iOS Gaming September 2016 | I don't have unlimited money

Speaking of Ember, it finally got a review over on TA by Eric Ford --- 4.5/5.

Well deserved if not a 5/5.

I personally am enjoying it much more than trying to play Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale on iOS. And Titan Quest on the classic ARPG side.

Caught up on some podcasts over the weekend that I have missed over the past few weeks. I'm cringing at hearing some of them react to Mario at the Apple conference by saying that Nintendo is "finally bringing quality to mobile games" and that mobile gamers will "get a breath of fresh air from a quality gaming app" (Player One podcast). Smh.

Agreed. Titan Quest was fun for a little while but the performance and finicky controls did not make it last long on my device. Ember shows how RPGs should be done on mobile.

Gave the game a go. Made it to stage 5, when I had to force-close the game because it got stuck in the post-game screen in which you can attempt to capture a monster. Probably an issue with lost internet connection when trying to capture it.

The game looks cool, and I could see myself playing it, but there are two pretty big issues for me.
One is the amount of data the game consumes. It was 30MB for a 30 minute session, which I think is A DAMN LOT. What are you guys downloading or sending to the servers? I didn't see any add, which makes it still more glaring. Is it all data from the game session?
Typically I play 1 hour a day while I'm commuting. If this translates into 60MB a day, say 20 days a month, this adds up to 1.2GB per month. I'm on a 2GB data plan, I just won't be able to play the game it these numbers hold.

The other one is how slow is the game between game states. "Loading menus" is not really a loading message I would like to see ever.

Finally, and this is a pet peeve of mine, I hate it when the music and sfx options are locked until you finish the tutorial.

As I said, the game looks pretty cool, I like the animations and the game aesthetic, and looks like there's quite some depth, but the first issue I mentioned above is basically a game stopper for me. Hope you can give it a look or reconsider some decisions related to the data the game needs to get/send.

Check your free to play games on Settings > Data Usage and see by yourself you their drain your data plan. You can turn them off (GameCenter doesnt get affected by this) and you wont see any ads or data mining anymore. Work like a charm

Saw that Bit.Trip.Runner 3 was announced today but am not confident it will come to mobile, which sucks as I loved the mobile port of the 2nd one.

Considering they never came out with the "coming soon" worlds in that version that figures into my calculation that the new one won't be ported even if those type of games are perfect for mobile.

Looks gorgeous too

That's... disappointing. Was hoping for a sequel for Legacy. The structure of the original is already pretty dated and was cloned to death.
I can't think of other RPGs that did Battleheart's style. A 2D party doesn't make it that. It's the synergy between classes and abilities, the charming aesthetic, and whatnot

Really liking Pathfinder Adventures. Never played the board game, but can already imagine the headaches of shuffling and keeping decks separate. Works really nicely on a plus-sized phone, though some text is pretty small (most is fine).

Your characters each have their own small deck, which contains their weapons, armor, spells, items, etc. The deck is also their hit points - run out of cards and you die (you discard when damaged).

Each scenario has multiple locations to explore, with different rules affecting them, and each location is a deck. Location decks will have monsters, items, traps, etc.

There is a story to each module (made up of different scenarios) and a reason to be on each quest. Quest rewards let you permanently improve your character, or give you new cards (weapons, spells, etc), give gold, and more.

There are a lot of characters to unlock, each with different decks and abilities, a decent amount of scenarios (more on the way), and 3 different difficult levels for each, possibly having harder rules and different rewards.

I've been playing for awhile and haven't had to spend money yet, though you will have to "grind" to earn enough to unlock everything. I don't consider it a grind, I'm just playing the game.

If you've never played a complex board game or tabletop rpg, you probably want to pay good attention to the tutorial, but as a vet of both it's no problem. Really well translated to mobile, too.

Just got an iPhone. Whats the best endless runner?

+1 for jetpack joyride; it has a lot of carrots to keep you interested in that one more run.

I've had to resort to doing this in some games, after realizing how they murder my data plan.
But yeah, doesn't work with this game. :p

I tend to thing that, instead of paying real money for a game, I'm paying for the game straight with my data plan.

There were quite a few clones. None matched Battleheart itself -- although the tower defense/RTS/Battleheart style combat mix in Tiny Guardians came close to capturing that charm.

Nightgate, which just came out a few weeks ago, is on sale for $1.99. You guide a little dot through various playing fields to hit all the marked spots without running into other red moving objects and lines.

It's a very cool ambient puzzler that is perfect for chilling out to.

Think I need to make a twitter account that posts replies that show how clueless some gaf users are about mobile in the gaming section.

Pretty sure most Gaffers wouldn't figure out that you're supposed to be mocking the posts. And you'd probably get a lot of replies in the vain of "but it's true!"

is Monster Hunter Unite on iOS worth picking up? i only got a iPhone 5s to play it on.

It's absolutely fantastic on iOS, but the 5s is way too small for it. I wouldn't play it on anything smaller than a Plus. The plus is actually my favorite way to play. Tried it on my Mini when it first came out and loved the bigger screen real estate, but felt the buttons were too spread out. It's pretty perfect on my 6s+, though.

Gave you some ammunition over there :p

lol.

arrgh don't say that. You will make me want to go + when I upgrade.

Why Static Sky is not yet on my device and it's awesome?

More_Badass, I summon you and your media badge to investigate on the matter :p

A glorious gameplay video and a date announcement would be welcomed.
No pressure.

Tonight :)

This game looks great! It'll definitely be on my devices when it releases.

A wonderful read imho about similarities (or blatant copycat) between No Man's Sky and Out There, like many noted long ago.
Scandal that almost no one mentioned that, but I'm so glad sales of Out There were up anyway.

The UI and inventory management of NMS is a poor budget version of what Destiny uses. I'm more inclined to think that was the primary inspiration of those elements.

Zip Zap is really fun. It's like Incredipede's younger less complex cousin. Smart varied uses of a one-touch control scheme, a simple colorful aesthetic, and nicely polished all-around

Any title suggestions for October? Was going with:

iOS Gaming October 2016 | Now with 400% more flying monkeys

But that joke seems like it's played out already

I got it on my 6s and it's almost unplayable. You can't read anything and it's either too far away for some decent fov or stupidly close so you can actually see the game.

Go to your iphone setttings. Go to:

General > Accessibility > Zoom and turn to "on".

Now you can double tap to zoom in text. It's a total godsend.

Also change Zoom Region to "Full Screen"

Cyro and Sometimes You Die were both excellent, so yeah check this one out
I love that guys sense of style. His design is always so clean. I mean, the fact that he's used an em dash in the game name says so much about the way he works and thinks. Bravo.

I never played Cyro, but I'm a huge fan of GBA Kuru Kuru Kururin which is the obvious inspiration. Does it add anything new to the concept?

I never played Kuru Kuru, but I like Cyro a lot. For one, its aesthetic was both charming and minimalist. The game had some interesting level design, and introduced many different mechanic throughout
