I remember one user had an entire essay penned in an OP about both Journey and TWD, how they didn't count because there wasn't a lot in the way of interactivity. It was the most up-your-ass thing.

Anywho:

Number one recommended game for me is Stardew Valley interestingly, which I've always been meaning to play. Honestly surprised at Uncharted 4 taking the prize, as someone who liked the game. Guess I feel like I heard more from naysayers than fans/people who enjoyed it. Nice to see Titanfall 2 crack the top ten.

Hitman is too low, but nice to see it in the top ten also. :p

For someone that has read this forum for many years it's super strange to see people talk about how there is some kind of Sony bias here.

If anything the bias is towards good games and Sony, after the PS3 launch debacle thought to fund interesting and good games and have endeared themselves to a certain segment of the enthusiast console market.

I can say from my perspective there is only so many times I can say the game had the best story and gameplay in the franchise ever and replaying encounters due to the dynamic movement and enemy behavior was super fun.

The opposition however seems tireless.

I love the GOTY list because I always pick up a few recommendations. I didn't vote but it's always interesting perspective to see how people vote and what the "prevailing opinion" is during the year. Loud people are loud.

Walking Dead was my #1, and honestly it probably would have just barely made my Top 10 most years. Journey was in my Top 10 too!

Putting a list of 10 games together in 2012 was like pulling teeth. I was debating between a bunch of disappointing games like Assassin's Creed III and Darksiders II for the #10 spot. ¡Ay, caramba!

I'm not sure that bias is an accurate word for this, though. It's not bias that resulted in the PS4 outselling the XB1 two-to-one this gen. Sony had the better offering.

Because owning one system is cheaper than owning two. Splintering the online player base over multiple consoles has never been good for the players, either.

I would agree there is a current Sony slant but that makes sense, it's the market leader. There are just more people that own PS4s than any other current generation system. That's going to naturally lead to more discussion of a product.

such games are

- Kid icarus: uprising

- dragon's dogma

these are good, great games in their own capacity

oh but it must be a bad year cause a small budget game like journey one

I think Xbox's nonpresence in Europe is really an issue in global forum. I think console gamers in Europe are going to be very seriously slanted towards the Sony machine. And it's a huge audience.

It's not surprising to me if you only vote for what you get to play, which for most people won't be Xbox.

I guess I should try overwatch.

Man - after seeing that list, I still stand by the fact that 2016 was a super-underwhelming year for games.

Uncharted 4 was good. But it had none of the "wow" factor of UC2.

Doom 2016 is a solid game - but nothing about it, to me, is particularly amazing or memorable.

I've put 150 hours into Overwatch - more than I have for about 99% of the games I've played. It's a great, new IP. But it's super weak on content/modes/maps - and the loot system is frustrating.

Personally, Final Fantasy XV is one of the worst games I've played in the last 5-10 years, period. I think it's utter shit. And no, that's not hyperbole. With over 2,000 games in my personal collection, it's probably in the bottom 50 that I own.

Etc, etc.

I don't imagine I'll ever look back on 2016 as a great year in gaming. It has nothing on years like '98, 2004, 2008, etc.

You do understand that is kind of representative of the gaming audience as a whole:

UC2, The Last of Us, Journey and UC4 were all the biggest GOTY winners of their years, not just on GAF.

You also have the PS4 being at 55 million.

That's a very good point. While it's still close in NA in terms of users of the 2 systems Europe is a slaughter which would certainly affect things

I'm with you. In fact if there is a clear Sony bias Uncharted 3 should have won in 2011 for example.

Incidentally, the year Sony didn't win Nintendo got the top three. NeoGAF with that damn Nintendo bias/

I see a couple of great games but mostly pretty good ones. And Kid Icarus, ick.

And if Inside won because games 1-8 on this year's list didn't exist, then yeah, I'd say 2016 wasn't very good. That's pretty much how I feel about 2012.
