The big thing for Forces with me - in that it's one of the major reasons I'm wary, though I'm still hopeful - is that, not unlike Lost World, it currently feels like it lacks particular direction or stylistic framing. Unleashed and Colours (discounting Generations as being a nostalgia fest and all) both had particular ideas that clearly manifested through the design - one was a scenic holiday, the other a Vegas-style funland in SPACE. Mania is a layered homage to both the classic Sonic games but also the time in which they came out, so in it's original content - including this opening - it's got plenty of lighthearted style. What's been shown of Forces thus far seems to be more about tossing things in, hoping that something will stick.
I agree yeah, although I'm less hopeful lol. I actually really like Unleashed for the most part.
I like both, for different reasons...
Why the hell can't you guys just stop spouting arguments as hard facts?

Tee LopesWho did the soundtrack to this game as I have not been a fan of any of the original music of the game, aside of the special stage.
Doesn't even have to be Guilty Gear-esque, just use these character designs and color palette and that's a recipe for success if the games are good.

😍
The problem is... you've seen ONE STAGE and made this conclusion.
No... two stages... both of them the first one of the characters.
We don't know if the game will lack direction or not. Maybe the other stages will be better. Dunno at this point.
Also I think it's worth noting that this video has literally zero gameplay in it and is still being very favorably received even by people who dropped the franchise years ago. It's not about 2D vs. 3D, it's one game having an outstandingly appealing tone and visual style while the other... doesn't.

Do you guys prefer the more frowny, more "watch out we have a badass over here" looking sprites or the more smiling, cutesier looking animated designs?
Everyone's talking about Tyson Hesse and his team's art and animation -- and they deserve all those props and many more for their astounding work -- but just as many shoutouts should go to Hyper Potions for their absolutely fucking stellar music in this and the other Sonic Mania trailers.
Between them on the trailers and Tee Lopes doing the game's soundtrack (and GAF's own Falk mastering it!), Sonic Mania has had some real next-level music talent attached to it and it shows. Hyper Potions has just utterly nailed Classic Sonic's upbeat, earnest, relentlessly happy vibe in these trailers.
Props to SEGA for putting these guys on the map!
Honestly, after this beautiful game I'd love a classic styled hand drawn sonic.
Holy fuck this game's soundtrack is amazingHere's some songs officially released from the soundtrack:

Damn that looks amazing. I would play that game right away.
While I'm not sure the exact 2.5D style Wayforward use would precisely work for Sonic, I do think their work on stuff like Shantae and Ducktales does provide some reference for just how good a 2D animated Sonic game could look.
I think I posted this on a different page, but I'd love to see a hand-drawn Sonic using the Ubi-Art engine. Just imagine a Sonic game with this art style using the engine from Rayman Origins/Legends...
This is how 3D sonic should have been imo.
They would need to completely rethink the objective of the game, as any obstacle could be avoided by running 5 feet to the right or left.

The developers said they're working on making more streamlined, less open stages. Right now, they just wanted to show off the general gist of their physics and movement mechanics.

Yeah not to say that it can't be done, just that whatever comes out of it might be a different game then you expect, or want. It might just be a Mario 64 vs. Mario 3D land type situation.Yeah now you mention it that's gonna be a big issue to fix.
Woah so it's not just mechanics demo? Didn't know that. Eager to see what they can cook up.The developers said they're working on making more streamlined, less open stages. Right now, they just wanted to show off the general gist of their physics and movement mechanics.
Honestly, the thing about Sonic is that it lacks identity and a vision of where it should go and this is way everyone is so happy with Mania. It started with the fucking awful Sonic Adventures voice acting and art direction.
Compare it to Mario, for instance, where despite each game having a different feel it's still Mario and the core values and identify are still there. The Sonic franchise is just schizophrenic.
Dang. Mine apparently ships out on the 15th and arrives on Wednesday. It was going to arrive on Thursday but an Amazon rep changed it to One-day Shipping. My Sonic Mania CE pre-order (PS4) from Amazon shipped! I might even receive it Monday.
After watching this animated opening yesterday, the sooner I get this in my hands the better.
I forgot again that I have an extra PS4 CE of Sonic Mania. I'm sticking with my Switch preorder though so I guess I'll cancel it.

Still not my ideal date but I guess I can wait an extra day.

Im liking Forces tone so far than recent other modern Sonic games like Colors or BooM 😷 (though Colors had awesome stages im mainly talking about humor and plot)Honestly, the thing about Sonic is that it lacks identity and a vision of where it should go and this is way everyone is so happy with Mania. I'd actually dip in and get generations on Switch, that game was one of Sonic Team's best efforts in recent years by far.Man I forgot how much I loved Sonic Generations. It should get a port to current systems.
Yes that includes switch
