put all this time and effort into your music, only to have someone else come in and start mixing and "finalizing" it. Sounds pretty damn gross. Especially for someone like Mick who sounds very much like a perfectionist.

Destroy Erase Improve is one of the best metal albums ever tbh. Can't blame them for what they spawned!

Funnily, Mårten Hagström, the rhythm guitarist of Meshuggah, actually apologized for spawning the "Djent" genre in an interview. Don't know if he was being sarcastic or not but it's a pretty funny interview.

Reminds me of what Mike Patton and Maynard have said about Nu-Metal. Whatever. Meshuggah are Metal gods and Djent can't take that away from them.

Being technically in the right does not mean it is a business savvy move to piss off the lead composer who was pulling all his weight and then some and whose music was one of the essential components of this new DOOM’s atmosphere.
Not a very dissimilar scenario to the one you would have if they pissed off and sent away Hugo Martin for example.

Note: this is an issue coming from ID Software and not Bethesda Softworks alltough i can see them having a say in management too

I don't and can't possibly know enough to say if it's business-savvy to eventually be rid of Mick Gordon as Doom's composer.

I do think that Mick is a very professional and cool dude (based on seeing some of his replies to others) and if they really end up getting someone else to replace him, the new guy is going to be in an awkward position trying to fulfill id's demands while also catering to the fans who'd be thinking "You're not Mick Gordon!".

It's like Jason Newsted filling in for Cliff Burton, except it looks like Mick got a discount version of the Jason treatment here.

If a new Wolfenstein and Doom come out in future and only Wolfenstein has Mick Gordon on composition duties, then it'd be quite clear which parties are having issues.

Even by Heavy Metal standards, it sucks. I would've been happier had they used synthwave instead if they didn't want to go Metal.
Every time I play Doom (2016), I just mute the soundtrack and put on my own playlist.
Could you share some (if not all) of the tracks from your playlist if it isn't too much trouble?

P.S. Since text doesn't always convey things well, I'm genuinely interested in trying out your playlist with the game.

I just find it funny that some posters are saying "not great for those who don't like metal". Doom is metal. And it always was since the beggining. As for the ones wanting other flavors of metal, ok, that's understandable. But detaching Doom from metal would kill the game.

I also understand why some people hate djent. It has ben run to the ground and copied a lot without creativity and by the numbers bands. But Mick is one of the composers who write stuff with soul. He is not Periphery's 256 rip-off band. His work with Killer Instinct is one of the best fighting game osts ever.

I have nothing to say, but I find this and I find that funny:

A lot of great and timeless stuff on your playlist. zbut it seems to me you just don't like modern metal in general., not just Mick's stuff. That's ok though.

Funnilly enough when I first heard Accept's Balls to the Wall as a kid, at that moment,¥ I knew I was a metalhead for life.

Ambush is the newest band on the list. They formed in 2013.
And what do you mean by "modern Metal"?

Modern metal as in downtuned screamed death metal melodic influenced or metalcore or deathcore or djent. Stuff like that.

I love classic metal since I was a kid but I love the modern groovy djenty shit as well. Gets my blood pumping.

Must be an acquired taste because I just can't stand bands like Machine Head, Lamb of God or Meshuggah.
I saw Mastodon opening for Metallica and I nearly fell asleep wishing to God that they stop playing.

doesn't matter, Mick Gordon's stuff is not great by the standards of djent either.

Even comes with awesome formatting, thanks a ton!

I'm a little surprised you said "Anything by the Big Four" considering that Metallica's output has been quite polarising over the decades.

I'd say Slayer's is probably the most consistent sounding in a sense.

Also starting to suspect (jokingly) that you're RazörFist's evil twin, except he'd probably rock a Garrett avatar instead of Sam Fisher.

Huge loss for Doom. Dude is one of the best in the business.

Not sure this is the appropriate thread but here is my favorite Mick Gordon music:

I hope Killer Instinct don't drop the ball like Doom! Hope Mick is in again.

Nightwolf cries every night in fetal position remembering Thunder has this theme and he doesn't.

His work on 2016 and Prey were much better than Eternal in my opinion. It's a shame though as they will probably play it very safe with the next pick for DOOM

Composers can change, but Mick saying this before the first DLC even hits feels like something went bad during the production of Eternal and he was pushed out...
There's certainly something up with how the Doom Eternal itself has turned out, and changed direction in some very questionable ways.
Most notably the messy all over the place storytelling bullshit and the kiddy color theme/UI design.

Something is definitely up.

That's all great stuff, but it has too much 80ties feel to it (Dance with the Death).
I can see this music in an indie game, not in a new doom game.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
The soundtrack of eternal was good but it didn't hit me the way 2016 did. I got the collectors edition which apparently I will get a copy of the soundtrack in lossless. I will have to give it a shot.

time to hire the quake 2 composer

quake 2 soundtrack was awesome. I think NIN worked on it?

But the game also had a feature where you could put in a music CD and it would play the tracks instead of the included soundtrack, and Metallica's Load album, which had just come out, was absolutely perfect with the game.

Capcom should try and get Mick for DMC6.

This is............. a great idea!

Not sure if all fans would love, since many wants DMC the most anime possible but I think it would be great. I would like a lot if Mick Gordon make music at least for Dante, who has a more adult/dangerous/dirt vibe than Nero

It's been doing that to me when I embed the video on this site and I'm logged in. If I go to a private browser where I'm not logged in it plays just fine. Not sure what's going there. I'll try again, but this time just pasting it into Chrome instead of embedding on Firefox...

If that doesn't work, try clicking the video to open it in Youtube, or use this link. It's nothing amazing, but it's got a nice, peaceful flow to the carnage.
