Sonic Mania Animated Opening Revealed

For downloadable games that go up on Tuesdays instead of Thursday, would it be the same time of day as the latter? Really hoping for an early day release.

So this just struck me, and don't let this color your view of the game by association, but I realized it watching the intro again...

They made their own version of the Deadly Six. Except not complete trash, with much more creative theming, while still fitting in the Sonic universe. (And yes, there's five, not six.)

Holy shit was that an awesome opening. As excited as I am for Sonic Mania, this makes me really want a 2D Sonic game that uses a similar art-style. I'm picturing Sonic made with the Ubi-Art engine basically and it looks amazing in my head.

Well this looks great. Would be nice to have an awesome old school Sonic game to play with my son. We have all three consoles so I'm leaning Switch due to portability. Are there any known technical differences yet?

That's not what that means

Nor would it stop them from making 3d sonic

Also it wouldn't be as simple as selling more

You can get 2d sonic's while other people get 3d sonic's. Why not just be happy with that

Because Forces looks like horrible garbage that devalues the brand and actively diminishes all of the hard work the Mania team is putting in to make Sonic well liked again. The series would be better off if 12 Year Old Fanfiction The Game feat. Hoobastank and A Linkin Park Cover Band just didn't exist.

It doesn't even have to be all 2D, just make the 3D games moving forward carry on this tone and aesthetic because it's been almost universally acclaimed since the day it was revealed and is attracting more people than weirdos like me and you who care too much about Sonic. 😜

Do you guys prefer the more frowny, more "watch out we have a badass over here" looking sprites or the more smiling, cutesier looking animated designs?

I just like Sonic being more expressive in general honestly. He looks pretty happy in-game too when you clear a stage and whatnot.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

This is just awesome. It's unbelievable to me how much the Mania team just *gets* Sonic.

This is the type of charm and style I've wanted to see from Sonic since the Genesis era ended. I really hope this blows Forces out of the water so we can start getting more games like this that actually capture what made Sonic great.

What's with GAF and these posts, lol. The team making Forces isn't working on Mania, they're different developers, and Forces existing isn't stopping Mania from happening. So why would you want an entire gameplay-style to disappear and why would you think that'd make more Mania happen?

In fact, imagine if 3D Sonic is considered dead and instead of Taxman and co. getting to develop the sequels, Iizuka and the Sonic Team crew took over instead? Sonic 5, babies. Obviously it's not going to happen, but still, lol.

Anyway, Forces will most likely outsell Mania, but what Mania needs to do isn't "blow the other game out of the water", just prove that the audience is there for more 2D Classic Sonic. If it's a hit and makes profit, SEGA will allow new games in the formula to be made. All it's gotta do is make business sense, nothing else...

This series has gone through Sonic 06 "human kisses Sonic", if that didn't kill it, rest assured that Sonic Forces isn't going to do anything to the "brand". And Sonic has been getting new games and sales just fine over the years, I don't think you ought to be worried about that. The only thing that seems at peril here are "fans" who are really worried whether a game will get a bad score from "press website #9001" or not.

Best case scenario is Mania blows Forces out of the water and the next 3D game actually builds on its appeal instead of taking a 13 year old's Newgrounds Flash animation from 2006 and turning it into a multi-million dollar video game again.

To answer your question I like and want 3D gameplay (however it'd be hard to say I like "3D Sonic" since everything that isn't Adventure 1, Utopia, or Unleashed is mediocre at best) but would prefer Forces not exist because it devalues the brand and makes Sonic look like a joke. Because it looks really, really bad and nobody that isn't a Sonic die-hard enjoys it unironically.

Edit - who said I'm expecting it to kill the series? I'm saying it affects the brand recognition and popular opinion of the franchise. Just because Sonic 06 didn't outright kill the series doesn't mean it wasn't damaging, the fact that people still, 11 years later talk about Sonic kissing a human is proof of that.

I'm talking about how whenever I sit down at a Smash setup at a major some jabroni walks by and feels the need to inform me that Sonic Boom was a bad game and Sonic 06 is a thing that exists. It doesn't matter that they're occasionally putting out solid gold like Mania when it's accompanied by gutter trash just a few months later.

Also I think it's worth noting that this video has literally zero gameplay in it and is still being very favorably received even by people who dropped the franchise years ago. It's not about 2D vs. 3D, it's one game having an outstandingly appealing tone and visual style while the other... doesn't.

To be fair, the sprite's expression is a reaction to the player. Like, Sonic's not waiting on a taxi or an elevator, he's waiting on you, buddy. So I take the expression as pure impatience than anything really negative. Plus, as has been pointed out, there's plenty of other sprites that showcase more lighthearted fun expressions, so I don't think it's an issue overall.

If Sonic was rebooted with this art-style, using a Guilty Gear Xrd like technology, I feel like it'd only take a decade for Sonic to return to being as popular as Mario.

I agree. Excellent post with a well demonstrated point. Mania just looks like something you want to love

Doesn't even have to be Guilty Gear-esque, just use these character designs and color palette and that's a recipe for success if the games are good.

I like both, for different reasons...

Why the hell can't you guys just stop spouting arguments as hard facts?

The big thing for Forces with me - in that it's one of the major reasons I'm wary, though I'm still hopeful - is that, not unlike Lost World, it currently feels like it lacks particular direction or stylistic framing. Unleashed and Colours (discounting Generations as being a nostalgia fest and all) both had particular ideas that clearly manifested through the design - one was a scenic holiday, the other a Vegas-style funland in SPACE. Mania is a layered homage to both the classic Sonic games but also the time in which they came out, so in it's original content - including this opening - it's got plenty of lighthearted style. What's been shown of Forces thus far seems to be more about tossing things in, hoping that something will stick.

Hows the soundtrack to this, I consider Sonic 3 to be the best so if it's anything like that I might pick this up
