Bethesda's Doom 1 & 2 console ports adding Final Doom, Sigil for free!

This year's Doom 1 & 2 console ports might have had a few teething problems, but Bethesda has continued to improve them since launch. And now, as part of Doom's 26th anniversary celebrations, the publisher has revealed that both games will be getting free curated WAD add-ons soon, including John Romero's recent unofficial fifth Doom episode Sigil.

The news comes via Bethesda's Doom anniversary livestream (skip to the 47-minute mark below), which began the Doom port info blow-out with word that an upcoming patch will introduce a locked 60fps and aspect ratio options. The really exciting stuff, though, comes in the form of free community created WADS, which will appear in a curated Add-ons menu soon.

One of those free add-ons will be Sigil - which launched in May, and consists of nine new single-player stages and nine new deathmatch levels - but Bethesda has a few more notable offerings lined up too. Fans will also be able to download TnT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, both of which formed the 32-level commercial release Final Doom back in 1996.

All three add-ons will be free to download and will be available for both Doom and Doom 2 on consoles. Additionally, Bethesda has confirmed that the well-regarded No Rest for the Living expansion will be making its way to Doom 2.

There's no release date for any of this yet, but the update is scheduled to come to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch "soon".

Great news. Bethesda has improved these ports over the last few months so this is a nice little apology for their screw-up! 60fps bump-up and aspect ratio settings is great news as well!

I paid for my copy of Sigil or at least donated some money for it. I’m glad they’re not ignoring Romero’s existence with the franchise. Bethesda completely ignored John Carmack’s iOS app of DOOM, but I think that was because it was 32-bit.

so SIGIL is now considered an official release, interesting. I know it's made by John Romero but I wasn't expecting it to be re-released as part of an official release.

thanks, sorry im super busy atm and dont have time to read up on it. what are they patching? ive been playing the xbox arcade vrsions for years and they run fine?

- 60FPS Performance Boost (Previously 35FPS)
- Aspect Ratio Options

They previously patched the game to fix audio issues were the music would play at a slower speed and removed a mandatory Bethesda.net account requirement to play it. Which Doom fans rightly took the piss out of Bethesda for implementing in the first place.

This has online co op and deathmatch like previous console releases ?

Local multiplayer and co-op. No online though sadly.

Do we know if this will be a requirement to download the add-ons or not? I expect the performance stuff to be a patch but the add-ons, I could see Bethesda being bitches and requiring registration for those.

I would like NextGen systems to allow this at a system level in the console settings.
PS4 can do this but then you have to keep switching back and forth over and over.
But that doesn't matter when you want a game to use both analog sticks like an fps and system settings can't help you.

In 2020 we should be able to set control profiles on a per game basis

No word on that yet, but if Bethesda wants to keep it's reputation intact, they probably won't pull that crap again.

Doom 1&2 updating! Let's hope for that 60 fps option.

Game seems to run at 60 fps now, no option to change it. SIGIL's in there too in add-ons.

Finger's will be crossed. Neither outcome would surprise me though.

Called it!
From the patch notes:
"First thing is log into Bethesda.net. Once you've done that, go to Add-ons. Browse through what's available and hit the "Download" option. Then press the "Toggle Activation" button to enable it. When you go back to the main menu, you'll notice things have changed and you're playing the new Add-on."

Is it sacrilegious to play SI6IL with Brutal Doom installed?
Kinda. I played through the levels before firing them up in Brutal Doom.

It’s hard as fucking balls in Brutal Doom btw so be prepared for that.

Awesome. Yeah I think I'll play it vanilla to start. Not even going to use GZDoom. I'd feel bad and the John's of iD would probably haunt me.
