Teens assault family at Six Flags Great America after being asked to stop swearing

The family’s nightmare started shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday night near the fastest roller coaster at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, an Illinois town about an hour north of Chicago.

A couple and their 12-year-old son were in line near the “Raging Bull” ride during the amusement park’s annual Halloween-themed “Fright Fest” when a group of teenagers cut in front of them, authorities told the Chicago Sun Times.

The boy’s 50-year-old mother reportedly asked the teens to tone down their language.

That’s when the first punch was thrown, Gurnee police say.

One of the teenagers allegedly “sucker-punched” the 12-year-old. When his parents tried to help, at least nine teenagers surrounded them — kicking, punching and stomping until the parents and their child fell to the ground, Gurnee Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith told the Chicago Sun Times.

The Washington Post could not immediately reach Smith for comment.

Police described arriving at a chaotic scene.

“It’s a Whack-a-Mole [attraction] now,” one officer yelled as police tried to contain the fight.

“For everybody rolling up to them, they’re pretty mouthy,” another said, as they followed the teens to the parking lot.

Numerous witnesses reportedly called 911. Eventually, Six Flags security stopped the attack and the family was taken to the hospital with “significant” injuries, though none life-threatening, Smith said.

A gang of teens can assualt a family now. Moving on from beating the homeless to death I see. Lucky they didn't get shot. Adult sentences for ALL of them.

Fucking 9 on 3 and one of the 3 was a child. Worthless 'teens'. Stomping on the elderly and a 12 year-old. Fuck. That.

Seriously though, I'm not one for 'Kids Today!' and all that but this generation man. I guess it's just more visible lately.

Gregory Battle, 18, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, mob action and aggravated battery in a public place, according to police. He was released after posting bond earlier this week, according to the Chicago Tribune. His next court date is Oct. 25.

Hope the family heals quickly from their injuries. Punching a child because you were asked to not swear is in no way a proportional act.

the fight was probably stopped immediately and is just bad wording but I don't like the word eventually in there. Makes it sound like the family got beat down for a while and no one was helping. or maybe the latter did happen

When stomping is happening and then it is reported that they went to the hospital with significant injuries, I don't think you are right.

Like when I was a teen, my friends and I had a clear understanding not to do something as disgusting as this. Same with other people in my family who are teens, no one would dare think to do this. It's easy to say "teens are the worst" but honestly this is a failure of parenting ultimately. These teens are genuine assholes.

I remember when I was there back in like 2010 there was reports of someone beating up a guy in a Porky Pig suit. At the time I was like "man I was in the wrong section of the park, wish I was there to see that".

The family members, a 51-year-old husband, a 50-year-old wife and a 12-year-old son were transported to a hospital by Gurnee firefighter/paramedics with non-life threatening injuries. Apparently the 12 year-old family member was hit first. The father tried to pull the attacker off his son and was knocked to the ground. Then, the group, “surrounded him and hit him with punches and kicks.”

When the 50-year-old woman tried to help her husband and son, she was also attacked.

The fight did not expand among other people, and no one came to the rescue of the three family members. The suspects fled before police arrived. Witnesses immediately called 9-1-1 or went to get help from Six Flags employees and security. Six Flags Great America security also responded to the disturbance.

I have no problem with that. Obviously this is the kind of case that makes these sorts of policies look bad, but generally speaking I don't think it's a good idea for crimes committed by minors to follow them for their entire lives. There are exceptions, of course, but I think our general rule should be to give minors a second chance, even if some don't deserve one.

Best thing that ever happened when I worked there: a guy recruited us to take pictures for him while he proposed in front of the massive reflecting pool by the carousel.

Worst: in the morning I saw 2 guys enter the park as best bros. Saw them later in the afternoon trying to beat each other to death. I really wanna know what happened in between those 2 points in time.

That Washington Post article states they were picked up after leaving the park.

But security was trailing the group, and several police were stationed on the road outside the park, where they arrested the suspects without incident, according to the Tribune

If that were my son that got punched... I wouldn't know what to do. I'd be apprehensive to act with retaliative violence, but it would have likely ended with some of them sipping liquid meals.

Considering the parents got attacked and one of the attackers is 18 and old enough to know not to lay hands on a stranger, it would have been gloves off. I know it sounds harsh, but there is no defending his actions despite the fact that he's technically still a teenager.

Also, it's dangerous to interfere in fights like this due to their unpredictability, but sometimes someone has to step in. Fucking shame.
