WaPo: Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian foreign minister

Not just a puppet, not just a charlatan, Trump is a dangerous idiot who's easily played. Cares about making himself look good at the expense of taking the responsibilities of the office seriously. He'll continue to damage and embarrass the country and our allies in foolish ways, both intentional and unintentional, until he's out. Simple as that.

The president has the right to declassify information. But he has to formally declassify it. He can't just say shit on a whim and be like "bruh I just declassified it". Not to mention disclosing this kind of information to a foreign entity that isn't one of our allies is an entirely different matter.

Right. My understanding too.

Again, not that this will be illegal or lead the GOP to finally turn their backs on him, but this is going to make all our intelligence partners think twice about sharing information with is. This is demonstrably harmful behavior.

And remember the SHIT they came out with Clinton was found to have sent three incorrectly marked as classified e-mails? Remember the shit they spouted when Clinton was shown to have e-mailed things that were later classified?

Again, I know they aren't going to do dick about this. But that doesn't mean it isn't another leak in the good ship GOP.

From the description of the event it sounds more like Trump bragging and showing off like a dumbass than anything specifically with Russia.

One who knows nothing, can understand nothing.

Every day the rest of the world wakes up and cringes at this guy.

So Trump was being Trump and had to brag.

The IC needs to put him on an information diet like now.

The man already is on a diet on account of his ridiculous attention span. Hopefully they'll just gorge him on a tone of ancillary intel in the hopes that he forgets the more damaging details.

He has broad authority to declassify, but he has to ACTUALLY declassify before relaying the information. From what it sounds like he relayed info that none of our allies know without taking due process to even declassify it.

He does have broad authority to de-classify but the authority to impeach him is solely within Congress's discretion regardless of why.

Doesn't the President have the power to unclassify whatever he wants?

Sure, but you have to de-classify it first. Just randomly saying it isn't de-classification. There's also the fact that you can't, for example, commit treason and then say the information is de-classified now to cover your ass.

Honestly at this point, if Trump was caught doing the exact same shit that brought down Nixon, would be be impeached?

Hard to say since Nixon was pardoned before the investigation was complete. Remember Nixon was not impeached. He resigned before that could happen.

Idk if telling someone classified information as president counts as formally declassifying it lol

I think technically, so there's probably no legal ramifications for this, but when your intelligence partners get you information and tell you not to fucking tell Russia and you go and tell Russia that should probably have some consequences. I mean the big consequences are going to be that our partners and allies ain't going to trust us with information. The other consequence should be us booting him the fuck out of that office because we kind of need trust of our intelligence partners and allies.

Hmm yeah he's going to fuck up a lot in this presidency. I wonder just how much the GOP is willing to go to defend him. Believe it or not, but Nixon was actually competent. Trump isn't. He's not cut out for this position and they probably thought he'd be a useful idiot, but he isn't even useful. Not really.

Bets on the GOP not prosecuting over this?

Edit: It is illegal to knowingly share classified info with those without the appropriate security clearance

For What? This isn't even illegal, just stupid.

It might in fact be illegal. It's very nebulous with regard to presidential authority and context. You'd have to actually charge him with something to test those boundaries. But hey, if anyone is going to help us define the limits of presidential power, it should be an orange reality show trust fund baby and serial sexual predator.

I wonder when he will tell them the nuke codes?

I have the best nuke codes. Tremendous nuke codes. It's the same one I use as my computer password. The first initials of all my kids - except Tiffany - followed by Melania's Birthday and the safe word I use when I get kinky with Ivanka.

The safe word is "birth certificate," by the way.

Mccain....i fought for my country but I'll go along with the president betraying it... cause fuck the country when it comes to my party.

Why bother hacking emails when you can just go directly to the source?

When people were worried about Russia installing spy equipment in the Oval Office, I was wondering why Russia would bother, just ask ol Comrade Trump. I guess it may be a good idea in case he forgets some details, but otherwise, they're in.

The main narrative of the Clinton email scandal is that her sloppiness could result in her releasing classified information as President. However, if the President could just decide to declassify anything he wants, does it even matter? If they truly are concerned with the release of classified information, they should be concerned about the willful and dangerous declassification of information, too.

Unfortunately, the GOP didn't go after Clinton for nonpartisan reasons.

Didn't even have to store it on a private email server. What a clown. Please remove this guy asap. Pence might be an ass and evil also, but at least he won't do shit like this.

U.S. officials said that the National Security Council continues to prepare multi-page briefings for Trump to guide him through conversations with foreign leaders but that he has insisted that the guidance be distilled to a single page of bullet points, and often ignores those.

"He seems to get in the room or on the phone and just goes with it — and that has big downsides," the second former official said. "Does he understand what's classified and what's not? That's what worries me."

Lavrov's reaction to the Trump disclosures was muted, officials said, calling for the United States to work more closely with Moscow on fighting terrorism.

Christ, this is worse than Regan's whole 'put it on one page no matter how complex' policy.

You have such a wonderful way with words. :D

As far as I know the President can also determine that a particular party has need to know without necessarily declassifying or altering the classification of the information. I've never really looked into it or even thought about it with regards to non-US citizens before, though.
