"More to Scorpio than just numbers" wonder what he means?

I swear microsoft is deliberately catering to the misterxmedia crowd with stuff like this.

Yeah, they did comparisons, here's again what they wrote:

Oh windows 10 store games. Aren't they bad performers? They will need more than just one game to benchmark and compare. 1070 and 1080 may be able to brute force any performance issues, though I don't know much about how Forza performs. I know a few other windows 10 store only games are said to be bad for some reason though. Then a game designed with Xbox in mind should run well on it. Like I said, console games have an advantage of not having to focus on many different versions of hardware. For this Forza demo I don't doubt they optimized the heck out of this specific hardware, it's the reveal of the new console updgrade, it better run well.

Straight Xbox One port, + 4k Resolution, and 4k art assets.

What setting did they use for the 1070 to make it match the Xbox One settings at 4k resolution, does it have 4k art assets too? Things have to be even for a benchmark. Is there a Xbox One mode for the PC port? Ok he seems done with the Forza talk, I didn't see his PC settings. They did say similar.

Anyway, I think this is just a case of game tailor made for the hardware, vs the standard PC game port designed for many variable configurations. On multiplatform games not made with xbox in mind, or rather xbox anywhere games, I doubt it would hang in with a GTX 1070. Nvidia would be all ReggieMad.gif if the hardware was hanging in with their graphics cards and not just one demonstration.

Well, according to one financial analyst who covers Sony, PS5 will launch in the second half of 2018 with performance of at least 10 teraflops.

http://blogs.barrons.com/asiastocks/2017/03/05/how-sony-can-double-its-profit-this-year/

Sony are making money hand over fist with the PS4 and they're nowhere near reaching saturation point in sales. Sony don't want to hit the reset button, they want this generation to last as long as its viable and continue to reach new consumers each year with desirable bundles and further price drops. Scorpio will get our pulses racing in 2017 Q4 but those PS4 Destiny 2, RDR2 and Star Wars bundles are much more significant in the grand scheme of things.

Anyone else notice how much DF is parrotting MS PR talking points with their article? Like this gem right at the beginning of their coverage:

There'll be all the specs you'll need in this piece, but the reason Microsoft flew us out to talk to those involved was straightforward: the numbers, as impressive as they are, don't fully represent what the final product aims to deliver. Nor can the number of compute units and teraflops represent the passion the Xbox team has injected into this project. Microsoft has a point to prove. It's not just about performance, it's about pushing the quality of console design to a new level - in all areas

Bloody hell :(

So, how much more powerful is this than the Pro when all is said and done?

Faster CPU with many revisions to reduce overhead/latency greatly
6TF gpu with many upgrades
12GB of ram used for 4k assets, higher poly models, etc
326GB/s bandwidth for handling art assets

The gap is larger than what is seen between X1/ps4

DF
The best case scenario for Microsoft is that its CPU and GPU hardware customisation - derived directly from granular analysis of existing game engines - will produce a gulf in results even wider than those seen frequently seen in Xbox One/PS4 cross-platform releases.

Any chances of clock speed increase before it hits stores? Seems a bit early to already lock down clock speeds so far in advance.

Certainly looks interesting in theory. As an also PC gamer however, I'm still waiting for something to set it apart. From what exclusives Microsoft have, where they don't actually release an afterthought/inferior version on PC to make those on the console look "good" by comparison, I can't say I care much for them.

I mean what do you want them to do? Anyone who gets the exclusive reveal on something like this has to go through their talking points and have all of their commentary approved first. Otherwise, what incentive does MS have to help DF out? They'll just say, "nope we'll just go to IGN, Gamespot, etc. etc., since you won't cooperate with us". You know the amount of views something like this will bring.

Are you at all surprised? At least they are wearing it on their sleeve this time around, and can do so cause they do have a strong system they can finally stand behind.

Why is it needed? The mass market will consist of players who own either the PS4 Slim or the XBox S. Scorpio and Pro will sell a lot less. I'm a bit confused why both console makers even went to all this trouble. Maybe it helps them develop a console for the next generation or something, I don't know. As long as we are sticking to the same games as the baseline model, seems like overkill to me. Great for the enthusiasts of course, but just thinking are the costs really worth it.

Well say you purchased an xbox one because of the 360 days. You would be missing out on PS4 exclusive games but it probably isn't a big enough deal to get another console which is very similar. So the pro is a nice way to get access to those games while also feeling you have upgraded.

Similarly ps4 owners might just have too much money to spend.

Well it was Richard after all. If it was John, who does all the comparison pieces, it would have felt completely different I think.

Funnier to me is that on the day they release the 'numbers' they are absolutely downplaying the importance of the 'numbers' on twitter and in the article itself. Common guys.

Ultra settings on Scorpio and 1070 for that comparison. They said 1070 still dropped a few frames at that level.

Sounds good. I wonder what kind of differences it will realistically translate to with third party titles? Sub 4K titles being native 4K, higher frame rates etc.

Absolutely elated they went so far to get this console to this level.

Now the games. I'm hoping personally Mass Effect and Witcher 3 get patched to support the higher performance. Beyond exclusives MS need to show a long list of developers/games that are on board.

Well, for a start, they could put a "SPONSORED ADVERTISEMENT" notice right at the top of the article.

Well, for a start, they could put a "SPONSORED ADVERTISEMENT" notice right at the top of the article.

But why would they do that if it wasn't paid for?

Remember the benefit here is that DF gets the EXCLUSIVE. MS doesn't need to give them that AND money. If MS doesn't give them money, it's not a sponsored ad. Yes DF will make money from this indirectly via all the page views, but that's not a sponsored ad still.

Under your logic, Gameinformer would have to put a giant SPONSORED ADVERTISEMENT on the cover of each and every issue of their magazine.

What do you mean you write to the CPU? Are you writing assembly? Does the CPU support instructions that modern x86 CPUs don't support? I'm genuinely curious because information is not widely available.
We don''t write much if any asm anymore. But we still hard code for core count, cache configuration, stuff like that. Zen could have been a four core configuration, so magical shit would have to happen to make that look like 8, and that stuff is never exact.
If a new more powerful CPU came out that supported the same instruction set, in what cases would it not work? Assume that every instruction runs faster on the new architecture.
That's not a given. Older, less used, instructions can be moved off to microcode, where they run slower. Even subtle stuff. Fix a bug in the FPU and decay curves might not finish in the same time, or at all.
I could imagine a case where you're not using any sort of semaphore mechanism and you rely on parallel instructions A and B to finish in a certain order?
That happens.

What's wrong with that? He's a tech nerd who was impressed with the engineering behind the PS4 Pro and is now impressed with the Scorpio.

And to think that Scalebound could've taken advantage of all that power.
Sure, but would it have run well enough on the OG Xbox One?

The game wasn't looking that hot from what we saw of it, people aren't getting dragons and platinum, so the upsetness is understandable
