Hello Games is Sean's company. He owns it. He sold his house to fund it. He just delivered the 5th biggest video game launch ever, across all platforms (#2 on PlayStation, behind Uncharted). You think the best business decision is to sell his company because he upset somebody on a forum?
Where is this 2nd biggest release ever info coming from?

Alright, so since I didn't end up getting the game due to the bad PC port I can't file a complaint myself, however I would encourage anyone here who can't get a refund or is upset at the situation to file a complaint through econsumer.gov. I have made a list of all of the info that they ask for to make it easy for those wanting to file. This should only take you a couple minutes at the most if you don't have to search for all of the info that I have provided. If I made a mistake or something could be better then by all means please let me know or feel free to reformat it yourself if you want.

For the past several years Sean Murray of Hello Games discussed his company's game, No Man's Sky. At gaming conferences, talk shows, other venues and media outlets he repeatedly gave information about the game, revealing more and more about No Man's Sky. After the games release a few weeks ago, it became glaringly apparent that he had blatantly lied about many features, including some key features of the game, as shown in the list of missing features below. What has been presented about the game by Sean Murray for the past several years, and the information from Hello Games website is blatant false advertising. The game is not as described, and this company has repeatedly lied and continues to lie about the true contents of their product. This is a list of a lot of the missing features that were advertised and sources from when they were advertised to be there: https://archive.is/OCNdQ

Thank you for this. More people should have this information.

Also PSA: refund for legitimate reasons. Don't refund as a protest. That does not solve the problem.

I truly wonder what Hello Games future will be like in 3-5 years. Has Sean Murray done unrepairable damage to Hello Games? Will gamers trust him when he has a new game to show off and sell? I can only imagine the questions the gaming media will throw at him for his next game...

How long was Molyneux able to keep shovelling bullshit at crowds and have people eat it up?

I actually believe if they patch to fix things and Sean gives real and honest interviews about what he said and what was delivered there is salvation. People respect reflection and honesty.

Will this happen? No one knows.

Leave it to gamers to taken things too far/seriously.

Not only are people taking it too seriously, but too personally as well.
Some people are acting like Murray was their best friend and now they feel betrayed.
It's easy to get invested in these things, and Murray was a charming guy during interviews and such, so I suppose it's natural to feel some attachment.
Games do wonderful things with taking us to a different place, and the potential NMS had to do this was huge.

But I think, in order to mature as a hobby/community, we have to learn when to break away and to just leave well enough alone.
NMS is considered to be a faulty product. It crashes; didn't deliver on promises; doesn't appear as advertised; etc.
Usually with a faulty product you work out a refund and that's that. It's you versus the retailer, and 9/10 it ends in a civilised/satisfactory manner.
But with games (and this game in particular), there's this horrible "us versus them" mentality.
Everyone and their mum feel the need to take their fight to the internet, shouting their woes in every related forum and comment section.

Maybe people need to feel like they're right? Like others share their disdain? Like that's the only way to validate their claim?
We have angry reviews, the honest trailer, Twitter campaigns, countless images and posts mocking Murray and his team...
It all feels like a witch hunt, and the responses from some people have been downright childish; constantly trying to one-up each other, seeing who can get the nastiest burn.

And everyone "scheming" to get a refund just heightens awareness and makes it into an even bigger joke.
Now it's like a challenge to see who can appeal the loudest and have the most conviction when making their claim.
It's a little bit pathetic and I think a lot of people are setting a bad example. Just learn when to step back and get some perspective.
If you're truly unhappy with your purchase and you feel you have the right to get your money back, then there will be a way to do so.
But it won't be by spreading vitriol and vilifying the developers. In the worst case that they were flat-out dishonest, they may have done the consumer wrong, but they haven't done you wrong.

Seriously. My take away from this who debacle is that I will likely not buy any HG games in the future and will take anything Sean Murray says with a huge grain of salt (Molyneaux levels). I'm not going to cast judgment on a group of people who worked their asses off on a product that was way oversold by their boss.

I suppose by this metric, everyone that worked on GODUS and Broken Age are also shitlords. /s

Not aiming this at you, but generally to everyone. Can we stop pretending the rest of the Hello Games team had nothing to do with the marketing, and it was all on Sean Murray. Obviously he was driving the train wreck, but there's plenty of quotes from the rest of the team from The Atlantic article

“There is a list of objects that animals are aware of,” Artificial Intelligence programmer Charlie Tangora explained. “Certain animals have an affinity for some objects over others which is part of giving them personality and individual style. They have friends and best friends too. It's just a label on a bit of code—but another creature of the same type nearby is potentially their friend. They ask their friends telepathically where they’re going so they can coordinate.”

Artistic director Grant Duncan recalled roaming an alien planet once shooting at birds out of boredom. “I hit one and it fell into the ocean,” he recalled. “It was floating there on the waves when suddenly, a shark came up and ate it. The first time it happened, it totally blew me away.”

I agree with this. I think it would be healthy to take a step back and try to find a better balance of right/wrong.

I'm wondering if a separate one needs to be filed for product that doesn't work right because of all of the crashes and glitches. I can't find that category anywhere on the website and am wondering if it falls under false advertisement as well since the product isn't shown as broken in the ads for the game.

Should I have my wife amend the comments and write a bit about the crashes and glitches as well or go ahead and make a second one?

Molyneux I think had help in that his promises weren't in the internet age until recently (which is when he finally faced real backlash) and that a lot of his games that underdelivered were at least still fairly solid games overall. The guy was involved in some flat out classics.

You are an absolute loser.

What a nice thing to say :/

To VlaudTheImpaler for his post above: nice work!

edit: I also wish people would stop acting like false advertisements is perfectly fine and not against the law whatsoever because it is. Google around, there is regulations that are meant to protect people against false advertisements, misleading claims, etc. :/

Yeah id definitely be up to play Fable or Dungeon Keeper again over NMS. At least people have learned their lesson with Molyneux now.

Wait, are you trolling?

Eh, might not be that Murray oversold it. The employees could well have thought they were going to have something done by launch but didn't, and didn't say it to the boss. Happens in businesses all the time, could well have happened at HG too. Sean could just be like one of those bosses that doesn't get his hands dirty nor have an accurate idea of what his team is doing.

Are you saying Murray should get a pass because he's an incompetent boss?

I don't approve, but if you're going to go ahead with it, you might as well fix the typos so you'll have the best chance of being taken seriously.

Especially if people are cut and pasting.. doing so with errors will become increasingly apparent.

Wait, are you trolling?

No?... I mean, can you find the section? I assumed there would be two different selections, one for false advertising and one for a faulty/malfunctioning product. If you see it then please let me know. I am sick atm so I very well could have missed it.

Crap, that's my fault, she told me there where a few because she wrote it fast and she usually goes over everything she writes. That last part is what I wrote but I took over the keyboard and forgot to fix them.

What would you change other than the typos?

EDIT: Crap, didn't mean to double post.

perhaps the floor of hello games' office was covered in broken glass, thus murray could not traverse to the other side of the room barefoot to check on the progress of his 14 employees without sustaining grievous injury.

I would change the idea of wasting peoples time by submitting complaints that are going to go nowhere. While there's a debate to be had about refunds, that Reddit post (which is full of editorialized inaccuracies among the stuff that is actually correct) and the idea of submitting complaints is kind of bunk.

This just reminds me of the people who submitted complaints about the ME3 ending.

"false advertisement as well since the product isn't shown as broken in the ads for the game"

This is silly. There is no need to submit a complaint to the BBB because a video game has technical issues. This is getting ridiculous....

Where did I say he should be completely absolved? Tone it down with the hyperbole, I was merely suggesting he might not be the one solely responsible for the direction the game didn't go.

So you are saying that people should only talk about it only for nothing to come of it? No, something needs to be done. This is a way for something to actually come of the situation other than hot air from either side. I'm tired of the industry being this way and this may provide a means for people to foster some sort of change. HG has been given plenty of time to come out own up and try to clear as much of this up as they can and start the healing process. They chose to keep silent. I am not.

Dont know if people are getting this message, but here it go.

Yeah, that has been pretty standard. Either keep trying or you could follow the guide I posted to file a complaint to the BBB or if you are in EU or elsewhere econsumer.gov which the BBB will just redirect you to anyway.

Yeah, you actually have a point there. I saw that Grant Duncan is a co-founder for HG along with Sean when I was looking into the company. Thing is it has been Sean putting his face and voice on everything so people are going to direct everything at him. I would have put Duncan in with the complaint tutorial but it only gave room for one person. :/

So, Update on Steam breaking UK law.

This was my last message to them:

"Your refund policy does not supercede UK law unfortunately. You are breaking the law stated here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rights-for-consumers-when-buying-digital-content

Specifically this section: a 30 day time period to return faulty goods and get a full refund, the law was previously unclear on how long this period should last
after 30 days, retailers have one opportunity to repair or replace any goods and the consumer can choose whether they want the goods to be repaired or replaced - if the attempt at a repair or replacement is unsuccessful, the consumer can then claim a refund or a price reduction if they wish to keep the product

As I have previously explained that I do not wish to keep the product as you cannot repair or replace it, You are obliged by law to offer me a full refund.

Thankyou."

To which they replied:

"We have reviewed your request and your purchase does not qualify for a refund. As previously stated, there has been inaccurate reports in the community regarding refunds on this title.

We are unable to accommodate your request for a refund."

Livid. Almost new thread worthy livid. I cannot believe their wanton disregard for the law.

But only 13 people made the game you shouldn't have refunded it think of all the money they won't have now, you should have just kept playing your busted save file, you should feel honored to halve given the glorious lord Sean Murray your 60 dollars. I bet you even played for over 20 hours before that happened. You should just be happy with what you got man I can't believe thieves like you got away with this. How could you live with yourself knowing that you returned a broken product? You should have just kept playing til your PS4 hard drive exploded then went and bought another PS4 and nms again because it's the best thing ever. Hell I think everyone should go buy 3 more copies to help hello games with the refunds let's show our support
but what do you do

I think if people are genuinely interested in taking a stand against what they perceive as the industry crossing some lines, then I'd advocate for something more generic and less about No Man's Sky.

At one point things could have moved ahead without having the stigma of being lumped in with people exploiting refund systems, dog piling, and borderline harrassment. That's where things are rapidly heading which can sabotage things.

Look at stuff like the #4theplayers campaign.. organize, make a website, approach industry leaders and engage them, get statements from publishers/developers and hold them to their word, make them aware you want more transparency, responsibility, etc.

Where things go from now can be reflective of how serious this movement is taken. Will things end after Murray finally makes a statement? Will people let Final Fantasy off easy? Is Murray an easier target than Howard or Molyneaux?

Long story short, you guys are at a crossroads and while we seemingly get a new NMS thread every day, it's starting to become an echo chamber. This can be a problem when you have an enthusiast press who happily gets in the mud and starts slinging things like the fan base for hits.

If you're genuinely interested in making an industry change, organize, but for god's sake with all the energy being put into this NMS campaign, imagine how the industry would look if even 1/10th of you continued this and applied it to other releases.

How has refunds from steam being going recently? I have a friend who has been trying to refund, and was turned down today after submitting a ticket, with apparently a message that the rumors/accusations of this game are false or something.

Not only are people taking it too seriously, but too personally as well.
Some people are acting like Murray was their best friend and now they feel betrayed.
It's easy to get invested in these things, and Murray was a charming guy during interviews and such, so I suppose it's natural to feel some attachment.
