Dr. Claus

Vincit qui se vincit
Over on the Playstation Blog, a new post gives a release date and set of patch notes to the release of the New Game+ feature for God of War. Releasing on the 20th of August, 2018, God of War will introduce new rarity of gear, the ability to skip cutscenes, and stronger enemies. If you felt like the Valkyries weren't hard enough - you can give yourself even more of a challenge!

Playstation Blog said:
  • Relive the journey of Kratos and Atreus with all of your previous armors, enchantments, talismans, resources and abilities on the difficulty of your choosing.
  • Test your skills against higher level enemies; some of which might even have a few new tricks up their sleeves!
  • Unique to New Game+ is a brand new rarity level of equipment to craft and upgrade! Collect ‘Skap Slag’, a new resource to upgrade your gear to the best of the best from our finest blacksmiths.
  • Play the game in a whole new way by exploring new customization options with extremely powerful new armor sets and enchantments.
  • Finally, get right back into the action with the newly added ability to skip through cinematics in both normal and New Game+ modes once a full play through has been completed.

I always like when they add something interesting for New Game Plus. Definitely looking forward replaying this game once I'm done with Octopath Traveler.

It is definitely a reason to return to the game, especially now that it is closer to award season as well as a reason for new players to buy the game. I wonder if they will add new trophies like they did with Horizon: Zero Dawn. I already have my GoW plat, but I also want to maintain that 100% :D

  • Test your skills against higher level enemies; some of which might even have a few new tricks up their sleeves!

They "might even"? New moves, newer abilities, or a change in attack patterns? I wish they would have gone into more detail.

Now they need to fix the camera and add jumping, and the game might actualy become ok.

Is this supposed to excite people? I mean more content is cool, don't get me wrong. This should have been in the game from the get-go.

  • Relive the journey of Kratos and Atreus with all of your previous armors, enchantments, talismans, resources and abilities on the difficulty of your choosing. (Play the same content, again)

  • Test your skills against higher level enemies; some of which might even have a few new tricks up their sleeves! (This is expected for a NG+)

  • Unique to New Game+ is a brand new rarity level of equipment to craft and upgrade! Collect ‘Skap Slag’, a new resource to upgrade your gear to the best of the best from our finest blacksmiths. (Ok finally new stuff)

  • Play the game in a whole new way by exploring new customization options with extremely powerful new armor sets and enchantments.(rehashing the last point, plus new enchantments - I found these incredibly boring to tinker with and the stat boosts seemed negligible to me for the most part)

  • Finally, get right back into the action with the newly added ability to skip through cinematics in both normal and New Game+ modes once a full play through has been completed. (LOL holy shit how is this a bullet point feature for your big game update, and not an absolutely fundamental thing every game with cinematics should do? Also, fuck you for making this only available after a completed playthrough. If I want to skip your garbage narrative, let me. A lot of games do this.)

The narritive in the game isn't garbage. TAKE IT BACK DAMN YOU

I just meant that in general lol, not that this game is a garbage narrative. But honestly, it really bored me and I didn't connect with the small cast at all. I did like Kratos, but, it's God of War.

Nice! As much as I loved this game I almost completely lost interest after beating it. New Game + and skippable cut scenes are both huge additions! Looks like it is time to jump back in.

Can't wait! Replaying this game will be most good. One of my favorite games of all time right now.

Nice! Thoroughly enjoyed my first playthrough, Platt'ed and 100%. Very few games I will 100% even with a Plat, but this one was a joy.

Definitely going to dive back in on the 20th.

I don't play with the red arrow on, I listen to Boy! and Head., with a dash of gaming instincts acquired from Damon's Souls to Bloodborne.

That arrow is the evidence that the developers realized the camera alone cannot convey enough information to the player.

There'd be no need for arrows, boys or heads if it had a good camera to begin with.

The reason for it to be bad is that it is too zoomed in. The camera should zoom out whenever Kratos enters combat, so you can see his surroundings.

I played enough of it to get the Platinum trophy. I honestly do not remember what you mean by red arrow. Instead of the childish snark, you could just correct me in a decent manner.

Not snark, but it should be obvious to anyone who played the game. You just didn't sound knowledgeable and the internet is full of people who like to talk, but don't actually play the games.

Someone else got what I meant right away, see the answer I gave him.

Pardon then, it came off as snark to me. I genuinely do not remember any red arrow/guide and had no issue controlling or completing the game with the controls/camera that was given. I felt it worked perfectly fine. The game didn't need a jump button, nor did I have any issues with locating/finding enemies during a fight, or where to go in the world.

@ Thiagosc777 Thiagosc777 : The camera was my biggest fear when they first show off the gameplay but after playing the game and getting Platinum Trophy I honestly had no issue with the camera and I really didn't pay attention to the arrow, I just listen to Atreus.

The problem is that the enemies are flying all over the place. I played in the hard difficulty and it was a pain in the ass. ("Give me God of War" wasn't properly playtested, judging by the time it take to kill enemies there).

You get a couple of hits in, your son screams something and arrow turns red and you roll away in any random direction, because you can't really see the enemy and tell if it is a projectile attack or something else. Rinse and repeat. Oh, and you can spam the "son" button, so he will shoot arrows at the enemies offscreen and buy you some time.

No its actually not broken in the same way first person isnt broken just because you cant see behind you and need indicators.
You not liking a thing doesnt mean it is objectively broken, in the most basic sense you just need to put in more skill use one more skill (in rl) in positioning and keeping track of enemies which is literally just a skill used in many many games.

Just because you can beat the game on the hardest difficulty with lots of trial and error doesnt really mean you actually are good at the combat, most criticsm against the camera and against give me god of war mode come from people that didnt put enough time or effort or brain in the combat. The issue is most people thx to the camera switch didnt really give god of wars combat a true chance yeah they slug through give me god of war, but they never try to get better like they would in a DMC, NG or Bayonetta and then they blame the game for it.

First person camera coment is the perfect response to this. I did not even think about that until you mentioned it, and it makes perfect sense.

The arrow helps the player but not needed. There is good reason why the camera is the way it is, you clearly don't understand much about game development. They pulled off something that no one was able to do and without it, it would of broke the immersion and artistic style of the game. It was an artistic decision, just because you don't like that part of the gameplay doesn't mean the camera system is not good.

Analyzing games shouldn't be about "feels". It should be done based on evidence.

In a first person shooter you are not getting melee attacked from all directions, and games offer ways for you not to be exposed (like cover, walls, etc). Some games can be linear (like corridor shooters) or more open, but there are usually multiple approaches to combat.

This is not comparable to a third person hack'n slash.

The camera position and the enemy design are incompatible in God of War. That's a fact, and not an opinion. A game that implemented a similar camera in an infinitely better way was Hellblade. In Hellblade your vision is limited as well, but the enemies are slow and you have plenty of time to adjust your position in order to fight them.

Those are two different problems. The "Give me god of war" difficulty wasn't properly playtested because the time it takes to kill enemies is too long. It becomes boring. I played it for a couple of hours, but was bored to tears. The enemies not only take a long time to die, but also regenerate their health after a certain point.

Challenge modes where you die in a couple of hits exist in any game.

Wait a minute, according to you the arrow conveys no information and is purely an "artistic decision"? What!?

Then why does it turn red when you are attacked from behind?

The arrow clearly serves a practical function and that proves the camera is poorly implemented.

A better "artistic decision" would be to remove unnecessary information from screen, not add useless stuff. WTF!

I really enjoyed God of War so I definitely want to replay it but after I'm done with DQXI, VC4, XC2 DLC and Fist of the North Star.
