The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ |OT| 200 More Hours of Bad Keeper Runs

In addition to those already mentioned, The Host unlocks tech.5, Demo Man unlocks the Chaos Card, Cursed unlocks Credit Card, and When Life Gives You Lemons unlocks the Card against Humanity.

I can't imagine life without Pethro or Algiz or Death's Touch, but those challenges are stupid hard.

i don't have death's touch or pethro.
gave waka waka a try... beat it the first try with a half of a heart left lol.

Finally beat Greedier without explosion immunity or breaking the game.

All it took was Blank Card + Sun Card + the Habit + a bunch of heart containers.

I've come around to the idea that if I'm breaking the game to beat Greedier (which I have been, by and large), that it's easiest just to start with Isaac every time. The D6 makes it more likely to start the game breaking, and once the game is broken you can get Clicker and pick your victory character.

Feels even more cheesy that way, but who would ever play Greedier for fun anyway?

um, I had to pick up one single item - Maggy's Bow - to finally get Platinum God (never bothered with it but this time I decided to go for it since I was missing only a few unlocks) and I broke a Greed mode run with the classic Blank Card + Two of Diamonds.
now the issue was that I reached the point where all the items were Breakfast but the item I needed never showed up. I had Chaos and I know that spawns Breakfast a lot, but I picked Breakfast something like 100 times and I still couldn't find any new item so I assumed there was nothing left.
aren't these runs supposed to have all the unlocked (and locked, if you pick Chaos) items available in it? If so I have no clue why Maggy's Bow never showed up.

also, you don't need to complete all the original 20 challenges for the Platinum God do you? I'm missing 3-4 which unlock useless runes and trinkets.

after this I'm only missing that fucking boss rush with the Lost and I should have Real Platinum God as well.

The way Isaac's items work is that there is a list of item pools, like Item Room, Boss Room, Devil Deal, Boss Rush, Library, Angel, Shop, and several more which are for less obvious reasons.

In a normal run, if the pool it's trying to pull from runs out, it will start pulling from the basic item room pool. Only when the item room pool runs out will you start getting breakfasts.

Chaos, on the other hand, picks a random pool, then it picks a random item from that pool. If the pool has nothing available, it will generate Breakfast, not pulling from any other pool first.

As a result, Chaos will give a ton of Breakfasts because you will end up with smaller pools completely empty, while the biggest pools will only rarely be picked to generate an item from.

Maggie's bow is unfortunately in the largest pool only. So eventually the odds of getting the specific item you need is astronomically low.

When I break Greed Mode with a specific item in mind, I never take Chaos until after I have that item, because what it's mainly adding is the Devil and Angel pools, at the cost of breakfasts galore.

What items are lost when starting a victory lap?

A random few. Doesn't appear to have a set number or any specific items. Might be percentage based. Saw a streamer lose like 5 items, while I only lost one item between three victory laps when doing the RERUN achievement because I had like 5 items due to debug console cheese.

Also found out what RERUN apparently unlocks. Lets you rerun any completed run, even if you don't go to the Dark Room. The Main Menu's "continue" option turns into "Rerun" or something like that when you win a run. Haven't really tested it, though.

Finally had a victory lap run. I think I've reached a level of awfulness where I can't beat any run unless I get Tech X early on and just use that to coast to victory.

Is there any ETA on when they might fix it so we can get achievements with cosmetic mods? Those are the only ones I want to use but I can't bring myself to use them too much when I know I won't get anything for it.

I like a lot of the added stuff but the first 2 floors are way harder now, I'd argue too hard, making it more difficult to get a good run going and almost shutting down bad runs you'd otherwise give a chance.

yep! In Rebirth I gave every run a chance and almost never used the restart button. When I started playing the tougher characters or challenges on Afterbirth, I started to make sure I got at least a decent start. On + I hit the r button whenever the first treasure room doesn't hold a tremendous upgrade. It just isn't worth it. It is very unlikely to turn a mediocre start around. More often than not I even restart on floor 2 or 3 when I get the feeling that my run ist taking a nosedive.

I feel that everything got significant harder: less items, (big) rooms cram-full of enemies, among them so many champions, so many worthless items, horrible death trap rooms - it often times feels like a constant onslaught to wear me down.

that doesn't look to bad.

the stone guys don't hurt you... so just move and shoot the last guy?

oh there are spiders as well, that is worse but still you can just pop out and shoot.

I should have added that on the top half were enemies as well. For example a champion boil that was almost unkillable because when it was half down the stone fatties had swarmed me. And there were more of the white shooty thingies popping out which can hit you while the stone fatties shield them from my shots.

One concern I have is with the Booster Packs and adding item descriptions.

How future proof with this be if they add it in February, going forward? It'll be another aspect of the game that needs constant updating, and I can easily see it falling behind rather quickly and never really getting properly updated when they stop updating the game in a year or so.

As long as it's optional and off by default, I'm fine with it.

really this.

I mean the first few runs are better without... but after 100 runs I really want a quick description of things so I don't have to look up to make sure I am not about to make a horrible mistake.

lol. Good luck. It took me breaking the game via the shop to kill him, and thats after more than a day's worth of playing Keeper exclusively.

Spent today playing (read: resetting) nothing but The Keeper, and what a soul crushing experience it was / is. Had a handful of really decent runs just lose to completely inane mistakes, a could of runs got to Hush and nearly had him, hell one of them, a Tech X run, I killed Hush, but in his dying breath he fired his eye lasers while bullets filled the screen, I had no time to reach my dropped penny before dying.

The Caves, in particular the Flooded Caves are an absolute run killer for him it seems, every problem added in AB+ gets exacerbated while playing The Keeper. His low speed and low fire rate just can't do anything when rooms are filled, or are being filled by portals, champions in practically every room and all of them trying to hug your face off. He can't hold any of it back, so even what was normally a decent defensive start like Holy Mantle can have trouble. It feels like, unless much more rebalancing occurs, he needs more invincibility frames after getting hit, so baking Blind Rage into his character, because it became annoyingly frequent where I'd drop a penny on hit but couldn't reach it in time before dying because so many enemies are obstructing the path now.

I also really hope they increase the chances of or adding another method to reach The Void, having an awesome run with Godhead clearing through the Chest and not having a shot at Delirium just feels so dissatisfying, all that effort for nothing.

edit: I have a run right now sitting outside Delirium's door as The Keeper, Tech X, 99 Money = Power, other damage up's, Holy Mantle, Swallowed Penny. I got him to half health, he was turning into Mama Gurdy, summoning spikes everywhere, turned into a lil haunt and bum rushed me so fast I couldn't pick up a penny before dying. I resurrected from Guppy's Collar but now I just straight up don't want to fight him, the fight is just so bad all this effort is likely wasted.

edit2: that run died :( Delirium insta stomped me from half a screen away as Monstro while I was at the top of the screen, then transformed into Mama Gurdy and trapped me inside her, he had like 20% health left. note to self: don't hug the top of the screen in the Delirium fight because of Mama Gurdy / The Haunt

Fuck I had the dream. Greedier mode with 2 of Diamonds + Blank Card but then I got curious about a new item and picked up Clicker. Didn't realise what it did at first but it apparently
turned me into Maggy. Fortunately I was just Apollyon instead something crazy like The Lost or The Keeper but it ate The Void which had the Blank Card in it. :(

How did it do that when you have to be holding the Clicker to use it? Your other active items have to be on pedestals and thus are incapable of being eaten by the clicker.

The Lost isn't fun.

Every single expansion I have to play as the Lost once again I die a little more.

I couldn't disagree more. Once I got the Holy Mantle for him, The Lost became one of my favorite characters to play as. Free Devil Deals alone is enough to make him insanely fun to play as (which is probably why I'll never beat Mega Satan with him).

Keeper is the real dud of a character. At least Lost has a decent fire rate on tears and Holy Mantle. If you don't get Swallowed Penny early on, Keeper is just a nightmare to play.

oh, that makes sense. thanks for clarifying.

I still have to finish Greed mode with some characters so I'm gonna try to break the run again, and this time without picking Chaos.

I picked up the Clicker to get it marked off in the item record, then swapped back to The Void to eat it and use it at the same time. I learned after the fact when I looked up the item was that the Clicker will eat your most recent item, which in this case was the Void. I should have tested the Clicker by actually using the item directly but I was worried it would teleport me or otherwise separate me from The Void on the pedastal.

I'd agree... if bosses hadn't become bullet hells with randomness included. Megasatan was bad enough will all the shit flying around the screen that makes it really confusing. Ultra Greed was a bitch because it didn't matter how good of a run you made when you got there, it would always take forever to beat him anyway.

I've yet to play the expansion much, but most of what I've seen is that the game, once again, just gets harder. It's not very interesting.

PS: I beat Megasatan as the Lost when he didn't have the mantle. I must've died 400 times. I got soured.

Speaking of bullet hells, it's kind of funny, but in a way, I find Hush easier to dodge than Stain. I've only fought Hush like 5 times and I'm sort of used to him, but for some reason I always take a bunch of damage on Stain. I've killed Hush without taking damage twice now. Stain, though, unless I nuke him down instantly, or it's the variant that doesn't shoot, it's not a fun time.

Maybe it's because there's more room to dodge in the Hush fight, and one of the patterns just has you standing still.

Oh wow, I get it now. I never would have thought of that interaction. That does stink.

Add another item on to the pile of "avoid eating this" with the Void.

Found out earlier that Strange Attractor + Epic Fetus makes it so that enemies are pulled toward the landing spot of the missile, which is nice.

I see the latest patch fixed the graphic filter option. Only took them a week, but whatever...it's nice to be able to play AB+ with smooth graphics again (even though I don't totally hate the pixelly option)

Is the filter supposed to emulate the flash style of the original?

I really like Rebirth's sprite style with the really thick outlines and simple colors.

Yep...when Rebirth first launched alot of people complained about it not looking like the original so they added that in to keep the old school players happy :) Now I think about it, it may have been there at launch after receiving negative feedback from the pre-release footage.

I don't mind the mechanic as it is now. It catches people not paying attention, without being trolly. Because they replace normal chests occasionally, as well, it also reduces the amount of "free" resources without really negatively impacting the game.

At launch, it was pretty absurd. My first run with Apollyon gave me two mimics back to back for my first two chests and I was just sitting there wondering if that was something specific for Apollyon.

I was personally fine with it after the first change in color, but hadn't even considered colorblind players. The blood splatter hopefully brings the annoyance with the chests to a close... but it doesn't make it feel any less half-baked as an expansion.

Apparently portals now fizzle out after spawning 1-5 enemies as well, thank god.

I've never used the filter, but I'm glad the people that played with it on didn't have to wait a year for a fix, like Dr. Fetus' garbage damage lasted.

So, I played with Apollyon on hard and easily made it to the Lamb and MegaSatan. Today I'll try to get Boss Rush and Hush done.

I'm so not excited to play Ultra Greedier with The Lost.

Finally, Delirium killed with everyone. Had a breaking run from finding Restock in a shop and just bought everything I could. I changed my tactics, my goal was no longer to beat Hush but to focus on killing Mega Satan, the cumulative percentage chance of a portal opening from killing everything beyond It Lives made more sense, plus the build and speed requirements of getting to Hush are just too steep a price. The Keeper with a swallowed penny is almost guaranteed Mega Satan with a single Sac. Room, or even with bombs and a supply of money in your donation machine, plus you can get some really nice items from 7 hits to the spikes.

The run tried its best though, when I got to the chest I found Dead Cat and Greed's Gullet in the chests. And I had 70 odd coins, I'd read about Greed's Gullet being finicky but I tried it. Dead Cat put me to 1 coin, Greed's Gullet did nothing, so I was scared. I remembered I had Glitter Bombs + Scatter Bombs so I used them to farm up some coins in an empty room and got myself up to 4 coins of health. It's absolutely magical to see 4 hp + 9 lives as the Keeper, I couldn't lose now. Portal opened after Mega Satan, into the Void I went, exited the run and continued as instinct in case of a crash, bam, I died, 1 hp and 8 lives. Greed's Gullet is still badly broken. Anyway, the build was strong enough to clear things effortlessly, and I had an Algiz rune, so once I noticed how much damage I was chunking off Delirium I just popped it and won.

Also, Euthanasia is absolutely awesome. Killing spike blocks, turret heads, Peep's / Bloat's Eyes. I had that + Sulphuric Acid, the tears just tore rooms apart, literally, rocks, walls, doors, blue and purple fire, angel statues, everything.

Really glad that's over, but I'll be honest, once I stopped focusing on Hush I was having a bit more fun with the Keeper, takes too much to get going but when he does he does it well.

I'm doing Lost Greedier runs right now. has it always been the case that the little spikey button the middle doesn't damage you? I totally don't remember that. but being able to take each wave one by one is nice.

edit: just ran into a Devil room that had Ouija Board (spectral tears) and Spirit of the Night (flight+spectral tears) with The Lost
-________________________-

edit2: had an awesome run (Godhead+a bunch of other dmg ups). died with The Lost on the last boss of the last floor before Ultra Greed. respawned with Judas' shadow. had The Little Horn. beat Greedier without getting hit with what was essentially The Lost without actually being The Lost. fuck everything.

9 characters done for Greedier. Samson, Cain, Judas, Maggy, and LIlith to go.

My opinion of this mode has not improved. I'll be so glad when I am past this.

edit: incidentally, the ability of clicker to remove items is super useful when breaking Greedier. I can pick up anything short of Missing No at that point and just remove it. Bye bye Magnet. So long Bum Friend.

Rerun doesn't count as a victory lap for achievements :(

Thought I could do the Chest and still take the build and get the victory lap achievement via the rerun menu option, but nope.

I am not that experienced in this game so I would like to ask some questions:

  • I have beaten mom's heart like 4-5 times on normal. I know the game can continue and there are more floors and bosses but how do I access them? Everytime I beat mom's heart I go to the chest, shows cutscen and then menu screen.
  • If I beat the game on hard will it make any difference after mom's heart or is it exactly the same as normal mode just harder?

IIRC you need to beat Mom's Heart 10 times to make it so the deeper floors are always available but you should still have a chance for them to appear before that. Hard mode doesn't make a difference other than for unlocking co-op babies.

Just finished Greedier mode with Cain. I wasn't looking forward to fighting Golden Ultra Greed, build wasn't that good, but whatever happened he died instantly after transforming, he did his little animation of coming back to life then died, not that I'm complaining, a free win is a free win lol.

Also, unrelated but Jacob's Ladder is amazing in Greed(ier) mode, my Maggy run had tons of tears up, Incubus, double vision and eventually Death's Touch but I could basically just fire at a wall and pretty much everything died, a lot of fun.
