The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

Northernlion's most recent Afterbirth + run is the Ultra Hard challenge... and hooo boy it's a doozy.

His disintegration into madness, frustration, and disappointment leads to one of my favorite episodes he's done... and just watching it I can completely understand where he's coming from. Looks like a gigantic pain in the ass.

I think playing Antibirth and Afterbirth+ together is affecting his mental stability. He's never been very observant, but he somehow missed that he had Josh's name mod on for an entire episode (the Pokeyman's challenge) and didn't discover it until the next episode. Then there was the run where he forgot to go to the Void after just telling himself not to forget to go to the Void lol (but at least the Void spawned in the Chest).

An actual boxed version

First retail version of Rebirth, ever?

The idea of a game being on shelves with the name "Afterbirth" amuses me.

Does this include the original game?

Agreed. I consider myself a fairly competent Isaac player and can't even imagine playing both of those concurrently for the amount of runs he normally knocks off on an average day.

(for the bolded) - I was screaming at the TV when he was collecting coins after the HUSH fight and inched his way closer and closer to the Cathedral light, lol. "THE DAMN VOID DOOOOOOOR!"

His reactions after the fact are always worth it, though.
Took me back to all of his Rebirth runs when he'd forget to drop the Left Hand before going to the Chest. :D

Rebirth on the Wii U crashed a lot and took a good second to load doors sometimes, but it was my first, real, step into Isaac and worked good enough. I had a lot of fun with it, until I decided to just move my Isaac play entirely to the PC. Improved Lost and the other nice parts of Afterbirth helped.

I wonder if the Switch port will be any good. I don't really have any reason to play it, but it'd be nice if it was at least decent and didn't crash every so often.

Today was pretty good, managed to knock out all remaining achievements except for the 2 daily related ones and It's the Key (and the 1,000,000% of course). Managed to get Sin Collector completely randomly as well, so strange but I'm not complaining.

I haven't looked too hard but didn't see the answer anywhere but are the daily achievements (Marathon / Dedication) still bugged? Couple of patches recently but little to no info on them. I've started doing them anyway, hopefully they'll retroactively count dailies done when they get fixed.

Did you happen to have a lot of black hearts on that run? There seems to be some weird information out there about unlocking this one, but it popped for me in the middle of a big battle on the chest where I couldn't tell exactly what was happening, It was during a run where I was constantly generating tons of black hearts (often several per room), and given the achievement name I assume that was the unlock condition.

Nope. I started a new normal run as Eve (to get the victory lap + zip! achievements), in the starting room I used the Razor Blade just to get WoB up and it triggered Sin Collector. Like I said, completely random and strange.

Were you fighting Envy in the chest? I've read a few people saying fighting Envy triggered it for them.

Just had the weirdest Delirium fight. As soon as I entered his health dropped to just around 10%. Few seconds later he just died. I fired around only 3 brimstone beams as Azazel and that was that.

Occasionally, he'll change to Larry Jr or Lil' Haunt and for whatever reason, it messes with his damage scaling. I think in Jr's case, the segments of his body might not have the damage scaling. Lil' Haunt is a regular enemy, and maybe it breaks on something with such a tiny amount of HP?

My surprise seeing the Lamb in the void. For some reason I thought only "regular" bosses could appear.

Also for some reason Delirium kept random dropping unavoidable bombs that would instantly explode and do damage. That was fun. I was basically on a time limit, since these bombs constantly hit me, and I had to manage to kill him in between Polaroid procs.

Beat it as ??? on a loop. That was a productive loop. Satan, Lamb, Boss Rush, Hush and Delirium all on the same run. I thought there was an achievement for beating a loop? But I didn't get it. Oh well. Edit: Looks like I need to beat the Lamb on the second loop. I'll keep that in mind

That was also my first Delirium kill. With the right items, ??? isn't really that hard. Little CHAD + Dark Bum is a slam dunk.

The wiki says this
Achievements cannot be unlocked during a victory lap.
That's not true. I unlocked the Hush, Boss Rush and Delirium achievements just fine with ??? in a victory lap

Donation Machines no longer appear.

Isn't true either. In fact I had an entire secret room full of coins and a Donation machine in a victory lap

A rerun doesn't allow achievements. A victory lap seems to work just fine with them.

Finally beat the Ultra Hard challenge I can go back to enjoying the game >_<

Me too. My two best runs prior to victory both got screwed by the 6th item room. One had Libra and the other Strange Attractor. In both cases I still made it to Mega Satan but didn't have enough to finish him off.

The run which finally did it started with Tech X and got the Nail in my first Devil room. From there it was just being super careful and not getting some stupid run-killer item randomly.

"It's the Key" was so much harder than it had any right to be, probably on par with Ultra Hard. There's no worse a feeling of picking up a coin or bomb in the Dark Room. Or you accidentally get a pickup blasted toward you or it spawns in front of a door. They really need to make a seed that prevents the items from spawning or preventing you being able to pick them up or something, or give them all that effect some of the new hearts have where Isaac repels them away, make it so you have to actively try to screw up your run or something. I know people suggest using G0NE S00N but that's such a bandaid fix to the problem, and is actively more detrimental to your run than the chance of a pickup blocking a path.

Wait, you can use seeded runs to get It's the Key?

Really didn't think it was so "hard". Did the zip + it's the key simultaneously with azazel, you just had to be a little mindful/careful, felt the "ultra hard" was a lot more pain in the ass.

Any way, the lost delirium done. Only on my 3rd try, although RNG was good to me.

Had nine lives, brimstone + black coal + a bunch of damage upgraded. Tried to squees a resistans rune out of the run, but would not manifest. Ended up with a bunch of blank runes and magician cards. Descided to try homing (IE magicians card) brimstone and got it on my second try (thx to 9 lives)

That seed unlocks an easter egg, a toggle modifier for your runs that causes all pickups and pedestals to disappear after like 7 seconds. It's useful for It's the Key because things like this can happen

ending your attempt prematurely. But the modifier doesn't care if the room is empty or not, it just starts a timer the moment you enter the room, so if you go into an item room and have to fight off enemies, or if you need to ponder whether or not you want to take devil deal items, you gotta think fast.

Curses. I wasn't sure whether or not a victory lap would count pickups from the previous run so I didn't bother trying to do it, I was trying for it on the first run, that was making it harder, limited channels for power growth. Oh well lol.

Just did "It's a Key" with Isaac. I think Jacob's Ladder + Parasite is my new favorite combo. I can only imagine what JL would look like if you had Monstro's Lung or Cricket's Body on top of Parasite.

Dont know if I am misunderstanding.
Don't think achievements works on victory laps. What I mean in my post is that I beat the Lamb under 20 min, while not picking up any consumables (coins, heart (including spirit hearts), bombs).

Any way good riddance ;)

I did a victory lap earlier and achievements worked fine. Got Hush, Delirium and Boss Rush achievements for ??? in a victory lap.

I saved and quit in the middle of it, maybe that helped?

I'm not really sure how someone would do the "beat the Lamb in 20 minutes" achievement without being on a victory lap.

You can get achievements on victory laps but you I believe you have to exit and continue your run at the start of the victory lap. I read that somewhere and did it to be safe for the zip + rerun achievements. They unlocked fine so I assume they're supposed to work normally otherwise.

edit: ^ above post suggest this also.

Hmm, maybe.. Maybe only some? I don't know :) Just know that doing the RERUN challange I got so over-powered, that I finished the Lamb in 4 minutes. Did not unlock ZIP.

I wouldn't say shame on you, the achievements are so buggy since release, it's hard to tell what is and isn't really working correctly. Sin Collector triggering randomly, the daily challenges seemingly bugged etc. That and lots of conflicting information from people trying to figure it all out too.

Goddamn, those stone chasers have no business being on the first floor of greed.

I got one with a portal and it was impossible to clear the room with those assholes body blocking everything. By the time I took some of the enemies out there were three more waves.

But they were nerfed last patch. They stop and take a breather after a bit, which lets you clean out some enemies with them out of the way.

hell yea. I just beat Greedier w The Lost too. I gave in and just kept resetting till I got a Blank Card on the 1st floor so I can break the game, but whatever!

I think you need to update. the portal disappear after like 3 enemies spawn, and the stone guys take a rest every few seconds now

I think all these patches are going to end up being larger (added together) than the DLC when it first released lol. I really don't understand how this was so rushed when they had the time they did.

They take a small rest in my version, but there are five of them. And more appeared on future waves. And they will not disappear unless you clear out the whole room before the timer clears.

I took the lazy ass path of breaking the run with another character and then respawning as The Lost with missing poster. I'm feeling no shame at all.

It's funny though because I had like 10 or more meat boys thanks to the potato peeler and I then spent the rest of the run looking for the gnawed leaf... I don't know where I fucked up but I run out of the Item Room Pool before finding it. :\
No matter though, at that point I was so powerful I still managed to kill both forms of Ultra Greed in less than a minute aha.

EDIT: I just fucked up a breaking run with the Keeper (I had the swallowed penny + the habit -> infinite money with the wooden nickel) because I accidentally hit a fire two times in a row without taking a coin before. I had been accumulating money for 30 minutes before that. Feels bad. :(

Wow, portals nerfed to death. From what I can tell they now automatically close after spawning at most three enemies. Seems like an overreaction when simply removing them from the earlier floors would have been better without making them basically irrelevant.
I like it.

What I don't like is that the updates seemed to have broken some of the most popular workshop mods out there right now.

Things I'd like to see:
Get official Antibirth support into AB+.
Cosmetic mods don't disable achievements.
Make the character editor mod work again.
Make the spider mod a toggable setting in the options, I want damage numbers damnit! :p

Northernlion's most recent Afterbirth + run is the Ultra Hard challenge... and hooo boy it's a doozy.

I enjoy that there's content that gives even Northernlion, one of the best Isaac players out there, a challenge.

I'll stay the fuck away from that challenge, though. xD

Just a heads up that the Marathon achievement for winning five daily runs in a row is still apparently busted. Didn't get the unlock this morning and others are reporting the same on the sub-Reddit and Steam community hub. Dedication is supposedly fine, but at this point I'm not touching daily runs at all until it's confirmed that both are unlocking.

Does anyone know the actual requirements for Zip!? I've done it twice now, once to the Lamb, and once to Blue Baby, and did not receive credit either time.

It pretty clearly requires more than just a time requirement.

Or it's bugged I suppose.

Not sure of the exact requirements but I did it on a victory lap to The Lamb, under 20 mins. If you're doing it on a victory lap remember to exit and continue your run at the start of each victory lap otherwise it disables achievements for some reason.

Finally got a void run done after eating ass on Hush 8 lives in a row and pulling it off at the end with one red heart and taking no damage.

I had a challenge all set up where you had to dodge with Lost and the only form of attack you had was a Dead Bird and a Dull Razor (which charged every time you enter a new room)

But it turns out Dull Razor doesn't activate Dead Bird, making the challenge impossible...

Sigh

It should, I imagine it's because you're using The Lost which has Holy Mantle, which negates damage, preventing anything from triggering on damage taken, like Dead Bird. Stop Watch I think is the only on damage effect that triggers when the Holy Mantle takes the damage.

Never going to Delirium again. I love the concept but when the only way to guarantee to fight him is to beat Hush and him just tele-fragging me with no time to react really buts a damper on the fight and my urge to face him for fun.

In the challenge, I never gave Lost Holy Mantle in the settings, he didn't have it. Unless you specifically add them, Challenges ignore normal starting items.

Wait in that NL video is that the nerf for glowing hourglass I saw people mention? That's dumb

Luckily you can still cheese the donation machine, it just requires more specific circumstances.

You need to get the hourglass in the shop, and constantly buy it, use it, buy it again, and so on. For whatever reason, that resets the timer on it.

I did it a few days ago to fill back up from 500ish to the upper 900s again.
