GOG Galaxy 2.0 Beta has launched

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I've been in but can't comment on much since I don't use the integration of other clients (yet). It's about as functional as before with a slightly different layout I'm not yet too fond of. The library view can be pretty hard on the PC when the covers are made to be of a relatively small size so a lot of them fit within a single page view and it's overall quite sluggish there regardless. There seem to be a nice amount of options (like have it auto-exit the other clients when you quit their games) but I don't see a way to access the community tab which on the old client took you to the forums view...

Before you ask, I haven't tried to launch the in-game overlay either. I like the option to have it show the last page you were on when you launch it rather than one of the few allowed preset selections for a default view. I'd like a "small mode" like Steam's existing convenient one for the games list...

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Out of curiosity, does Galaxy 2.0 have any sound effects in the menus? That's one of the things I like about Steam's Big Picture mode that makes it feel less like a PC program and more like a console interface.

Has nobody else here got their invite yet?
Got an invite on the 2nd, FWIW.

Seems good so far, but definitely a beta. Glad they're trying to innovate, though.
I was a little shocked to see that the integrations are using Python. Better than yet another chromium process... I think?
The suggested integrations are up on Github.

No sound effects that I've noticed - probably for the best on a normal UI.

just got my invitation! installing it now. will be back soon to share my thoughts

edit:

holy crap this is good! it's not perfect but it is still of course a closed beta. i've tested it with all the clients and they work fine. the Battle.net one doesn't seem to want to automatically launch a game though so I still need to hit play once that loads up but the others launch seamlessly. i think once they let you close clients automatically after exiting a game then it will be perfect.

i've deleted all my client icons that were pinned to my start menu and now just have the GOG icon. Looks + feels so good to just launch one client for all my games. Well, the exception is Forza 7 which doesn't show up in GOG and I don't know how to add it so I need to launch that separably but whatever.

thank you so much CD Projekt/GOG! i wonder what Blizzard, Epic, Steam, EA are thinking of this....???

So for me Galaxy 1 is one of the best UIs out there for this kind of thing - seriously Steam could learn something from them (the only thing I would change is for fuck's sake put a search box on the store homepage). The screenshots for this look to be continuing the trend of UI excellence. Seriously, their UI team are shit-hot. I look forward to playing with this as I view GOG as the good guys in this industry, the most pro-consumer company out there. I get as much as I can on gog and if something comes up on gog that I already got elsewhere I will often double-dip to get that sweet DRM-free goodness. Only with GOG do you own your games in any real sense.

I just got my GOG Galaxy 2.0 invite and just installed.
As the above post mentions, it's already been updated 3 times in the past month and 10 days. Meanwhile how many times has the Epic store/app been updated in the last 8 months?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Got my invite too! It looks great!

When viewing "All Games", I'd like an option that greys out non installed games (both in list and grid view), similar to how it looks on Steam. Or add some other distinguishing feature between installed and uninstalled games when viewing "All Games".

Another useful feature would be to tag multiple games at once.

And of course big picture mode and controller support would be great too eventually.

Haven't started a game yet from this, so will test more. Have sent through above feedback to GOG already.

I mean, all games is all games. If you just wanna view installed games then you go to the installed games view (which is the same as going to all games then adding the installed status filter). I'm not sure what's different with what you propose.

Edit: oh I get it, you want to view all games but for it to indicate what is and what isn't installed in that view rather than hide what isn't installed altogether. Never mind.

I haven't mucked around with it yet. Been out grocery shopping.
Yaaaaay

Are there more view options than grid and list? Am I missing something?

Just got mine too, it's awesome. There's an Installed Games option on the left btw, plus installed is one of the filters available.

Yeah, I noticed those. It's handy to have for sure, though I'd like some distinguishing feature in the "All Games" view for installed and uninstalled games.

Yeah sorry after I posted I realised I'd missed the point. You're right though that would be a useful feature.

I'm exclusively using GOG Galaxy 2.0 these days, it's bloody lovely. The interface is a huge step up from Steam, and it's just an absolute pleasure to use.

Sigh.... I signed up late, but I should have the damn invite by now. I'm like... one of their most dedicated customers :(

YMMV, but it's impossible to launch alternate executables for games on 2.0. I can't launch No Man's Sky in VR.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I've gotta say, manually adding games to GOG Galaxy easily fixes my biggest problem with 2.0. The process is easy (search game by name -> add to library -> link executable) and once linked it functions just like any other game in Galaxy.

The only omission in features now, which I find baffling, is that Windows Store integration doesn't exist and I can't figure out how to manually add games installed via Windows Store or the Xbox app. Considering that the Xbox integration is "official" (ie developed by Microsoft) this seems like a pretty glaring omission. I installed Gears 5 yesterday and started playing it, I'd love the ability to launch it from GOG.

It's funny that it detects it for me, but it detects it as a XBOX game.

i just want them to enable the ability to automatically close clients when exiting a game.

IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE SETTINGS but it doesn't work.

if it's not working then don't show. jeez...stop the teasing ;)

that's because if you've bought it on PC you also have the Xbox copy. that's what you're seeing.

unless you can launch it through GOG?

This update pushed it from being promising to actually being good and useful.

I'm not completely sold on how their manually adding works, because what if it can't find fan games in it's database or someone wants to add roms.

That's not a huge deal because I use other software to manage that, but it might be useful if they did it right.

I get that. Especially since I play the game through Xbox Game Pass (PC version). But, idealistically, you should now be able to add the executable by adding it manually by just adding the EXE. I'll have to try when I get home.

Their database seems to be pretty extensive.

Their API has system entries for NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.

Someone should write an integration with RetroAchievements to handle the achievement aspect of these games.

The only thing is though, if you wanted to add roms, you'd probably have to add just the emulator's executable. Otherwise you'd get an error when trying to launch it.
Good point, they need a way to pass command-line arguments to executables.

I never even managed to add winstore games to steam, I just run them from start menu. Uwp sucks and I hope MS stops using it asap.

Also speaking of integrations, here is a good resource that has the official integrations listed as well as the unofficial ones that several others are working on

This morning's update added a handful of new platform IDs as well to their API. I'm particularly happy that there is a community integration for Twitch now.

jshackles jshackles Thanks for the Twitch heads-up - picked up some freebies on that a while back, maybe now I might actually play them! For those who don't know, grab the zip file and put it in %appdatalocal%\GOG.com\Galaxy\plugins\installed - extract the zip file to a folder with the same name as the zip and you're good to go.

Same. The distinction is built into the Steam launcher versus it being its own separate Exe which is kind of annoying.

Is there a way to make it launch directly into VR? Like with a launch option? If so than I assume you could make a shortcut add that property and link that shortcut as it's own game.
