Magic: the Gathering |OT11| Amonkhet - Have you ever had decks with a Pharaoh?

Compared to "WotC, after Copycat happened, still made and printed a card that goes infinite with itself and forces a draw on an empty board by itself"? I mean, I know they've been messing up lately but this is a bit much given any rules person would see this is obviously a problem.

I feel pretty confident that if this exact template leads to that happening now that it's because they'll have a rules change to prevent it in the future. It seems like it would be possible to write a rule that causes the delayed-action part of such an ability not to take effect if it's caused by the first part, and it'd make it easier for them to write these cards without idiotic templating.

I'm guessing the Legendary Planeswalker - Jace thing is them removing the Planeswalker uniqueness rule entirely.

Humorously, based on what it looks like the ultimate is on that card, it seems like it probably also makes it easier for them to design around the limitation.

The idea that, in principle, leaking of information is bad for us as consumers because it screws of a marketing plan designed to sell boosters and thus leads to worse sales and subsequently to "less stuff" for us, is a very flimsy argument.

I get that it's very abstract but it is in fact very real. There are two sets that were leaked 6+ weeks in advance of release: Judgment and New Phyrexia. Both were considered above-average by general fan opinion, but both saw significantly depressed sales and tournament attendance relative to surrounding sets, pretty much entirely because people weren't as excited about them any more by the time they actually came out.

This is different from something like the Kozilek leak, which blew a big surprise but did it in a way that still got the desired effect (rampant speculation and excitement.)

Now, I agree it's not generally our responsibility to watch out for WotC's profitability or to make decisions based on their bottom line; the thing about major leaks is that they don't actually have an upside, since nobody benefits materially from them and they reduce the enjoyment of a lot of players.

I think once they are out there, they're fine to discuss. Toothpaste doesn't go back in the tube.

Yeah. There's some drama on Twitter where people are yelling at websites like "don't share them!!" and it's like... this can accomplish exactly nothing. In the era of reddit, once a leak is public it's going to be disseminated everywhere and even a concerted effort by multiple content sources isn't going to affect it.

If anything, I can only see HoD suffering from this if some players decide to skip it in favor of Ixalan

This is actually another problem and the biggest part of why they've switched from previewing a few sets out to keeping a strict lockdown on only previewing cards from the next set. (It's also a not-insignificant factor in the switch to all large sets -- if it was Kaldheim or something in that slot people wouldn't have the itch to get past it the same way.)

I outlined in my post why this shouldn't be considered en masse, I don't think anyone here considers it en masse. Nobody here is putting this up there with OGW and NPH leaks. It's really not even close.

I think the bigger issue here is that it isn't pictures of some cards, it's photos of parts of a whole rare sheet. That means there's more info out there that could show up (like, the first leak already seemed significant and we now already have way more info than that one included) and the full amount would be pretty severe.

I agree, exactly what we have now is not such a big deal.

All we're doing is confirming that Charlequin can make sets correctly.

The true silver lining to all of this.

(Seriously I felt inspired realizing I could revisit Raid to convey pirates, so I definitely feel vindicated that R&D made the exact same call.)

I can't speak for the economics of leaks, but I do know it salvaged the week of announcements for me. I'm interested in product, and we were four days into the "biggest week of announcements ever" without me seeing a card. The irony of it happening during E3 week certainly was not lost on me, either.

Now instead of being ambivalent I'm at least interested to talk to people I know who play Magic about Magic for purposes other than just bitching about the meta.

Liar's Pendulum doesn't work in Battle of the Planes. Because the card list it brings up only includes M14 cards. Great program.

Yep. Looking at both leaked images, the ult is clearly:

"Create two tokens that are copies of ~, except they're not legendary."

Otherwise, it would have had to be:

"Create two tokens that are copies of ~, except they're not Jaces."

Which reads really awkwardly and doesn't really make flavour sense.

If we wanna go waaay back, an entire Invasion print sheet wound up online.

In potato cam quality. None of the cards were legible, all it did was just leak the visual appearance of split cards. This one was actually pretty formative for WotC's marketing strategy since it marked the inflection point between the old plan of keeping mechanics and major cards silent as long as possible to the current strategy of blowing those all out upfront 3-4 weeks in advance.

I do think on net that the Kozilek leak, the split card image, and the Time Spiral playtest card leak* were all pretty positive for the community aspect -- they all generated tons of speculation and interest that kept going into the proper spoiler season. The last of those especially -- Rosewater wrote a whole article about the MTGS debate on whether the Timeshifted cards existed.

*Except for the bullshit legal consequences of course.

We were going to get card reveals tomorrow anyway, so it only really makes a difference on this one day.

there is a very palpable benefit in leaks for users y'all are ignoring. You can start picking up cards in anticipation of standard shifts now.

Get your checklands and biciylce lands when they are cheap.

Heck I'm already gonna buy/trade cocos for my fish deck in modern

Those are expected and starting to feel late to the party, if anything. I was honestly expecting some Commander 2017 spoilers or at least tangible information for the week, and I'm still not particularly pleased with their decisions regarding Iconic Masters, and will almost certainly be skipping the product.

They could exist as currently templated by just saying they have no Planeswalker type.

But I think they want to change it because its a lore-based justification, which makes no sense given how the game works.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Ignoring simply knowing more than before, which isn't marginal, I now have months to pick up playsets of checklands on the cheap for standard.

There's also no downside. Heck if leaks end up tanking MTG into bankruptcy I wouldn't be bothered by them.
But then you wouldn't have a thread to post your crummy commander decklists in

Trying to make out a couple more cards just barely legible:

Blue story card: Return all ??? creatures target player controls to their owners' hands.

Black card: Take up to ??? target creature cards from graveyards. An opponent separates those cards into two piles. Put all cards from the pile of your choice onto the battlefield under your control and the rest into their owners' graveyards.

But then you wouldn't have a thread to post your crummy commander decklists in
I'm probably gonna spend a none trivial amount of money making that deck too.

Let's face it magic is not a cheap hobby or a particularly healthy one or has good social standing. If I was forced to pick up another hobby it's hard to imagine being worse off.

That said it's incredible fun.

oh shit, I like this speculation on Jace, Planar Castaway (that's the card name)

TL:DR Bolas separates the Gatewatch in HOU and Jace ends up stranded on Ixalan with all his new memories wiped and all his old ones back, and his card is called Jace, Planar Castaway. There is a timeskip, and Jace lives as a pirate until he meets Vraska who is looking for the treasure so she can save Ravnica. The story sets up Dominaria by having the treasure tied with it, and Jace reawakens his planeswalking and reaches a new level of power (explaining his Double typeline) and goes to Vryn. We also get ties in with planes like Mirrodin and the rebuilding of the rest of the Gatewatch who are also scattered across the multiverse. This allows WotC to focus on the GW while also minimizing their role, and leaving the future up with endless possibilities.

I feel like it's a bit too late to use that name, and I'd prefer something more specific to Hour of Devastation, not the runner up to the Amonkhet title. But of course, I'll go with it if that's what we decide on.

the rules issues with ub exile guy are the best argument against leaks in the thread. if it's not leaked, wotc either changes the rules and that card is shown in the rules change post or you know immediately if it's a fuckup. now there's months of "wotc dev is bullshit" chat around that card that wouldn't exist otherwise.

Wizards employee #1: "Why doesn't Bolas just kill them instead of letting them live which may come back to bite him in the ass?"
Wizards employee #2: ¯_(ツ)_/ ¯

Nah he probably ends up trying to blast the plane and they all emergency planeswalk away without even realizing they're doing it and get scattered. It works. They can take a break and tell other stories.

Remind me again: how the fuck did Venser get himself killed when he's basically the blinking planeswalker?

Can't blink when you willingly give it up bro

Sacrificed his spark to purify Karn and reignite his spark.

Nah it's actual Venser's spark in Karn. Karn gave his to the Mending, it's not something you can "reignite" once it's gone. I mean, Karn has had precedent for this before, taking in Urza's spark from the Might/Weakstones.

Karn is my motherfucking boy. You don't mess with the Silver Golem.

lol my limited rating has taken a beating in this "Battle of the Planes" BS.

I think I lost like 40 points losing trying to force Mirrodin.

I mean, you want to solidify Bolas as a threat, you scatter the Gatewatch and kill/mortally wound someone before they escape. IE Return to Theros has not just a rescue mission of Elspeth but of Gideon, who walked back there while dying?

I'd be really interested to see where each ends up.

Jace: Ixalan
Gideon: Theros
Liliana: Dominaria
Chandra: Kaldheim
Nissa: Shandalar?

Hopefully the entire Gatewatch dies and we never see them again and Bolas is God-Pharaoh of the Multiverse.

Please don’t be disrespectful of the story. You might not care but others do.

I really like Hostage Taker's design and probably will cube it but the fact he breaks the fucking game sucks.
It'll likely be errata'd to add "you don't control". This sort of fuck-up has happened before, notably on the SoK blue Sweep cards that had -X/-0 effects... without the end of turn rider.
